stevkrause 1,247 Report post Posted March 10, 2008 I just have to preface these by saying that The Hart trophy goes to the most valuable player and the impact they have on their team and as an overall player, as well as the fact that I've always thought it was ridiculous to name an MVP based off of individual stats on a losing team - with how the Wings played without Nick and how they play WITH Nick, I think was a glaring statement that he BADLY deserves the Hart this year. Hart 1. Nick Lidstrom 2. Alexander Ovechkin 3. Evgeni Malkin Lady Byng 1. Joe Sakic 2. Mike York 3. Pavel Datsyuk Vezina 1. Martin Brodeur 2. Evgeni Nabokov 3. Pascal Leclaire Calder 1. Opie 308 Report post Posted March 10, 2008 Pardon my ignorance, but what did Blake come back from? Cancer? Well he never left, he is ill with it, but not sure that would get him the Masterson, besides didn't it happen this year? Stats? I think Ozzie had a better rebound year than him? YoungGuns1340 1 Report post Posted March 10, 2008 I dont think Malkin gets the Hart with Crosby on the same team, despite Crosbys injury. And I think Tobias Enstrom will get more love for the Calder than some of you guys are showing..

arnoldbuck 0 Report post Posted March 10, 2008 I have to beating this as few times over the last few weeks, so I guess one more time wont be so bad. I love AO, i really thing he is the ideal hockey player. However, despite his totals, in goals, points, if he can't get the Caps to the playoffs, he isn't deserving of the Hart. Yes he is incredibly important to that team/franchise, however, and MVP should be able to elevate his team to that next level. That being said, obviously I'd like to see Nick finally get the nod. However, another Norris is where Nick will have to settle. Because after Sid went down I really thought the Pens would struggle. But Malkin has stepped up his game huge and has been a beast. If season ended right now. I'd have to say he would be crowned champ.
Never_Retire_Steve 35 Report post Posted March 10, 2008 Isn't Masterton perserverance? Doesn't mean they have to come back....... I could be wrong on this but this is how I always interpreted the trophy.
toby91_ca 620 Report post Posted March 10, 2008 I can't give Ovechkin the Hart if his team misses the playoffs, unless he wins the scoring race by a signifcant amount, which it doesn't appear will happen. I wouldn't be against him winning the Pearson though. Interesting stat though, this will be (or certainly appears as though it will happen) the 1st time a Russian player has ever lead the league in scoring. Russians will finish #1 and #2. You can blame a bit of that on Crosby missing 20+ games, but what about all the other non-Russians? I think part of it is Ovechkin and Malkin elevating their games and part of it is that some others really fizzled out a bit. These 2 are the only ones on pace for 100 pts I think, with Ovechkin on pace for 111. That seems like a low total to win the scoring title, or shoudl I say "should be a low number to win the scoring title." Argument for Blake not to win Masterton because "it" happened this year, well, Kessel's cancer happened during the season last year and he barely missed anytime because of it and he ended winning (I think)
Never_Retire_Steve 35 Report post Posted March 10, 2008 Actually I am pretty sure that Fedorov won the scoring title around the 94-95 season..... however, this will be the first time that Russians will finish 1-2 that is for sure.

No, the closest he came was his Hart Trophy year of 93/94, in which his 120 points was 10 shy of Gretzky.
Dano33 41 Report post Posted March 10, 2008 Ovechkin deserves the Hart. If he wasn't on that team i really think those guys he plays with (Backstrom, sometimes Semin) would be nothing. That team would be nothing without him. He is bringing the Caps to another Level, singlehandedly getting that team in playoff contention deserves a Hart Trophy. Carey Price Stanley Cup = My one and only Detroit Red Wings. I chose Malkin over Crosby for the Hart because THIS SEASON he is more valuable for the Pens than Crosby because he stepped up in Crosby's absence and kept them alive, along with pushing them to the top of the divison for a bit. Overall, yes, Crosby is more valuable but this season Malkin is the one. And it's good to recognize the guy for what he's done. Crosby is going to get plenty more in his career. As long as Malkin is with the Pens I'm almost positive this is his best chance at winning this trophy.

12Newf 0 Report post Posted March 11, 2008 im surprised im the only one who picked the preds' coach barry trotz for the jack adams. i hate the preds as much as the next guy but in the offseason they lost forsberg, kariya, timmonen, vokoun...the list goes on! and theyre still in the thick of the playoff race. that is very impressive. on another note, everyone wrote off the coyotes and gretzky's boys are just a few points out of the playoffs. Gretzkys success conicided with an effortless acquiring of Bryzgalov. And Trotz hasnt done much special this year. They may have lost some important guys, but they had a stacked roster last year from top to bottom. There are plenty of coaches who have done more impressive things this year, and many with lesser rosters than what Trotz has.
