To be fair, his wife was pregnant and pregnant woman arent allowed to fly so that probably played a big part as to why she stayed home. But yeah hes a california boy with a Cali family and lifestyle, he may want to head back west as much as it sucks.

The weather here does have Detroit beat.

But I would rather he stay in Detroit and commute....of course for selfish reasons.

But I can't say thats a way to raise a kid.

Honestly, if I were him, I'd probably pick NorCal. He'd get more money, he'd get more years, it would provide for a better family/living arrangement, he'd have an bigger role on the blue line, etc.

The only real downside is the rainy season, which can be a *****. Small price to pay, though. :hehe:

Actually, it is. Stuart's wife has to stay in California to keep custody of her child from a previous marriage.

Oh really, is it that bad :/

Weird laws in the U.S, what can I say :(

Just so we can clear the air, Stuart's wife has children from a previous marriage. If she moves from California, she loses custody of her children.

When you consider that, and the fact that we're asking him to take a paycut thats probably 1M less than market value, then its not likely that hes coming back. That said, its still possible that he does come back. Robitaille lived in MI while his wife stayed in LA for two years. But then again, Luc didnt have a newborn then.

I would pay him no more than Kronner is making :P... I know that isn't really fair because Kronwall's contract was signed when he wasn't as good of a player, but Stuart I don't think is very spectacular. I would start the negotiations at 3 mill and move up to 3.25.

I think the one thing that's been missed here is the benefit of cost of living here in Detroit. I konow it doesn't affect millionaires as much, but when you consider the AVERAGE home in SJ costs 700K+ then I like to think he'd realize he can live in a lot nicer place in metro D. Even $4M per year won't buy him the nicest neighborhoods in Cali. It certainly will in Detroit.

He's gone. The Wings dont have 3 million or more to throw at a number 4 defenceman right now.

Actually, they do -- or they wouldn't be intested in bringing him back, period. I think the lowest the negotations would even start would be $3-million per season.

I liked Stewie, he played well when he was healthy. I think that the broken finger hindered him throughout the post, he wasn't on the point on the 2nd PP unit that often.

I think a 100% healthy Stuart would be worth $3 million a year, but 4 is pushing it in the cap era on a Cup winning team. In LA $5 mil would fly though.

Stuart isn't a California boy, he was born and raised in Canada.

A $3M+ #4 helped us win the Cup. We most certainly have the money for it.

What else are we going to spend the money on? You holding out hope for Hossa or something?

I'd actually be more excited about a solid defensive signing than a flashy forward for once. Yea, Hossa would be TOTALLY AWESOME, I guess, but look at what having this defensive depth did for our team. Honestly, I don't even expect Holland to go after a Rolston type player this off-season, and start looking in the direction of a defenseman. I mean look at our roster, we don't really have any spots to put any extra players, and we all know some one like Sammy or Maltby, isn't just going to be traded away. We only have two holes #4 D-man, and possibly Drake's spot.

That said seondary scoring still seems like a weakness to me, but it's just moot at this point.

TBH, I'm not so sure thats good for him. IMO, Stuart isn't a top-2 Dman, but he fits perfectly in the Wings system especially as a top-4 guy. He doesn't need to play against the oppositions' top lines here, and thats part of the reason he flourished and also part of the reason why people questioned his value when the Wings picked him up. He was getting top line responsibility on a weak LA team, and he was merely ok against other top lines.

For 08/09

Our estimated cap hit is 39.523 million

That gives us ~16 million free space

We need to sign these players:

Filppula - 2.5 million?

Howard - 1 million?

Ericsson - 1 million?

Chelios - 750k?

*Lilja - 1.5 million?

*Stuart - 3 millon?

* not sure if they stay

That is excellent situation!

For 09/10

Mule will get more money - 3 million?

Zata will get more money - 7 million?

Hudler and Samuelsson will get roughly the same

We really need to sign #4 defenseman for about 3 million, Brad Stuart or someone else, longterm and we are good for years to come!
