YoungGuns1340 1 Report post Posted June 23, 2008 Let's face it. Jokinen is not a guy that can produce in the playoffs. As I've said before, the man has scored 0 points in his playoff career. Is that the kind of guy you'd like to have on your team in the clutch? Thats probably because hes never played an NHL playoff game. At any rate, I dont think the Cats traded him because they thought he might not perform in the playoffs. The majority of their roster has never seen a playoff game. The fact that they traded him for a lesser return when 1) his contract had no effect on them financially and 2) its not the trade deadline pretty much signifies that Martin really wanted Jokinen off his roster at all costs. If this is really the case, then I expect Florida to make a pitch for some leadership guys. Jason Smith as a depth addtion on the back end to guide the yound Dmen they have in Allen, JBo, and now Ballard, and a forward up front who can similarly mentor Horton, Frolik, Weiss, Booth, and Matthias. Somebody like Holik, Conroy, Gelinas, Rolston, or Shanahan could go along way in helping out in the leadership/mentoring role up front. Particularly Shanny.. LeDs 0 Report post Posted June 23, 2008 Jokinen went cheap because nobody was offering more than Phoenix. Jokinen has a rep for a bad attitude and he could end up being a cancer. I dont have much confidence in what Pheonix is doing, they seem to be re-making their team all the time and have made several dumb moves.
Dabura 12,232 Report post Posted June 23, 2008 Thats a little different. Dan Cleary never had the statisical clout that would convince GMs and coaches to overlook the fact that he had a bad attitude and work ethic. Earlier in his career people had him pegged for greatness, and for a little while, GMs and coaches did, in fact, overlook his bad work ethic. Obviously he and Jokinen aren't point-for-point similar cases, but I think you get where I'm coming from.
Glubki 17 Report post Posted June 23, 2008 (edited) I think PHX needs to go hard after the top Dmen out there. If they can snag a top two and a top four Dman, they are definately making the playoffs. If I were Wayne I'd demand Campbell to go with Ed. Then try to pick up Liles, Rozival, streit, or someone and then dominate. The Coyotes have operated in the red forever (net loss of 80 Million the past 3 years) and were rumored to be on their way out of the desert before Maloney took over as an advisory GM - he has really helped turn things around by cutting costs and running a tighter ship but Phoenix is still one of those teams that needs to tread slowly and not reach too far or too fast. There is a big difference between having lots of cap space and actually having the money to maximize it. We Red Wings fans are a spoiled lot when it comes to fiscal expectations... Ok, so getting a highly talented CAPTAIN, who will help put goals in the net, and butts in the seats in Pheonix is a dumb move? Keith Ballard is going to be a solid defenseman, but Boynton just gives other teams powerplays with his dumb penalties so its not even that bad. Pheonix is one of my new favourite teams, they are going to be a playoff team soon. Think about: Hanzal Mueller Turris Lisin Doan Jokinen Carcillo Jovanovski Morris Michalek Bryzgalov If they sign a couple role players they could grab a playoff spot. You have to win in order to get people intrested in your team. I don't care if you make a hockey team in a place that has never heard of hockey before, if the team wins then they will get excited. Blind regional superiority is a huge sell, being number one will make a team sound. PHX has a chance at being a contender if they don't let their new found offense come at the expense of defense. They have great youngsters and they need someone on that blueline to lead them.

They have Jovanovski and they may even make a play for Redden but I see Phoenix going after 1-2 defensemen like Brad Stuart, Ron Hainsey, Liles, Commodore and Michael Roszival types at this juncture - they need a couple veteran wingers as well. Just a suggestion: if you're going to have the Coyotes as one of your favorite teams, you may want to learn how to spell "PHOENIX" correctly.
