Milbury, McGuire get in their 2 cents

Don't know if you guys saw this, but NBC analysts Mike Milbury and Pierre McGuire opined on the state of the Wings in advance of Sunday's national-TV game.

Basically, Milbury still has the faith, while McGuire doesn't.

it's the same thing McGuire's been saying since he watched a couple bad games this year that the Wings lost on TSN... he's been downtalking them ever since... maybe if he watched more then just 3 games this season I would care about what he's sayin - and since i havent missed a game for 2 years, I could really care less what he thinks about us.

what??????

McGuire doesn't like our chances??? Thinks SJ and Ana are the only teams with a shot???? Well that's it then, someone call Lids and tell him to have the guys pack it up and head to the golf course. :)

McGuire just likes SJ and ANA because its warmer there and he can walk around in a speedo, I'm glad he likes them better I don't want to see him and his speedo anywhere near the D

Common NHL cliches

- Detroit are too old

- Detroit are too soft

- Detroit pad their wins against the weak central

- Detroit has suspect goaltending

- Ugly Bald nerd-guys with complexes, that know less than they let on, like to shoot their faces off about all the above rather than actually watching Detroit play.

McGuire is an idiot. If you take Cheli and Dom out of the age equation, our average age goes down a LOT, so much to the point that I don't think we're even close to being the "oldest team in the league" (can anyone crunch the numbers on that to see if I'm correct?). And besides, Cheli doesn't play his age.

Maguire makes me laugh because you know when we go on to win the cup he will be saying it's because of our experience and leadership but when we hit a dry spell it's because we are old....Make up your mind Pierre!!

lol The goaltending that is on the verge of bringing home the Jennings, the goaltending that has the had both goalies in the top 5 in GAA for most of the year. Outside of the really big age numbers most of the team is damn young. Cheli and Dom really raise the avg age but outside of that it really has a normal age range of most of the other teams in the NHL

you forgot

-Detroit hasn't won a Stanley Cup in 5 years

So for 5 years (minus lockout) its a matter of opinion why the Wings did not win. You cannot disprove that age, softness, playing weaker teams, or goaltending wasn't a contributing factor.

We did lose and we did hear those comments. For whatever reason, when we do lose, folks like to make up their own reasons why we lost because somebody else's reasons are silly because at the time, they were a knock on the Wings. And we don't take kindly to anybody knocking our boys now do we.

Just my 2 cents.

This is the same Pierre MacGuire who said at the beginning of the year that he had inside information that Peter Forsberg was coming to Detroit. Nothing but an il-prepared blowhard who spews out what he thinks people want to hear.

Excellent post. Most times, people want to say that their team didn't lose, we just didn't win. There's always an excuse for losing.

But more times than not, a team loses because it wasn't good enough or it was deficient in one category or another. Last year, the Ducks got better goaltending and were more physical than we were.

Regarding McGuire, I still have to laugh because for weeks he's been saying how dangerous the Canucks were going to be. Yup, they were so dangerous they lost 7 of their last 8 and failed to make the playoffs. I'm sure those 7 teams were shaking in their boots.

And now there's a rumor floating around that the Canucks could have had Kyle Turris (a B.C. native) for Morrison, Cory Schneider and a 1st. Ouch.

"I think they are an older team, I think they’re in trouble because they’re not a balanced offense"

we have five players with 20+ goals. the ducks have three. Even mighty San Jose has only three players with 20+. so how are we not balanced? McGuire is an idiot.

:edit: grammar

Meh, we've heard the Wings are too old for a decade now. It means nothing anymore.

QUOTED FOR TRUTH.

The Wings are too old every year. They were old when they won in 2002. You know what, they were also old/slow in the years they didn't win.

Seeing people in here get so worked up and pissed off that these people aren't on the Wings' jock straps still amuses me.

They are predictions people, they are made all the time and have no bearing on the outcomes on the ice. Some predictions will be accurate, some will be out in left field when all is said and done.

Not everybody is going to be all gung-ho with the idea of the Red Wings going deep in the playoffs like most of us are though.

Well people always look for reasons why Detroit lose. Fair enough.

In 03, 04, 06 it was a combination of a lack of grit, lack of scoring, and not getting that "save" when it was needed. Last year it was injuries. In my opinion. This year, if they can't win, I would guess it would be because of lack of depth up front, goaltending, and not enough offence. IMO.

My point is, I have no problem with members of the media not liking the Wings team, but just, you know, come up with some original opinions as to why you don't like the team's chances. McGuire delivers the same song and dance with the tone of a genius scientist that has just discovered a cure for cancer.

Also, there are various reasons why any contending team may/may not win the cup this year, but I don't see anyone lining up to say "San Jose won't win because they can't get over the hump of winning the big game (aka 'they choke')". Or how about "The Ducks have a good team, but it's really difficult to repeat as champions"? Or maybe "Pittsburgh are dangerous, but they have questions in goal and on D"?

It seams we don't here these criticisms of other teams as frequently. Which always makes me ask "why the hate-on for Detroit?"

My 2 cents......

As I said in a previous thread, Pierre is a feminine hygiene product. He needs to be replaced quickly. Isn't there anybody better for NBC to hire? I think Pierre's price was right; NBC is probably doing their hockey programming on a shoestring (compared to the CBC) and needs warm talking heads.

Hasn't anybody pointed out the names Franzen, Cleary, and Filppula to Pierre yet? Unproven goaltending? Sure, both of them are in the top 10 for GAA and we're in line to get the Jennings, awarded to the team with the FEWEST GOALS AGAINST. For the love of God, somebody get this guy a computer and a life.
