12Newf 0 Report post Posted March 5, 2008 if they start using video replay for every call the game would become ridiculous. all of a sudden they would be taking a measuring tape out every time a goal was scored to see if there may have been an offside. a dump and chase play would be put under the microscope to look for icing. this is just a horrible stretch of bad calls and i think the nhl needs to maybe look at who theyre bringing in rather then turning to video replay because the sharks goal and this one are entirely inexcusable. eva unit zero 271 Report post Posted March 5, 2008 I have been saying for a long time that the NHL needs to implement the ability for refs to call off a penalty, much like in football. In football, if one ref throws a flag, and they converse and the flag was thrown incorrectly, the penalty is not called. The NHL has needed to implement that kind of procedure for a long time. That way, we avoid situations where one guy sees something and calls it, but the guy with the better view doesn't call it because he saw the fact that it wasn't a penalty. haroldsnepsts 4,826 Report post Posted March 5, 2008 Ive said it many times.Ive been watching NHL hockey for over 25 years and this is the worst season of officiating that I can remember. Im not sure if any fans, coaches or players have any idea what a penalty is anymore, not to mention the blatent blown calls. The NHL needs to figure this out or they are going to lose more fans than they gain. I've definitely felt like the reffing has been bad the last couple seasons, worse than I'd remembered in all my years of watching hockey. It's starting to seem that guys like McGeough were not the exception, they're becoming the new standard.

I actually casually know Gord Dwyer(He went to the same High School I did) and he might be the worst ref in the entire league. He was terrible doing QMJHL games and he hasnt improved. Maybe give NHL coaches one challenge per game like in the NFL. It could come in handy for all those penalties getting called in the last minute. I mean....what could it really hurt. Creasemonkey 30 Report post Posted March 5, 2008 If you are referring to the Hull goal in 1999, that goal was good. And no, even if it hadn't counted, the Stars would still have won the Cup. It was overtime in game 6 and the Stars had outplayed the Sabres pretty handily all series. The Sabres' chances of coming back and winning were slim. Not according to the rules at the time, it wasn't. Period. It is probably the most conclusively blown call in a finals game in the history of any sport. You might be right about them not having a chance anyway, but if that had happened against Detroit, you'd have a "No Goal" bumper sticker too.

You are right I just looked it up, for some reason I always thought it was the world cup finals. My B!! Did you see (if you don't follow soccer ignore me) that Messi did the same thing in 07, but he was much sneakier about it!

You might be right about them not having a chance anyway, but if that had happened against Detroit, you'd have a "No Goal" bumper sticker too. The rules at the time allowed a player to enter the crease after the puck and remain there even if the puck left so long as he maintained possession while the puck was outside the crease, which Hull did. It was a midseason amendment to the crease rule intended to cut down on the number of breakaway goals that had been disallowed. For another instance, see game five of round two when Peter Forsberg scored on Chris Osgood on a breakaway after skating through the crease. He shot the puck from inside the crease, but the puck had left the crease when it happened while his skates were still inside the crease when the puck crossed the line. Did you see (if you don't follow soccer ignore me) that Messi did the same thing in 07, but he was much sneakier about it! I am an avid soccer fan so yes I did see that. Messi is often compared to Maradona so I guess it makes sense that he would do the same thing. The big difference is that in 07 Argentina didnt win.

That would be cool, the cooler part would be that he got away with it.
