Opie 308 Report post Posted June 5, 2008 What I find most impressive is that a good chunk of the players down there he is very good friends with. I am sure as a friend had he just been Stevie Y the hockey player (not the Red Wing Legend) he would have been one of the first people with his arms wrapped around Lids, Ozzie, Draper, Maltby, D-mac, Dats, but knowing he would over shadow he stayed back in the shadows and allowed these guys to have their moment. Would it have impacted any of them if he were there, probably not, but the chance that him being their would spoil even one iota of the moment is what kept him in the background as some of his best friends celebrated. It had to be hard to have restraint to not go rushing down out of happiness and joy, he stopped and thought about others first. Seems pretty typical Stevie Y s*** to me, but is not typical at all! wingfan1991 221 Report post Posted June 5, 2008 I too was very disappointed that he didnt come down.. was dying to see him hoist the Cup. Is there any footage at all of him down in the dressing room, or on the ice at all from Detroit news/reports.. cause nothing was on CBC/NBC telecasts. I did read in the FreeP that he was in the dressing and hugged Babcock. So someone must have pics/vids?

haroldsnepsts 4,826 Report post Posted June 5, 2008 And still the only guy to lift the Campbell Trophy over his head, take it to the locker room, and still win the Cup. I remember that! Was that in 02? or 98? Because I'm pretty sure he wouldn't have done it the first time... Normally people are so superstitious, and Yzerman just grabs the thing and hoists it up smiling and walks off.

Yzermania19 1 Report post Posted June 5, 2008 Jesus has no need for silly superstitions. IIRC, he did that in 1995 and they did not win the Cup that year. When they won the Campbell Trophy again in 1997, he wouldn't touch it. In fact I remember a photo of the trophy sitting all by itself on an overturned Gatorade bucket in a corner of the locker room, completely ignored. Regardless, I don't know if there is anything I can add to what the others have said. Stevie always has been, still is and always will be a class act. He doesn't have an arrogant bone in his body. He is the most selfless team player - even in retirement - that professional sports has ever seen. He's still so humble, it's amazing. I love him and when he does stuff like what he did last night -- basically stay away and let the team celebrate *their* Cup - it makes me love him even more. What an amazing person. QUOTE (wingnut40 @ June 5, 2008 - 05:22PM) * Who's the other one? Stevie is 2nd only to Jesus IMO. Yep, that's about right, IMO.
Yzermania19 1 Report post Posted June 6, 2008 This article was in the Detroit Free Press today...it just confirms everything this thread has said about Stevie - The emotions poured in equal ease with the sweat. A long night’s journey reached its desired conclusion and unbridled revelry was the reward. Nicklas Lidstrom wouldn’t surrender the Stanley Cup through the endless media interviews on the Mellon Arena ice. Never has carrying 35 pounds been so easy. Red Wings owner Mike Ilitch’s eyes welled up when he spoke about how much another Stanley Cup championship could bolster a Detroit psyche beaten down through economic and political strife. General manager Ken Holland pulled out a victory cigar from his pocket. But there was a face missing among the revelers. Steve Yzerman stayed upstairs in the Wings’ executive guest suite at Mellon Arena. Ilitch and Holland begged him to join the ensuing celebration on the ice, but the former captain-turned-team vice president declined. “It’s their opportunity to get all the attention,” he said. It was commendable. It was classy. Yzerman had his day. He had his time basking in the spotlight. This was Lidstrom’s moment. Electrophile 3,554 Report post Posted June 6, 2008 I don't think there's a hockey player, nay human being (aside from friends and family), I love and respect more than Steve Yzerman. Talk about someone who is the living definition of class, humility and respect.

pavyaz19 1 Report post Posted June 6, 2008 I'm not sure the previous poster was correct about how Yzerman handled the Campbell Bowl... I do remember in '95 when he held it over his head like the Cup... then in '97, he DID indeed touch the bowl, but he made no event of it. He accepted the bowl, grabbed it with one hand and skated quickly off the ice. The announcers commented on how he didn't show any emotion, yet he did indeed take it himself to the locker room as if it were the red-headed step child. wingedone 0 Report post Posted June 6, 2008 Yep, knowing him publicly over the years it doesn't surprise me at all. Out all for major sports (NBA, MLB, NHL AND NHL); only NHL has the most professional, soft spoken and still the toughest guys. NFL plays 16 games a year and I can only wonder if they could ever compete at NHL level physically. (82 + playoffs) HOCKEY RULES. GO WINGS. +1 milllion. Stevie is still the #1 wing for me too. I hope he is in the parade today, but I doubt it.
