NHL Approves Rule Changes on Faceoffs, Icing

The NHL Board of Governors approved 3 rule changes for the upcoming season, regarding faceoffs and icing. No, no touch icing is not part of it...

The first rule is that the first faceoff of a power play will be held in the penalized team's defensive end.

The second is that any contact made during a chase for icing MUST be incidental while going for the puck, instead of being an attempt to check the other player out of any chance of getting the puck.

The third is that if a puck is deflected off the goal frame (i.e. post, crossbar) and into the mesh, the faceoff will stay in the same zone, rather than possibly moving it back to center.

Also, they hinted at changes to come in regards to goalie equipment...

Also, the league announced Wednesday that the board endorsed immediate and long-term recommendations provided by the Goaltender Equipment Working Group and the league's competition committee and will work with goalies and equipment manufacturers on standards for the maximum size of all equipment that a player can wear.

I actually don't mind the new icing rule considering they were thinking about going toward no-touch (which I absolutely don't want). That being said though, I wonder how long this will be tightly called, because as the season wears on and the playoffs roll around, it'll be pretty tough for the refs to make calls like this in a pivotal game.

The more I think about it, the more I'm indifferent and yet not-so sure about this one.

The only one I like is the third.

I don't have a problem with the first Faceoff of a Power Play in the zone where the play stopped. I think having it in the team's zone who's killing the penalty as kind of tacky. Late in games when clinging to a one goal lead, it's not going to be fun having a faceoff in your own zone if the play was called behind their net.

Number two, I agree with NFM, I think it'll be too tough for the refs to call the contact as legit or incidental. It may turn into those annoying hooking and holding calls.

O'Halloran would call it.

Never really thought much of a change to the first rule, doesn't really bug me one way or the other.

I'm actually not sure how much I initially like the 2nd, if two guys are going for an icing play an the one guy who is trying to prevent the icing makes a fair/legit check to prevent it, I don't see the problem in that.

I'm for the 3rd rule there.

I don't mind these changes, I actually like that if the puck bounces off the frame and out it stays in the zone. Its not like it is the team on the offensive's fault that it went out of play. good change

I think this one is less about the closer calls, but more about the player safety on late hits. I have a feeling side-by-side contact won't be called but if a player is fully behind the one touching up. I bet that'll get called quick.

Wow.

So, no more trying to get the puck in deep when you're about to be on a power play? You just, hand it to them and they have to go all the way back?

Why bother pulling the goalie for a 6th man then? Just skate off the ice for a line change and wait for the other team to touch it.

That's a good point.

As for the puck off the goal that one is alright by me.

The icing one seems like it is going to become an issue but I can see how they are trying to protect the players.

This is more of the " High scoring games are exciting!!!!" BS that I really cannot stand.

Good point. Not exactly the same thing, but the most exciting hockey I saw last year was triple OT Game 5 with no scoring! It even pulled in my non hockey fan neighbors - they absolutely loved it. However, that's not the kind of drama you will see in the regular season... thank God, I'm not sure I could take too much of that.
