Luongo

Roberto Luongo would have helped us win no more Cups than we did. Had he been the starter, it's quite possible the Wings don't win any of them.

wow that is deep :) w2g!

can't be in a much better position to win the cup than 97,98 and 02!

All of those NOT involving Bobby.

Ask the Panthers and Canucks how he helps.

Without Bobby, Vancouver is not in the playoff hunt. Florida was filled with rookie players and not so good vets. Keenan was down there coaching.... When Luongo is on, hes the best.

He went 39-6-5 that season and was a Vezina finalist. If he was the backup, he's the only backup in history to have gotten the decision 50 times and also the only one to win 39 games.

Luongo wouldn't have helped those teams win a Cup. Luongo didn't enter the league until 1999-2000, where he had a very average season for a subpar Isles team. The next summer, he was traded to the Panthers.

By comparison, here are the Vezina ranks of the Wings' Cup goalies:

1997, Mike Vernon: no votes.

1998, Chris Osgood: 7th place.

2002, Dominik Hasek: 6th place.

Luongo's first season with Vezina votes was 2003-04.

So Vernon, who had been the backup but got the nod in the playoffs, is the only goalie who wasn't a Vezina contender in his Cup year with Detroit. Luongo was 17 at the start of that season.

Roberto Luongo would have helped us win no more Cups than we did. Had he been the starter, it's quite possible the Wings don't win any of them.

At least you didn't post all that stuff about Osgood being as good as Roy and Belfour. Luongo was on some crap teams Ev, where he didn't have much help, and seen more rubber than a hooker at a truck stop.

Dont get me wrong, i like Osgood and Hasek. But it would sure be nice to have that type of goalie, that plays 70 games a season. Is a complete wall.

Im not sold on Jim Howard just yet either, his stints this season have been good. But thats never a sure thing to use. Im still thinking Miller will be a wing.

Well if being the best doesn't win cups (has he yet) then i will take 2nd, or 3rd or 20th best to actually win the cups.

He can't score, he can only try to keep the other team from scoring. I would take him on the Wings in a second. Anyone who wouldn't doesn't watch him much.

You would if he cemented your goaltending position for the next decade.

No. I still wouldnt. I dont beleive the system the Wings use requires a 7 million per year goalie. There are always goalies available for less money that could do the job.

so if you had patrick roy in his prime as your goalie you wouldn't pay him that?

Really bad example.I loathe Roy more than anything so my answer will be biased.I would still say no because I think his contract handcuffs the Canucks for the duration of it.

Are you serious? Bobby is a BARGAIN at the annual cap hit of $6.75.

If you think Bobby's contract handcuffs the Nucks, then what must you think of Datsyuk's, Nick's, Ralffy's or the one Hank WILL get?

If the Wings have Bobby in net, they don't need to pay a guy like Kronwall $3 per, or Ralffy's $6. Instead, you would see cheaper role guys in those spots.

Anyone who wouldn't take Bobby and his contract is insane. He is the best at what he does.

Luongo was on crap teams. My point was not that he is not a great goalie...just that he was not better in 97, 98, or 2002 than what we had between the pipes.

Kronwall's level of play this season is worth well above $3m when compared with his peers. Just so you know.

The Wings could probably have taken Luongo on instead of Hasek based on this year's cap; they'd have been looking at an increase of about $2.7m. That would have been doable this year, although it might have meant no moves at the deadline.

Man, with Luongo, no one could beat us. I love Dom and Osgood and there good goalies. But Luongo is a franchise goalie who is a game changer. Without him Vancouver would be nothing, and without him Florida would have finished DEAD last in the East every year. I dont doubt he could probably get 50 wins in any given season here. With Lou in net and Lidstrom and Rafalski on the back end, that'd be ridiculous.

But since it'll never happen, I'm going to stop dreaming now :(.

When you look at what Florida got in return, then consider that Datsyuk was actually rumored there, you really have to wonder just how stupid a person could be...

Of course, this is Mike Keenan we're talking about... :yowza:

That's exactly why I singled Kronwall out. If you take out the tandem of Ozzie and Dom you are left with about $3 to clear to fit Bobby with what the Wings currently have spent. This would leave room for deadline moves.

Also, something that everyone is overlooking, think about this.

The rumor was Datsyuk + going to Florida. That means the Wings wouldn't be paying his $6.7, that in itself makes pleanty of room for Bobby.

Unfortuantly that is exactly our problem... ergo he wouldn't help us  We do a pretty good job keeping teams low scoring with our "subpar" goaltending... so unless he can score he wouldn't make a difference. :)

Once again it comes down to the system. The Wings need puck moving defensemen for it to work, not a top 3 goalie. Im not saying it works all the time but then again how many cups have any of Luongo's teams won?

According to this board, the Wings' problem is secondary scoring. Why would you want to see an elite offensive player shipped out for a goalie, when that takes from a weakness and adds to a strength based on this season and the past few playoff performances?
