Guest Crymson Report post Posted February 26, 2008 (edited) Beat ya to it... If it's to Detroit i'll be sick I imagine that Holland, given that he actually needs to build good teams, is not infected by the nostalgia bug that has influenced many on these boards to suggest bad trades for former Wings. why are we death against lapointe? he plays his best hockey in the playoffs. As I was saying.... Well, I suppose this calls for some numerical evidence. Since the '98 playoffs (hence, in the last ten seasons), Martin Lapointe's playoff stats are as follows: With Detroit: 25 games, 3 goals, 4 assists. With Boston: 18 games, 2 goals, 2 assists. Total: 43 games, 5 goals, 6 assists. It must also be taken into consideration that he has not played in a playoff game since 2004, making any positive judgment of his playoff prowess even less valid. I don' t think that anyone is saying that bringing back marty as a top 6 forward is a good idea. But as additonal depth and grit I think its a fine move. Not earth shatering but a move that you make to prepare for a long and difficult playoff run.

Giving away assets in return for a 35 year-old player who is past his prime, no longer scores, hardly hits and is hideous defensively is neither a good way to prepare for the playoffs nor for the future. Agreed. While he won't do alot during the reg season - it's the mucking/grinding style of playoff hockey is where he shines. See my post above for details. Too, please do not ignore the fact that Marty's production has steadily declined since the lockout, that he last played a playoff game in 2004, and that he last logged a playoff point in 2003. I'm sure no one is willing to pay a kings ransom for Lapointe, he was probably gotten for a mid to low draft pick.

Giving up anything for him is bad; worse, he's a liability and a waste of ice time at this stage of his career. Edited February 26, 2008 by Crymson

This is a bit harsh, but I agree that giving away assets for Marty would be a waste. I remember someone arguing against Lapointe at deadline-time last year, was that you? Your posts/points seem so familiar. (Not that it's bad, I'm just curious)

Jamaica Jon 1 Report post Posted February 26, 2008 Isn't that the job for Sammy/Filppula/Hudler Just kiddin'...Seriously though Lapointe to me is just a rental for the upcoming playoffs; a guy to do alot of the dirty work in the corners/along the boards, & will drop the gloves when we face the Flames, & or Ducks...I wouldn't want him for the following 2008/2009 season (is he under contract for next year?). No. He will be an UFA this summer.

We have people already who will 'do the dirty work.' Holmstrom. Drake. Downey. Cleary, when he returns. Franzen. Maltby. Etc. Lapointe doesn't fight anymore. He wouldn't make a difference. Jamaica Jon 1 Report post Posted February 26, 2008 Like I said; just a rental for the playoffs, & only if nobody else is available. I wouldn't mind seeing him here if: - We didn't give up much - There wasn't 11 hours left to get a better deal done My point is, this would be way too early for us to "give up" and settle for someone like Lapointe. Lapointe doesn't fight anymore. He wouldn't make a difference. So many people on these boards say that the Wings need to get tough, need more guys who will do the dirty work. When there is a rumor of a guys who does the dirty work, everyone talks about how much they suck. I personally don't like the idea of Lapointe coming back, but people on theses boards are just too much. "I want a tough, gritty player! Well not that tough gritty player!" If you think that the executives of this team can just snap their fingers and the best players in the leagues will take a discount to come in under the cap you are crazy. You take what you can get and build from there. Sometimes that means taking a player who might not be an elite player, but is a player that can help the team.
