Rich Rod ruining Michigan tradition?

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

I dont like to post something without a source but I heard this on the Jim Rome show this afternoon and I was shocked. Apparently Rich Rod has given the #1 jersey not to a WR who has earned the right to wear the historical jersey but to a freshman DB. I tried to look this up but got no where. Like I said, I heard it on the Jim Rome radio show and normally he is pretty good about not talking about something without it at least being accurate. I am interested in this article because if this is true, this is a slap in the face on years and years of tradition. Braylon Edwards was quoted by Rome as saying that he is gonna give Rich "the call". I hope more alumni do this because as much as I hate UM, they have a rich tradition that shouldnt be ignored.

Also curious to hear what Michigan fans feel about Boren transferring to The Ohio State University. Mallett leaving is one thing being he is a QB that doesnt fit the system of Rich Rods, but Boren was a starting offense lineman...entering his jr year.

The whole thing is just a mess to me and wonder what is next. Will Rich Rod change the helmet or jersey style?? The possibilities are endless and scary.

It's in both the Freep and the News.

No, the possibilities are not endless. RR is not going to change the helmets and such.....don't get so worked up.

And really...it's kind of a misnomer that a WR has to earn the #1 jersey - Braylon was the only one that didn't wear it starting as a freshman. But it is a WR tradition. I do hope Braylon's phone call convinces RR to make the switch, especially since there are conditions attached to the scholarship that Braylon endowed.

But c'mon....don't make it sound like it's such a mess that the winged helmets and everything are in danger.

The Buckeyes can have J****n B***n. He's no Wolverine.

Red touched it a little above, but I think the No. 1 jersey was more of a tradition to the fans. If you think about it the jersey didn't become "legend" until Carr played mind games with Braylon saying he couldn't switch numbers unless he picked up his game (he was No. 80 his first 3 years). Yes, great U-M WR have worn it before Braylon, but they actually worn it since they arrived on campus such as Terrell/Carter.

I read Braylon said he was going to call Rich Rod about it, and wasn't that upset (he's actually training with the new S/C coach). After Edwards graduated he made a scholarship fund for whoever wore the No. 1 jersey, and they had to meet requirements including their off the field work/GPA. Maybe RR didn't know that yet....I doubt anyone wears No. 1 come fall.

As for Boren...I have no problem with his choice of leaving. He must of felt he didn't fit in, or couldn't handle the new, intense workouts, BUT throwing U-M under the bus, and going to OSU is not acceptable. I hope he gets buried in the depth chart, and regrets his decision the rest of his life. "THOSE WHO STAY..."

As for Mallett....I bet he would have left even if Miles came, or anyone else. Sounded like he alienated teammates, hated the weather, and hated how far away he was from home. RR coming was a perfect excuse to leave....

Sounds like Dick Rod might not be a Michigan Man®

Has anyone consulted Mike Hart? Last I heard, he was the final arbitrator on who is and is not a Michigan Man®. Poor Jim Harbaugh, got stripped of his title for speaking the truth.

Good. I hope Rod continues to mess with Michigan "tradition." Because the only "tradition" we've had lately is one of employing stale, outdated tactics and training techniques and wasting five-star talent because of entrenched, mindless, inflexible "tradition." Rodriguez' job was to come in and change the culture of Michigan football and bring it into the modern era. If this is one of the small things he needs to do, so be it. My goodness.

Oh, and BlakChamber, the only positive tradition we've had lately is breaking State's heart. So pipe down. ;)

Last I heard Hart finished his career with a decent 674 yards against Little Brother.

If Jim Harabaugh spoke the truth Jim Carty wouldn't be ashamed of his latest "investigation" for the rest of his life.

Except not. But keep holding onto something, little brother.

Go back, check out the list of what the guys from the 97 Michigan team are doing now, and then tell me if it sounds like those guys were woefully unprepared to work in the real world and that Michigan turned their back on them.

Like Harbaugh knows what the hell goes into a General Studies degree or how it does or doesn't prepare you for the real world. He was talking out of his ass to support his own agenda, he had a platform to do so, and the people who are looking for any reason to bash Michigan ate it up. So be it. He can just keep on telling recruits that if they come to Stanford they'll be guaranteed $100k out of school even if the football thing doesn't work out.
