I'm torn between the instigator rule and getting rid of the trapezoid. Goalies should have free run of the ice too
Shaman 713 Report post Posted May 23, 2008 Why do you want that rule back? Because i like defensive play and hate watching players cherry pick waiting for their Dmen to get the puck and pass it across the ice to them for a break away. Takes no skill to cherry pick. haroldsnepsts 4,826 Report post Posted May 23, 2008 I feel like we just had a poll on this one... But i'm changing my answer, though technically it's probably more than one rule. Eliminate the shootout. But I would want 10 minutes of 4 on 4 OT. Back to 2 points for the win, one for a tie. No points for losing in hockey.
CAredwingsfan91 28 Report post Posted May 23, 2008 Ever watch AO a lot of his break aways are what would have been 2 line passes in the old NHL. i thought for sure you were hinting at Malkin when he scored against Biron i know he got hit or something but still he could have hustled back. I see where you are getting at but they did this to open up the game for players like Z, Dats, Crysby, Malkin (he looks like he has down syndrome), Nash, players with speed that can "entertain" the fans. Nash can dazzle open ice or not, any of these players are capable of making some great plays but sometimes you just have to change things around. I like it I hope they won't ever think about changing it.

Donaldjr2448 43 Report post Posted May 24, 2008 I would first get rid of the delay if game penalty when a player clears the puck over the glass, however if the ref feels that the player did it on purpose then a penalty can be enforced! The automatic thing kills me. Also I agree with getting rid of the shootouts! 2 Points for a win, and 1 for a tie. I just don't feel that teams are trying to win games in the 5 minute overtime anymore, because they know they already have a point and they feel better about the s***out, I mean shootout. Plus how can something like the shootout mean something in the reg season and have the potential to eliminate a team from playoff contention, yet not be in the playoffs?? 4on4 10 minute overtimes is the way it should be!! I agree....I'd get rid of the trapezoid and if they wander out of the crease to play the puck then they can get rocked like anyone else. That would keep guys like Turco in the crease. I 100% agree with everything mentioned in this post, i would love a 10 minute OT, and if you lose, you lose, no we feel bad that you had to take a loss in a sudden death situation so we are giving you a point crap. Opie 308 Report post Posted June 30, 2008 (edited) The American Hockey League is the official NHL guinea pig (or canary in a coal mine for the pessimists) when it comes to rules changes. That's where the overtime skills competition got its trial run, before it started bastardizing the notion of "team sports" in the NHL regular season. Now, upon the NHL's suggestion, the AHL will be the testing ground for one-minute minor penalties in overtime during the regular season. The Toronto Star reported earlier this year that "39 percent of the penalties in OT that have resulted in a 4-on-3 power play have produced the winning goal in NHL games." A two-minute minor penalty can literally leave a team shorthanded for 40 percent of overtime when the same call would eat up about 3 percent of regulation. So empirically, this rule change experiment is worth a shot. That is until you hear the potential details of the AHL overtime amendment. According to Jason Chaimovitch, Vice President of Communications for the AHL, a minor penalty called in regulation whose time carries over to OT will have its remaining time cut in half, under one proposed form of the new rule. His example: A minor penalty that carries over 50 seconds into overtime will actually only result in a 25-second power-play during sudden death. What this does, in effect, is reduce the punishment for a desperation minor penalty at the end of regulation. Raise your hand if you think a defensive player might kill or maim to prevent a goal knowing that his team would only be shorthanded for, at most, under a minute in the OT? No sir, I don't think I like it. Chaimovitch said the rule still needs to be finalized, which means these details could change. The AHL also adopted NHL standards on icing, high-sticking, face-off location and finally came around to the "over the glass" delay of game penalty for defensive player. They held out as long as they could on that one; rejecting the rule after a test in 2002-03 and making the penalty for that kind of delay a simple loss of a line change. But the AHL must keeps its rules in line with the NHL. Somewhere, Don Cherry weeps into a Technicolor suit jacket. Apparently the AHl is the new testing arena for the NHL rule changes!
