skacore 2 Report post Posted March 3, 2008 Alright so on March 9th I'm going to my first Wings' game with some buddies, we're from Toronto but we're gonna drive up there for a weekend and watch the wings take on Nashville.... I was wondering what the best way to get an octopus into the Joe would be? should I just buy a small one then like saran wrap it to my leg and keep it under my seat until I want to throw it...? and if I get caught throwing it do I get kicked out? lol... I wanna throw one but I just wanna make sure I don't get kicked out or arrested or some s***, I don't mind getting kicked out if it's the last few minutes but I just wanna know as much about it as possible.. how much do they cost anyways thanks
Blood On The Ice 15 Report post Posted March 3, 2008 Alright so on March 9th I'm going to my first Wings' game with some buddies, we're from Toronto but we're gonna drive up there for a weekend and watch the wings take on Nashville.... I wanna throw one but I just wanna make sure I don't get kicked out or arrested or some s***, I don't mind getting kicked out if it's the last few minutes but I just wanna know as much about it as possible.. how much do they cost anyways thanks I have never thrown one, but I've seen a few. From what I remember, everyone I observed brought it in their pants. I have also never seen anyone get thrown out or arrested yet. It seems that throwing a Octy at the Joe is accepted behavior. On one occasion I even seen the usher high five the Octy hurler. Hell even the rink manager Al Saboka gets into it when he comes out to clean it up. Can't help you on the cost. But have fun with it. Just don't throw it when the game is in play. Do it on a time out. Otherwise the wings will get 2 mins for delay of game.
#19forPresident! 1 Report post Posted March 3, 2008 (edited) "There is a certain etiquette that must be followed for fans that wish to throw octopuses onto the ice. The most appropriate time to throw an octopus onto the ice is after the national anthem is sung or after the Red Wings have scored a goal. Under these circumstances, the eight-legged creature must be thrown onto the ice surface in an area that is clear of all players. It is never acceptable to aim for opposing players. Beforehand, octopuses are usually boiled by fans to reduce the amount of "slime" coating and facilitate the time it takes to clean up the ice and prevent further delay. Al Sobotka is the man responsible for removing the thrown creatures from the ice. He is known for swinging the tossed octopuses above his head when walking off the ice. Since Joe Louis Arena does not condone the throwing of any foreign objects onto the ice, fans often sneak the sea creatures in wrapped around their bellies in trash bags. The boiling process also lessens the odor and allows the fans to get past security. Tactics are also used to protect the identity of octopus-throwers from arena security. It is common practice for the hurler to ask the surrounding people to stand up with him to shroud the task in anonymity." Excerpt from an old article that was still linked on wikipedia, there used to be a video somewhere with the Detroit fish market that pre-prepares them specifically for throwing, I'm sure someone around here with a better memory than me will think of it, and maybe even find a link. Sidenote: People who are identified and caught ARE actively removed from games for throwing them. During the playoffs games I attended last year I watched people get escorted out during the Calgary and San Jose series for doing it either after the anthem or very early in the game. Guest LivingtheDream Report post Posted March 3, 2008 You are going to have to crotch it! Also, the real aficionados boil theirs. Far less slime. Another thought. Octopi are actually very smart animals or if you ever ordered it at Greek Town, it is VERY good to eat! Do you want to have one die just for being trash on the ice? GMRwings1983 8,803 Report post Posted March 3, 2008 How can anyone be so disgusting as to put a slimy octopus with all those legs down their pants or up their shirt? I'm not an overly squemish person, but that would just be unbearable. Well, I guess if you're drunk enough, there's no stopping someone from doing anything.
