Pronger at it again

Correct me if I'm wrong (I know I'm not), but didn't the last stomping incident warrant a massive suspension? Obviously Pronger won't be seeing the same length of suspension because he's, well, Chris Pronger, and apparently that means something. But cummon! If it can be shown through the video, and it is obvious, then he should be out for a while. Ridiculous!

I won't be happy unless it's a 30-game suspension. Chris Simon got a 30-game suspension for the same thing. And Pronger's more of a repeat offender than Simon.

But you know it'll never happen. A couple games, tops. Thus proving, once again, that the disciplinarians in this league are a joke.

I agree, and the league can't argue for less games than Simon due to both of their pasts having "instances".

30 Games, nothing less.

rest of the season, no question...

And the playoffs.

What makes this even more deplorable is that he's the CAPTAIN of that dirty team (EDIT: Sorry, Duck Guy...you're much classier than the guys on the ice and I'm sure everyone here will agree). Way to set an example for the youngins.

I'll be VERY surprised if he gets the 30 days.

He should, it's only fair, but sadly this league is horrible with handing out disciplinary actions.

I wouldn't go as far to say THAT

30 games. No question, a precedent has been set.

Ya, I'm really looking forward to hear how Bettman et al plan on wiggling their way out of this one. Same incident, but Pronger will probably get like 25 fewer games. It's bush league, but we all know it's gonna happen, precedent or no precedent.

And, furthermore, even if they do grow some balls and come out and say, "Pronger gets 30 games", its not gonna be a "good for them for doing the right thing", it gonna be more of a "It's about f*cking time they got something right". At least in my mind.

Pronger's suspension history (from ESPN.com)

• 1995: The league suspended Pronger, then with the St. Louis Blues, for four games after he hit Capitals forward Pat Peake in the throat with a stick during a Oct. 29 game at the Kiel Center. Brian Burke, the NHL's director of hockey operations at the time, held a hearing with Pronger, Blues GM and coach Mike Keenan, Pronger's agent and a NHL Players' Association rep. Peake suffered a fractured thyroid cartilage and was expected to miss four weeks at the time of the hit.

• 1998: Pronger, still with the Blues, was suspended for four games for slashing Phoenix's Jeremy Roenick on Dec. 17, 1998. Pronger drew a match penalty when he took a swing at Roenick's helmet. Colin Campbell, the NHL senior vice president and director of hockey operations, ruled that Pronger was attempting to injure Roenick in an "extremely reckless and dangerous manner."

• 2001: Pronger was suspended without pay for one game after leaving the bench and instigating a fight with the Kings' Kelly Buchberger during an Oct. 11, 2000 game. Blues winger Pavol Demitra suffered a broken nose when Buchberger hit him with an elbow during the second period. That hit provoked Pronger to leave the bench.

• 2002: Pronger received a two-game suspension without pay for cross-checking Stars forward Brenden Morrow in an April 3 game. The suspension cost Pronger $231,707.32 in salary. The cross-check left Morrow bleeding near one of his eyes. St. Louis beat Dallas 2-1 in overtime.

• 2004: Pronger, still with St. Louis, was suspended one game without pay for kicking Calgary's Ville Nieminen during a March 14 game. Pronger kicked Nieminen with 9:23 gone in the first period, but there was no penalty on the play. The suspension came as St. Louis was making a late push for the playoffs. The Blues were later ousted in the first round.

• 2007: Pronger, in his first postseason with the Ducks, was suspended one game for his hit on Detroit's Tomas Holmstrom in Game 3 of the Western Conference finals on May 15. Pronger and Rob Niedermayer drove Holmstrom into the glass from behind midway through the second period. The hit knocked off Holmstrom's helmet and left him on the ice with a cut to his forehead. Holmstrom did return to the game. Niedermayer received a five-minute boarding penalty and a game misconduct. Pronger was not penalized. Replays apparently showed Pronger hitting Holmstrom in the head with his elbows, leading the NHL to review the incident.

• 2007: Pronger was suspended one game for his blow to the head of Ottawa's Dean McAmmond in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup finals. McAmmond was struck as he skated with the puck toward the Ducks net. He did a spin, fell backward, struck his head on the ice, and slid into the corner in the Anaheim zone at 2:01 of the third period. McAmmond was briefly knocked out and left the ice looking woozy after several minutes of on-ice attention.

You don't call that a "repeat offender"?

Two things:

I'd have to see the video, but if he did stomp on Kesler's calf, that's worse than Simon stomping on a boot.

Secondly, there's no way he comes close to a 30 game suspension, if he gets one at all. Simon's was in part because he was just coming back from the stick swinging incident. Add to that Pronger is a star player in this league.

Without having seen it (hopefully someone will have a youtube clip soon) I'd bet 5 games max, if he gets any at all.

I would exactly compare a forearm or dirty hit to a cross-check in the face like Simon did. Pronger got a game for each -Simon got rest of the season.

The league unfortunately has shown over and over again that it only finds its spine regarding suspensions when it involves a marginal player.

In spite of being a repeat offender, Pronger is a golden boy in this league.

Happened behind the play - refs did not see it and there is no video. No penalty.

I bet there is no suspension.

I am afraid that egroen is right. I rewatched the first minute of the second period (as mentioned in the article) and the incident is not in view.

Look at one of my previous posts showing all of Pronger's suspensions. Stick to the throat, stick to the head, stick to the face - Pronger's done it all.

But that's what makes it BS. I don't care who it is, if you're going to step on someone's calf with a sharp skate blade you should be penalized the same as anyone else. The same goes for any player (star or not) on the Red Wings.

He may not get 30 games, as the severity of Simon's suspension was party the result of him just coming back from suspension, but he shouldn't get less than 15.
