Does Downey get a ring, name on the cup?

I can't remember what the rules are for being officially on the cup winning roster. I know if you play X number of games in the post-season, and I think some number of regular season games. This guy was huge for us this year and such a team guy. I was just curious if anyone remembers the rules and if Arron will get his due at the end.

Thanks and Go Wings

Think it's like 25 regular season games minimum to get your name on it, although not 100% sure - correct me if im wrong, homer got it in 97 even though it didnt play much

And as far as im concerned Downey isn't important at all, he's too small for an enforcer and his hockey skillz aint enough for being a red wing. Sad but true.

You need to have played 41 games or at least 1 game in the Finals. Downey has played 56 games, so his name goes on if they win.

Had he only played 39 games, the Wings could petition to have his name added, but I think it would be a tough argument as I am not sure the what the extenuating circumstances would be that have kept him from playing.

I met Aaron at Greektown after game 2. He was very unhappy about not playing in the finals, but he was very, very friendly and accomodating. Big, big man as well. He'll get his name on the Cup, but let's face it, it's not the same as actually playing in the finals. I feel for the guy.

I think had that been the case with Downey you would see your Second Jiri Slegr.

Jiri was acquired at the deadline, played 8 games for the wings in the regular season, but got to play for Fisch when he was out for the cross check.

Slegr played 1 SCF game and his name will forever be on the cup now.

I do believe other teams have used the petition and got players names on the cup, for injuries or other reasons.

Downey is a "big guy"? I never would of thought that. He seemed pretty average size to me for a pro athlete or even the general public. Isn't he only about 6 foot even, like 210? That's not really that big. I could be wrong about those attributes though. Acutally undersized considering the job he does.

What's more interesting is that Hasek will just barely qualify. He played in 41 games in the regular season and it is not likely that he will get into a SCF game.

I believe since he is dressed it counts or else there would be very few back ups to ever get their name on the cup

Hasek's fine and dandy. He played great for most of the regular season even if he did have a few rough games in the playoffs.

Of course Downey deserves credit and will get it IF the Wings win the cup. I'm not going to count my chickens before they hatch. (but I do want to have some chicken dinner tonight ;) )

That's true. I didn't think about that. I was thinking only of the numbers.

As a goaltender, being dressed = being in the lineup.

I'd guess he means that Downey's a big guy in terms of muscle. He seems solidly built- add to that how low his body fat would be as an NHL player and I imagine he's got slabs of muscle. Having slabs of muscle is basically his sole job :D

Yes, backup goalies do not have to step on the ice to get credit for games played. No players to really. If you are on the game sheet and simply sit on the bench, then you get credit for a game played.

How can you "feel" for him? Who would he replace? Would you feel for the replaced player too?

Team is the most important thing, not individuals. Downey is not even average player, it is completly OK that he does not play.

I may be wrong, but I was watching NHL Live! a few weeks ago and they had the "keeper of the cup" on the show and he said that there really aren't any hard and fast rules used as much anymore.....so I'm pretty sure that Downey will be on the Cup. I agree with the others that he's played enough games to get his name on the Cup now, but even if he doesn't qualify initially I don't see the Wings not putting his name on the Cup because of how much he contributed during the regular season, not to mention moving the forklift out of the way before practice the other day in Pittsburgh!

Oh and he'll most definitely get a ring (unless something strange happens) because I heard that the rings are a private thing done by the team and the Cup is the only thing totally affiliated with the NHL......

Go Wings!

I don't think you're understanding what he was saying. It's not that he should have played in someone else's place, I think most people understand why he isn't playing. But Downey worked hard, played his role perfectly, was a great teammate and expressed feeling honored to play for the Detroit Red Wings. I think it's pretty natural, and easy to understand, why fans wish there was "some way" he could have played.

Well, I think I do understand what he posted, maybe I am wrong.

But sorry, I do not understand how can somene wish there was some way Downey could have played.

He is not good enough to make our roster, it's that simple. I am happy he is good teammate and I do like him.

Just a quick note..Downey played 56 games this year, he never played more games in the NHL.. figures.. :)

It's a shame for anyone to play during the regular season and be a part of our success as Presiden'ts Trophy winners and not be able to compete for the Cup. Most decent people would have compassion for anyone under those circumstances. Well, except maybe Pronger.

yep, I listened to that one as well. I believe they said campbell or one of the other higher ups has the final word, but any team can lobby to have a players name put on the cup. I think they said during that show that the Tampa Bay Lightning lobbied to get a players name on the cup that only played like 8 games during the regular season. They stated thier case as he was a pivotal part of the team, off the ice.

The only concrete rule is you need to be a player of the team.

I bet Kopeckey gets his name on there as well.

You get a ring if you are employed by the organization. Name on the cup is half the games of the regular season.

yep, you're correct. I was just saying that on that show the keeper of the cup mentioned that guy from the Lightning to give an example of an organization getting a players name on the cup that doesn't meet the criteria that everyone keeps saying over and over again.

I know that the rules say, I was just mentioning that teams can petition to have them bent.
