FrozenPuck 0 Report post Posted April 25, 2008 Gotta agree with this assessment that Brian Birke did the honorable thing in staying in Anaheim. Rumors had Toronto offering scads of cash and a long-term contract, but Burke decided he needed to work out the final year of his contract. I don't care for Burke, but respect his move here. Oh, and it's nice to see Toronto screwed
betterREDthandead 58 Report post Posted April 25, 2008 The honorable thing? Or simply the smart thing in not wanting to work in such an awful ownership atmosphere in Toronto?
akustyk 84 Report post Posted April 25, 2008 The honorable thing? Or simply the smart thing in not wanting to work in such an awful ownership atmosphere in Toronto? QFT despite looming reduction of talent in Anaheim it's still better team and better place to build strong team. now try this in Toronto. with MLSE? I'm not gonna discuss Burke's class because the whiner doesn't know what this means. but I'll definitely give it to him that he's no idiot to go to Leafs
YoungGuns1340 1 Report post Posted April 25, 2008 Respect for Burke? Why because he stuck with a contract that he signed? Is that what qualifies for honorable these days? Next thing you know people are going to be calling Downie classy because he withheld from throwing a headshot when he had the chance to. Pure class! Sticking with a contract is the only thing he should do. Its not like hes getting paid a pittance to work in Anaheim. I suppose Niedermayer deserves a cookie for deciding to honor his contract too? Detroit # 1 Fan 2,204 Report post Posted April 25, 2008 Respect sure, but 2.5 million in Anaheim, or 23 million in Toronto? Hmm.... I'd take the MONEY.
lfd250 1 Report post Posted April 25, 2008 Who you kidding, Burke would trade his own brother. Until Toronto hires someone, he's still in the running. He too is waiting to see who comes back. Face it, hockey rules are still made in the Eastern Conf. Burke is 4 hours behind. Betass has to wake him up early if something has to be decided by 8am EST. toby91_ca 620 Report post Posted April 25, 2008 Did anyone hear anything about the story that Bettman actually got involved and put a stop to any potential of Burke leaving Anahiem to go to Toronto? That's the extent of what I heard. I just heard a quick recap of the story and didn't get the full details. If this is true, I think I would fully be on the bandwagon of Bettman haters. Not because I'm dying to see Burke go to Toronto, just because of the principle of the whole thing. If true, it woudl appear painfully obvious to me that he is out to protect the southern US hockey teams.
edicius 3,269 Report post Posted April 25, 2008 I never believe anything Burke says anyway, so I still wouldn't be surprised to see him end up in Toronto.

Take a chill pill already. Had Burke bolted for Toronto there would have been countless thread about how classless he is for bailing on Anaheim and his contract. This doesn't mean Burke is the classiest guy ever but I understand him being applauded. We applaud anyone who takes less money to honor their contract. You may say its a sad state of affairs and I agree that if you have a contract you honor it and you shouldn't be applauded for doing your obligation. However, so many others have not honored their contracts in the past so it is, however unfortunate, something to be applauded. At least a small, golf clap type of applause anyway.
