The Ovech-Kam

Yahoo is showing a live game tonight. Capitals vs. Flames.

Anyway, they have a camera following him around all game even when he is on the bench. They have the screen of just him takin up most of the space, and the rest off the game shoved off into the corner. I think its great that the NHL is trying to show off their stars, but this is a bit excessive. i wanna see the game, not ovechkin shooting off snot-rockets on the bench.

i also agree with you. above all other sports, hockey is a team sport. if the nhl wants to expand the fan base, it must do so by also selling the sport as a package, not just 'star-vision' imo.

as a side note, can you imagine a 'datsyuk cam'? the poor cameraman would get dizzy and exhausted. or even a 'Lang cam'....

At least Ovechkin doesn't let this kind of over promotion get to his head. He seems real laid back about all the attention he gets and values his teammates as much as anybody.

Is that some kind of joke? I'm sorry, but when I see Ovechkin celebrating regular, meaningless goals like he just scored the winner in OT of Game 7 of the SCF, anything but laid back comes to mind.

I think he's a phenominal player, and it's great that he shows his emotions, but that doesn't put aside the fact that he is a hot dog. I have nothing against that, because it's nice that at least some players in the league aren't robots that are mechanically controlled by the team owners. It's just that the term "laid back" doesn't fit Alex Ovechkin, at least not in my opinion.

We need a Lidstrom-Cam.

Best player in the World.

Come to think of it, we don't need any cams or glowing pucks....

Just a suggestion...you know in case Yahoo or the NHL decides to troll the boards for their next great idea. How about a playercam/game where the viewer can switch back and fourth...kinda like Picture in Picture! Sounds like a cool idea to me...I would so have goalie cam on!

The Ovechkin cam was a disappointment. While Center Ice offered the game straight up or with OvechCam on different channels, I was expecting something different. It would have been a lot better had they mounted a camera on his helmet, not just isolated him.

i think what your saying is the joke. your faulting a guy for being excited at all time's playing the game he loves. he wants to win more than anyone. his celebrating a teammates goal like he does is refreshing and lifts the team. if half the players in the nhl were as excited as he was, we'd be better off. AND every goal for the capitals is an important goal so he should jump around like it was a stanley cup goal, they are desperately trying to get in the playoffs and he's leading the way. he should be mvp no matter what the capitals end up doing by end of the season. he is a laid back guy, you need to watch more of his interviews, he jokes around, he's funny, he's kinda funny looking and simply loves hockey and it shows in his everyday attitude. he's a character and the star of the league with crosby, we should be exploiting him if we wanna make the game more popular because he's interesting. watching a crosby interview makes me wanna sleep even though he's a fav of mine. it feels like crosby is a robot and saying what he is programed to say to make no mistakes. i'd rather see ovechkin goofing around. or more roenick, who is the best ambassador for the game yet he's out of the spotlight.

i thought the ovechcam was cool to some degree. i have center ice, so on one channel it was the game and another channel was the ovechcam. i switched back a forth, it was cool to see him sitting on the bench spitting like a madman and see his reaction to every play. i just didn't like how his side of the screen was huge and the game was not, how can you watch the game like that. it should have been equal size or the game bigger with the ovechcam as a pip display. to whoever said they stopped watching the game cause of it..ya know you could have just watched the other channel that had just the game. but yeah if they do the ovechcam or even on crosby maybe, they need to change the picture size, and add a mic. then it would be an amazing feature.

There is nothing wrong with being excited about a goal and I love seeing players excited (see: http://blog.mlive.com/snapshots/2007/12/homerdatsyuk.jpg), but the way he celebrates them is just so obnoxious, with slamming off the boards and and getting down on one knee and what not is just annoying. Not to say I don't like ovechkin (I love him, actually), it goes for everyone who does s*** like that. I hate it in football too.

The only time it pisses me off is if he scores against the Wings. :hehe: All other times its ok in my book. And I cant really blame the guy. If he celebrated everytime he scored and was just some average joe, it would be one thing. But 1) He scores more than any guy in the NHL, so obviously were going to see him celebrate more, 2) He scores like 1 in every 3 of his teams goals, so theyre important goals whenever they come and 3) hes trying to get his team somewhere. Hes probably the most competitive guy in the league, and that shows up on the ice. He wants to win all the time, every time. And hes been trying to get his team into the playoffs since he played his first NHL game. IMO, thats how he see it. Every goal he scores gets him closer to the Stanley Cup. Its simply not the same for other players who can rely on teammates to help them make the playoffs. Ovechkin has to elevate his game and the game of others around him in order to get the Caps into the playoffs.

Personally, Id love to see more raw emotion out of the Wings.

The problem was that Ovechkin was on the bench a LOT. It would not have been so bad if the views switched when Ovechkin was on the bench.

Did you happen to read the part where I said I have no problem with that, or just not even bother?

The reason I said the comment was a joke was because the term "laid back" was used. That was it.
