pavyaz19 1 Report post Posted April 9, 2008 Look, I know the April fools joke was on her about ads on jerseys... and I'm telling you, this stuff is not too far off. i.e. For the playoffs, they are painting "Stanley Cup Playoffs" inside the bluelines just like they had "Thank You Fans" after the lock-out. They also are painting an NHL shield logo behind the nets. For one, it annoys me because I hate anything painted where it doesn't need to be. Each time they do something like this, it makes the NHL look bad in my opinion. It's very minor league - makes us look bush league. My point is this, the more they paint on the ice, the more Bettman is going to push to turn them from semi-annoying NHL logos into completely obnoxious ads. I'm a purist, that's my opinion. A new marketing staff needs to be in place and Bettman needs to go. Do these paint jobs upset you as much as they do me?
timothy1997 0 Report post Posted April 9, 2008 (edited) they always add the stanley cup playoff logo in the playoffs as far as I can remember. Not sure on the blue line or behind the net. I dont mind it. its not the ice that i watch, its the players and the puck. Edited April 9, 2008 by timothy1997

It's good for the Wings, bad for Nashville. can't say i agree with that... you must be a yankees supporter too and yes, there have been ads at center ice for years... usually 4 of them near the offsides faceoff dots. those are fine. im against the new ones in the offensive zone which distract the eye from the puck and the action. My feeling is just that it will eventually happen anyway so why get so worked up over something that you can't control. I just don't understand why people do not realize the NHL is a business first, sport second. As sad as that is, that's life.

I'm watching the Sharks game, and I dont' know, their ice just looks very amateurish. Too much going on. When will people learn that you can get all flashy and obnoxious, but it won't last. Just stick to the simple stuff. Keep advertising to the boards only.

As sad as that is, that's life. similar to the luxuries of being an American citizen with our right to vote, we are also fans of the NHL which is why the NHL exists. I realize I cannot change your apathy, but contrary to what you may think, you do have a voice and more importantly money to spend (or not spend) on NHL products. Control. pavyaz19 1 Report post Posted April 10, 2008 IMHO I'd rather see these ads on the ice/along the wall instead of on the jerseys I agree with that, if I had to choose, I'd pick the ice instead of jerseys... BUT, both royally suck.
miller76 463 Report post Posted April 10, 2008 I could honestly care less about the on ice logos. I think it's just what goes on in professional sports. I bet if the league didn't do anything, we would complain that the league doesn't market itself better. Look at NFL or MLB, there is always a PLAYOFFS on the field in football, and the ALCS or NLCS or World Series on the ball field. These leagues try and take advantage of the massive amount of TV viewers as well.

Find something significant to piss and moan about. I'm a hockey purist - what does that even mean? That the game should be the same as it was 80 years ago? Does that mean Europeans should never have been allowed to come over? Does that mean we should have a 6 team league? Does that mean NHL games shouldn't be televised? I just don't get these people that would rather have no hockey at all than hockey with ads.

Disagree with this point in particular--the NFL, the anti-minor league, does something very similar, painting logos on the field for different occasions. There's an NFL Kickoff logo for the first weekend of the season, and of course the playoffs and Super Bowl. I'm a purist as well, but we've already popped the cherry on ice and board advertising, there's no going back to a plain white sheet of ice. Or gray, for those of you who are REAL purists. To me the quantity almost doesn't matter, it's a zero-sum game. Which is why I'm vehemently against any jersey ads, even seemingly benign ones like in the AHL. The ice used to be blue, and the crease and net area were painted white. After a couple years of that they swapped the color scheme to make the puck more visible. As far as ads on the ice...we already have them and it doesn't cause a problem for the players or for viewing...so I don't care if they add a few more. timothy1997 0 Report post Posted April 10, 2008 I just finished watching the 2001-2002 Red Wing Championship DVD and they had a red, white, blue ribbon behind the net for 9/11. That didn't seem to bother anyone.

There's no point in putting ads ont he ice. It won't lure any new fans, so it has nothign to do with marketing. Only people already watching will even see the ads. I'm fine with ads along the boards. It's tacky, but it's acceptable. On the jerseys and ice? No. Games are an escape for many people. They should be kept separate from profiteering.
timothy1997 0 Report post Posted April 10, 2008 Just looking at some old footage of Red Wing history today. I didn't realize but the Red Wings had "Joe Louis Arena" across the blue line before. Football is a bad example because the TV deals take care of most of the leagues expenses. Marketing is the wrong word. Advertising is more appropriate. It's becoming more prevelent on TV as well. Should you be a TV watcher. Pay attention to your shows and how they slip that can of Coke or Pepsi in so as the star drinks you see the logo. Or the computer the star is using is shot so you can see that it's a dell or a mac. The NHL has just made it obvious and teams are profitting from it. I just wish the ads were a little bit smaller.
