With all the focus on Hossa, let's approach Florida with a real deal and steal their captain.

He's young,6'3",215 pounds,has skill and grit,and he's signed for 2 more years at a bargain 5 mil!

Fins has shown they have heart and leadership qualities,so if we have to give up picks/prospects/roster players, lets get someone that will be here for at least a couple of years.

I think Hossa wants to play the free market, and his playoff performances have been suspect.

Let the others drive the price up for Hossa who will be a rental, and lets focus on Jokinen for a long term plan,as well as providing secondary scoring for this year.

What will it take to land him?

Jokinen is going to cost an incredible amount of assets thanks to the affordable contract he's signed to for the next few years. Plus, he doesn't have a NTC so he can't pick and choose where he's dealt to. Hossa can choose where he wants to extend (which is, IMO, the only reason the Wings may be in the running for him) so it limits his value.

It depends on what Floridas asking price is. If its something similar to what were offering for Hossa, I can imagine it being done, but I still think it would cost more than that. There have to be a lot of teams itching to add Jokinen, especially at his price.

But it would definitely be a dream to get all our needs addressed with a "Jokinen and Salei to Detroit for..."

I would prefer to pay more for a player that will be here for another 2 years than a rental.

I believe you have to give up assets to gain assets. A rental (Hossa) is only valuable if he can help bring home a cup. When was the last time the Wings signed a rental, and won?

Trading for longer term "assets" (such as Shanahan,Murphy) have proven to be successful.

It would be much more than a RENTED Hossa. It would be a little more than a longterm Hossa.

Why? Jokinen's contract is almost guaranteed to be less than Hossa's extension and the two are very similar players. Plus, Florida can get any of the 29 other teams involved in a trade for Jokinen. He's a franchise center so even the fringe teams will be interested. Hossa, on the other hand, wants to sign with a winner so he can control his destiny. Theoretically Atlanta could trade Hossa to a team he won't sign with, but I doubt a team getting him as a rental will pay more than teams he's willing to sign with.

Trust me, if the Wings get Hossa he won't be a rental. This point has been reiterated many times by many people.

Flip, Ericsson, Top 10 Prospect, 1st, in 08, 1st in 09

for

Jokinen and Salei

I'd do it.

Looks pretty realistic to me, maybe one more prospect or pick on top of that i'd say. But can we beg them to take Sammy while we're at it? ;)

Samuelson? Lets throw in Lebda and Hudler while we're out it and pry Horton and Weiss out of Florida too! :D

Would Anaheim give up that first rounder next year for Olli? Could they afford him?

I hadn't even thought about Anaheim getting him. I can imagine since they were supposedly in on the Sundin race that they'll be in on the Jokinen race, though. God, they'd be scary if they got him. Getzlaf and Perry then Jokinen and Selanne?

I think the thing that prevents them from getting him is the fact that Florida will probably want some NHL ready guys and Anaheim doesn't have many to give up. Kunitz is probably the only one... possibly Perry. I highly doubt they'd deal Perry though.

Well now you're being greedy! They might make us keep Hudler.

They could i guess, but things would be tight again though salary wise next season. One of Schneider/Niedermayer obviously would have to be gone for sure. It probably could be done with the cap going up....Weight's salary would be gone, not sure who else would be free agents aside from Perry. If they threw that Edmonton first with Ryan i couldnt see any way that Detroit or anybody really could top that.

Burke said the Edmonton first won't be in play, but you never know what's truth and what's not with GM's talking trade.

How much do you think theyre gonna get for Jokinen?? The guy doesnt have infinite trade value. There is no team that is that desperate for Jokinen that they're going to pay out the ass for him. If Hossa only has Detroit and Montreal on the table for his longterm services and he doesnt care which team it is, Waddell is still going to hold up the deal in order to up the ante from one of the two teams...Theyll end up going for similar prices in the end, regardless of who goes from each end.

Hell, there have already been enough Marleau for Jokinen trade rumors (straight up) swirling around. To think that guys like Higgins - who are already having better seasons than Marleau - PLUS a pick, PLUS an elite prospect are being put on the table for Hossa, theres no way teams are going to be shelling out significantly more than that for Jokinen.

Anaheim would NOT be able to afford to Jokinen. If they wanted to add him, they would have to get a guy like Todd Marchants salary off the books (or maybe even a bigger one) within a week of acquiring Jokinen. So basicaly, they'd have less than 2 days to acquire Jokinen AND trade Marchant in order to LEGALLY attain Jokinen.

There is this thing in the CBA called "tagging room", which means you have to have a certain amount of cap space available on next years payroll before you add more salary to the present years payroll. If you go over the tagging space, you have 7 days to move salary. Jokinen would put them well over that, so theyd have to almost immediately move some substantial salary..and I cant see anyone biting on Marchants paycheck..

Trading for Hossa would be a plus IF you can sign him to a Contract Extention, He has stated he want s to become a FA at seasons end and test the waters, If you cant Sign Hossa long term as part of the deal I would not give up much for him, Realistically that would not happen, Just based on Hossa's value NOW But we shall see
