Holland Tells Quincey to Work on His Fighting

This is from a poster of red wings central...im sure someone here must have been listening and can shed some more light ;)

"Not sure if you guys listen to XM but they had Kyle Quincey on Live at Wayne Gretzky's and apparently one thing Holland told him to work on is his fighting. He's going to train a bit with Aaron Downey over the summer to be ready in case he needs to drop 'em with some middle weights. I found it interesting considering that never was a priority for Holland with players but I guess that's an element they want Quincey to have."

Sweet. Double Sweet.

Datsyuk can also teach him one of his fighting tricks

This is such an interesting situation trying to figure out what will happen with all of these D-men. Do we possibley see this next season

Lids - Raffie

Nik - Quincey

Lebda - Ericcson

Meech - Cheli

I mean, it saves a lot of $$ for the forwards, and let's be honest, Quincey didn't play this year, but he has playoff experience from '07. That actually looks like a pretty decent line-up. Could be a lot worse.

Yeah, I was listening to that too yesterday on XM. He was talking about how the Wings don't have a lot of fighters and that Holland told him that he should work on that so we could have someone that could fight. He was on there for quite a while talking from everything about Lidstrom being called "The Perfect Human" by the team, to what he has learned from Chelios, to how Downey is a great philospher, what it was like being with the team winning the Cup, how much he liked Babcock as a coach, and a lot more. My lunch break happened to coincide with the time he was on there, and it was enjoyable to listen to.

I love that D lineup but I would like to see Meech in for Lebda. Meech gives you so much more then Lebda.

that would be nice, maybe they count on Q replacing stuart?....if he trains for more fights he brings a bit more to the table than our other defencemen. Stuart is a lot better than Quincey offensively, but all we need is for Quincey to be defensively sound if he plays next to kron because once kron feels comfortable next to someone he will step up on him and ill be happy =D

We'll we could have Ericcson take over for Staurt offensively and then Quincey for Lilja on the 5-6

Unless Downey is signed to a two-way contract, or allowed to pass through waivers again, I don't see how there is room for him on the roster. Supposedly we will carry 8 D-men this year, and with McCarty probably signed as the #13 forward, then I fail to see Downey being a part of the active roster.

Ericsson better learn those techniques too

Ericsson is the kind of defenseman who's too valuable to have sitting in the box during the game. If he were to fight in the Big leagues it would be while on the bottom pairing or in a Pronger-eque "I'll pick my spots and only fight the guys I have a wicked huge advantage over" kinda way. Unlike Q, Ericsson doesn't fight all that much in the AHL, although they both have some fighting penalties under their respective belts.

Ericsson's fought just as much if not more than Quincey over the past two years in the AHL, and there's no such thing as a player who is too valuable to be sitting in the box for a fight, if you pick your spots and you know when to fight, it is well worth the 5 minutes, you'd miss 1, maybe 2 shifts.

same deal with waivers as last year most likely

Actually no, next year we'll have 13 forwards and 8 d-men. 12 of the 13 forward spots are claimed NOT INCLUDING Drake, McCarty, or Helm and they have offered McCarty a contract meaning he will most likely be #13. Downey hit waivers those couple of times last season because either we had no one to send down to GR or no one on IR incase we needed to call up Howard for a game or 2. I think Downey really rejuvenated his career this past year after spending a good chunk in the AHL last season. Obviously not in the numbers category, but he played the most games hes ever played in a season. Unfortunately, that probably means he'll have a good opportunity somewhere else.

On to the main issue: In my eyes, if they are training Quincey to fight then Lilja goes. Lilja rejected a $1mil a year deal earlier, and I think it would be absurd to pay a Dman thats always on the 6/7 bubble more than $750K max. On another note, it will allow Detroit to use Quincey/Meech/Lebda as 4th line a 4th line forward if need be.

Lidstrom - Rafalski

Kronwall - Stuart/Other UFA top 4 dman

Lebda/Meech/Chelios/Quincey - Lebda/Meech/Chelios/Quincey

And like I've said before, Ericsson won't be playing with the Wings next year unless he somehow becomes the second coming of Lidstrom at camp. With 1 more year left before waivers, they will gladly allow him to be top dog in GR.

Same deal as last year... they will expose Downey to waivers (possibly McCarty) to waivers to give the club more options, he can be called up at any given time and he doesn't actually goto Grand Rapids.

Are the Wings offering Mac and Downey 2 way deals? I see this as a good thing. With the amount of

potential skilled prospects that could be playing in GR next season it would make sense to have 1 or 2

guys looking after our next Dats and Z.

And yes Babs does like big Jonathan alot, he gives the Wings that extra size and reach on the blueline.

Is it a coaches call at camp or is he given the cards to play by the GM, the Wings have got to let a D or 2

go this summer but who?

Kindl had a poor year in GR but he nearly made it out of camp the previous year. I seem to recall that Jakub

is a guy that plays better with better players. You gotta earn it thou and this could be a big year for him in

GR's.

Seems to me there somewhat of an unwritten code amongst GMs about players on waivers. I dont think GMs have the intetions of poaching players as viciously as we seem to think. Mac and Downey will be fine if they are to be exposed to waivers.
