vangvace 12 Report post Posted May 4, 2008 (edited) I hate to break this argument out, but technically, octopuses is the correct plural, not octopi. Octopi is a misconception.. it's used with the assumption that octopus is latin, thus making the masculine plural transition from octopus to octopi. However, it is not, it is latinized greek.. thus, the actual proper modernized plural would be octopuses. The proper latinized greek plural would actually be octopodes, but it's usually argued as pedantic--thus, octopuses, not octopodes, and certainly not octopi. (In fact, if you look at the red underlining auto spell checker in here.. though the red is hard to see, octopuses is the only one of the three that it doesn't underline) link oc·to·pus Audio Help (ŏk'tə-pəs) Pronunciation Key n. pl. oc·to·pus·es or oc·to·pi (-pī') 1. Any of numerous carnivorous marine mollusks of the genus Octopus or related genera, found worldwide. The octopus has a rounded soft body, eight tentacles with each bearing two rows of suckers, a large distinct head, and a strong beaklike mouth. Also called devilfish. 2. Something, such as a multinational corporation, that has many powerful, centrally controlled branches. Spellcheckers are only as good as the database it's built on. Coolio Mendez 7 Report post Posted May 4, 2008 Doesn't mean I thought white-outs were a good idea either. Certainly didn't manage to get them to work as well as they used to in Winnipeg. Pompoms and thundersticks aren't exactly another team's tradition. Way too widespread. I suppose you could say towels belong to the Pittsburgh Steelers. I wouldn't really have a cow if they stopped showing up at the Joe. But the theme of this thread is, "hey, look how cool it is when Calgary does it, let's do it too." That's pretty specifically tradition-borrowing. Calgary has their C of Red. We chuck octopi. It was dumb when Oilers' fans decided to throw beef, and it would be dumb if we copied Calgary. Doing what the Orlando Magic do isn't any better. I don't see why we can't be happy with our octopi, why we need to copycat other fans too. Read the question again big guy, the only time Calgary is brought up is when I say "heres a pic of what the sea of red looks like", no where does it say let's copy Calgary ". I don't see how the Wings would be "copying" the Flames. It seems every team left in the NHL, and NBA playoffs seem to be sporting there team colors.
Coolio Mendez 7 Report post Posted May 4, 2008 Half of the bleachers are red, while the other half is white. It's simple divide the bleachers and on the tickets it will say wear red, and the other, it will say wear white. Far fetched, but the Magic do it, it's cool. That my friend is a golden idea! RockyMountainWingGal 108 Report post Posted May 4, 2008 Sea of Red? That's what we had going in the Pepsi Can in the third period after all the Avs fans left. Seriously sometimes when you look at a non-home game you see almost as much red as the Joe (well not quite but close it seems). Anyhow, I find the sea of fans in one color kind of annoying personally - when I watch a Flames game or something for example.... just m.o.

CrossCheck24 2 Report post Posted May 4, 2008 The wizards did the white out for the series with the cavs. Looked pretty ridiculous when they were losing by 30 and everyone is all dejected. Go with the towels, I've got a red jersey and if they did a whiteout, I don't think it would participate. I would just wear my jersey
Dawgs 0 Report post Posted May 4, 2008 Even NBA teams do this now. Its passe` and makes the fans look unsophisticated. Its like the wave now. Done that, lets move on.... please.
Yzerfan75 0 Report post Posted May 4, 2008 Red wig thing is linked to Commodore. At least when he was with Calgary and Carolina (not sure with Ottawa). I DID like his bathrobe thing. Hurricanes jumped on that pretty quickly; you could buy one in the kiosks at the RBC Center during the playoffs. In deffence to why we dont do it it could be this. There are many a fans who have jerseys some home colours some away colours, I myself have the current away coloured jersey and that is what i would want to wear to a game, If they called for a sea of red I might look kind of out of place in my lone white jersey but, that wouldnt be the case cause I know Im not the only guy who has a white jersey that would want to wear it and mess up a sea of red. On a side note in the past there was a game Im not sure who they played or what arena it was in but there was this red balloon that was bounced around in the crowd just about the whole game it made a few tv appearances i have a feeling it was vs Toronto back in the day. To add to ideas to whole whole pass out t shirts towels pom poms how about red or white curly haired clown wigs.

I don't see how the Wings would be "copying" the Flames. Ah, that must be why you used Calgary's name for it. (Sea, C, what's the difference?) Let's see - if the Flames invented the idea of everyone wearing red to the game, and then the Wings decided to have everyone wear red to the game....why, I believe that would be considered the same exact thing.
