Khabibulin Made An Amazing Save Tonight

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

While you are all out celebrating your win over Columbus, the Blackhawks had Tony-O night tonight.

Great team effort, destroyed the Caps 5-0. You know, like the kind of effort the Blackhawks showed against the Wings for the first four games of the season series. Ok, the first three.

And Khabibulin made the best save I have ever seen, ever.

Better than Caron's save against Philly. Better than Giguere's behind the back stick saves in the 03 playoffs. Better than Toskala's save against the Islanders.

I don't have a link right now, but you'll see it in a highlight reel soon enough.

here's my vote for best save i've ever seen

As a goalie myself the amount of concentration required to do what cam ward does here against the oilers is amazing. His body is already moving one way and he's thinking about the save he's about to make, and in an 8th of a second he changes his save, his body postioning and puts his glove in the air to pluck out a goal.

The Bulin one is breathtaking, but sheer luck. Now i'm not taking anything away from it, but i've seen that save several times with several different goalie,..including our own Chris Osgood as eva points out below me. That one however, was by far the prettiest save i've ever seen.

Congrats to Bulin, he's had a tough year.

Actually, to go with my example, here's cam ward doing basically the same save with his blocker instead of his glove.

Granted, it's a nice save, but in terms of reaction time and difficulty Caron's save against Philly two years was more impressive, imo.

Definitely agreed.

The most impressive thing about Bulin's save is that he had to extend his arm to reach up higher to make the save, where as in Ozzy's save (also impressive), the puck was approaching the net at eye level when he was making the save.

Can't have a saves discuss w/o the Glass Domino. Puckloo maybe will remember these, discounting the save on Bure in '97 (flopping) and the Oates save in Game 5 of the '98 playoffs since people will just argue that "he made those harder than they needed to be", there was a save on Yashin in game 1 of the '99 playoffs against Ottawa which was a 5-4 or 5-3 powerplay, the guy in the slot dished off to Yashin off to the left on his forehand, he had the entire net, Hasek puts his stick back and makes the save out of the air...with the way the timing and everything was, some announcers didn't even recognize he had made a save b/c it was so incredible, I would compare it to the Caron save def. Most improbable was one from 2001 regular season when a couple Maple Leafs fell on him and one of the Leafs wrapped it around and to free himself, he took off his blocker and with his d-man and a Leaf lying on his legs and blocker, with his trapper and barehand reached to the other side and snatched the puck out of the air...it was pretty ridiculous. Yep.

BlackHF-

Did you get banned from the hawks board? You seem to be posting a lot of Chicago stuff here, and believe it or not this is a RED WINGS board.

BlackHF-

Did you get banned from the hawks board? No, not really. You seem to be posting a lot of Chicago stuff here, I wasn't aware one thread constituted "alot" and believe it or not this is a RED WINGS board. Duly noted. The site name LetsGoWings didn't help.

Besides, this was just posted at the Blackhawk officials:

I hope the NHL someday replaces the names of their trophies with those of modern day sports. Every sport has a MVP award and Rookie of the Year award. The NHL should call theirs the same thing. So instead of the 'Hart Trophy' just say 'MVP Trophy'. Instead of the 'Calder Trophy' just say 'Rookie of the Year'. For best defenseman, just say 'Best Defenseman' - keep it simple.

Also, the name for the 'Lady Byng' trophy needs to change or eliminate the award all together. This is the trophy awarded for the player who displays 'gentlemanly conduct' on the ice - which means he never drops the gloves. Can you imagine winning the "Lady Byng' trophy and the incessant teasing you would get from the other guys in the locker room? Any award given to a bunch of macho professional sports guys with the word 'Lady' in it is just wrong. It's one of those you say thank you for but toss in the wastebasket when you get home. It reminds me of that commercial a couple years ago where they showed a bunch of big men lifting weights at the gym and then over the loud speaker an announcement is made that someone with a brown 'minivan' in the parking lot left their lights on - it's that kind of a feeling winning the Lady Byng - you just pray they don't announce your name for that one.

There's no dearth of stupidity anywhere you go.

Frankie Pietrangelo's save on Stastny was the best I've seen. Anyone remember that? When he was playing for the Pens. Can't remember the year - maybe '90? In the playoffs.

My favorite save of all-time was Ed Belfour on Sergei Fedorov in the 95 playoffs.

The Wings were pressuring down low, and Belfour had dropped to the ice. He fell on his back by the right post as Bob Errey scooped up his own rebound and dished it over to Fedorov who was standing on the edge of the crease on the other side. Fedorov roofed the puck, and everyone in the building cheered. Only the puck had somehow ended up in Belfour's glove-he had just snatched it out of the air without being able to actually SEE it and while lying on the ice. Just sick stuff.

Speaking of glove saves, Trevor Koenig for the Maine Black Bears NCAA made an unbelieveable save on his back in double or triple OT of the semifinal, he shimmied over on his back and just threw up his glove without really looking and the puck ended up there, it was pretty f-ing cool looking.
