Datsyerberger 279 Report post Posted May 14, 2008 Yea. The sad part is this has been a prime example of the quality of the officiating all playoffs. I'm hardly rooting for the Flyers, I just want to see an ATTEMPT at consistency. (besides calling any stick that looks like it might be coming up a hook)
Vincanni 1 Report post Posted May 14, 2008 I'm actually having a really hard time watching this game, the Philly fans are so annoying, booing at every clear cut call against the Flyers and booing every non-call, which again is clear (see Gonchar play). I agree entirely, classless mob-like intellect were all homerism is amplified, though I like their enthusiasm just feel they boo way too much.

toby91_ca 620 Report post Posted May 14, 2008 (edited) For the record, I thought it was a good play by Gonchar. You can bet your ass if it had been done vs Malkin or Crosby and they'd have gone down, it woulda been a trip, though. That is such a load of BS, why are so many sucked in so easily to think refs make calls in favour of these guys? Is anyone actually watching the game and seeing the abuse Malkin is taking? He gets hit when the puck isn't even on screen. I'm not saying there should be calls as similar stuff is happening all over the place both ways, just pointing out that there is no preferential treatment. People that think this are simply blind and buying into the propaganda being spewed by the media of the particular city that the Pens are playing against. Datsyerberger 279 Report post Posted May 14, 2008 I'm sorry, but if you ask 100 refs to review that play, 100 of them call it a penalty. I'm actually having a really hard time watching this game, the Philly fans are so annoying, booing at every clear cut call against the Flyers and booing every non-call, which again is clear (see Gonchar play). Yea, but how many of those 100 call it a trip and how many of them call it a dive? Far as I could tell, Malkin kept on skating after getting hung up then decided to drop for the show. I understand it's just the way things are done, but that doesn't make it any less annoying to watch sometimes. Oh well, I'll go watch that video of Ribiero writhing around like a fool again to feel better.

Sorry, there's no way that was a penalty. He got the puck first; clearly shown in the replay. Nice defensive play. Stupid play on the Flyers part; had a guy wide open coming behind him, should have passed it off.

Because people DO get called for weak stuff on Crosby a lot, and it's very, very noticeable when it does happen. Anyway, that was a sick play by Jones on that 3 on 1. I think he was talking about the trip penalty vs Malkin, not the lack thereof against Gonchar (that one shouldn't have been a penalty).

toby91_ca 620 Report post Posted May 14, 2008 I agree entirely, classless mob-like intellect were all homerism is amplified, though I like their enthusiasm just feel they boo way too much. And you know what ends up happening? Uninformed fans and media think the booing fans must be right and all you hear about the next day is how one-sided the refs have been. For the record, I think the only weak call in the game so far is the hooking call against Hossa where he lifted is stick with one hand and tapped a guy. I'm sure the ref was calling it as a make up call (which I hate), but there was no marginal calls to make up for.
Datsyerberger 279 Report post Posted May 14, 2008 Because people DO get called for weak stuff on Crosby a lot, and it's very, very noticeable when it does happen. Given the extent to which officiating in other games tends to favor the star players and league pretty boys, particularly games *ahem* more popular than hockey in the US, it takes little to convince me that the whole star player fondling fetish is rubbing off on the god awful leadership the NHL has now and they're trying it in a lame attempt to shape the NHL in their image. But god, let's not start that rant now, so I'm gonna cut this short and say that's the end of this argument either way from me. Feel free to reply if you want, I'm just not gonna counter reply.. we'll add 3 pages XD

That call was referenced in my snide "calling a hook whenever a stick looks like it may be coming up" comment earlier. I loathe make-up calling. It awards the less disciplined teams with powerplay time in an attempt to look equal. (See Wings vs Ducks last year, ugh)

McCartyFanForLife 17 Report post Posted May 14, 2008 It's really too bad that the East has the most exciting players though yeah; there's no way they'd get exposure otherwise. Can't play on the west coast cause Bettman wouldn't allow it; he'd make all the games start before 6P Pacific time so that the Eastern side of the US could see the star players. Datsyerberger 279 Report post Posted May 14, 2008 It's really too bad that the East has the most exciting hyped players though The West has players that are just as exciting to watch (including a couple on the Wings). They have to overhype the good players in the east to make the conference in general seem less crappy. (I'm not saying they aren't skilled, because they are! they just get extra hype)

Datsyerberger 279 Report post Posted May 14, 2008 Yea... either the Flyers were lucky to make it as far as the ECF, or the Pens have the east dominated as much as the Wings have been ripping up the west.
