FrozenPuck 0 Report post Posted April 11, 2008 is there a guy that loves to play playoff hockey more than Gary Roberts, especially against the Sens? The guy was awesome in Game 1. I'm trying to think of others - Claude Lemieux maybe - who get jacked for playoffs and step it up a level.
SnipeShow 0 Report post Posted April 11, 2008 i really dont like this guy. he doesnt go one period without hitting someone high, from behind. everytime he does it all he ever says is "i didnt see him" or "he turned at the last second". just silly. gotta give credit where it is due and agree he did play a good game and does have a thing about burning the sens when it counts. awingsincebirth 0 Report post Posted April 11, 2008 I'd LOVE to have Gary Roberts................ Then again, we'd probably never play the Sens in the Playoffs, soooo he'd be pretty much useless.
Yak19 303 Report post Posted April 11, 2008 (edited) Some players are built for the playoffs, Roberts, Yelle, Clowe all had great games. Not really superstars but players that play hard nose and this is the time of the year that this kind of play pays off the most. I predicted Mikko Koivu would be a beast in the playoffs, the wild lost game 1 but he had 1g 1a so im not too far off. Roberts knows what to do in the playoffs and i love that he still drops the mitts, hats of to him. Edited April 11, 2008 by Yak19

Yak19 303 Report post Posted April 11, 2008 I also picked the Wild in 7 over Col... Yep, i just dont see Theodore being steady through the series. I think the wild are the bigger and more physical team and can match the Avs ***-4-tat in skill and speed.

Well, the game did go to OT. He played 25:50, which is still a lot for a forward, but in the same game....on the other team, Stastny played more, 26:19. Gary Roberts was cut from the same cloth as guys like Cam Neely, Rick Tocchet, Mark Messier, Brendan Shanahan, etc... They came up in an era where you protected yourself all the time and you kept your stick and elbows up as a general rule. Tough ass SOB's all of them. They don't really make players like that anymore and the league pretty much takes care of the high hit stuff (sort of). I'll never forget a story I heard about Messier years ago during camp, a rookie player/tryout guy was roughing somebody up, maybe Brian Leetch. Anyway, Messier skates up to him and cross checks him in the face, knocking out a bunch of his teeth. Nobody said or did anything about it. That's the way it was. I love Gary Roberts. He's too old for me to want him on my team but if I ever thought about creating a list of forwards that fit the bill of talented, mean, gritty, able to fight and score and lead he'd be on the list. Ahhh some sensibility, I'm not old by any means, 22, but I still respect some of these older guys that play tough and play with skill. Maybe most of these board members are too young to appreciate Gary Roberts, but it's guys like him and Dino and Neely that brought that skill and toughness that lacks in the new NHL, aside from a select few players. Opie 308 Report post Posted April 11, 2008 If you could guarantee me that some one anyone in the NHL will be the next Cam Neely I would trade all of Det current 2nd or 3rd line for him. A guy like that (maybe Lucic) is one hell of a commodity to have, there really aren't enough of those guys anymore, instead the league has given way to the enforcer, which I don't care about a guy like Downey he is clean, but for the most part are just dirty players looking to hurt someone who is better than them, and they make a nice living off of it too!
