Sundin Headed to Free Agency

I wonder how he'll look in a Ducks uniform? :D

This has best Gm in the world Brian Burke written all over it, that way Teemu and Neids can fake retirement and join Mats about half way through the season.

In all seriousness though, if he does join the ducks Teemu and Neids will both be back.

And if Sundin does join Anaheim, Corey Perry WON'T be back.

FYI, Anaheim has 50M committed to their cap next year. Thats 6.3M to re-sign Selanne AND Perry. Even moving Schneider wouldnt be enough to crate the room for the 7M contract that Mats wants.

for $7mil, better then he would in a wings imo

Yeah. Itd be so terrible to spend a chunk of money on an elite forward and former captain who could feasibly only look for a one year contract. God forbid we spend some of the 17M we have available on something that cant be qualified as depth.

Yeah but this is the same GM who traded Andy MacDonald to make room, the same GM who watched Bryzzy walk out the door for free, the same GM who thought Bertuzzi was worth 4 mil but his second leading point getter the year before wasn't.

I am not saying the move makes any logistical sense, but it wouldn't surprise me to see him try this, but you are right it would cost him Perry and Schneider and with the cap being at 56.3 losing those two would certainly give them room.

51.105

- 5.75

______

45.355

+ 7.000

______

52.355

Granted it only leaves him 4 mil to fill out his roster, I am just saying I wouldn't put it passed him remember Teemu only cost him 1.5 against the cap last year so who says he doesn't wait again, or doesn't sign a home town discount to get Sundin there and a shot at the cup. And maybe Sundin thinks he has a great shot at the cup in Ana and takes 6 to play for them. Stranger things have happened.

I have always liked Mats. Now, I understand I have a Wings bias (as most of us do) but I think this UFA will show me a lot about Mats' character. That $7 million number has been thrown around, but I wonder if he will sign for that much, or if he will take less, to play on a contender. Obviously in each conference there are a small handfull of teams with the potential.

His signing may show if he is in it with good money and a great shot at the cup, or great money and a good shot at the cup.

If it's a one year deal, the money isn't the issue. If he wants 7 million for one year, some team will give it to him. Since it's only one year, then he's worth the risk. If he wants more years, his cost per year will go down.

Being on the open market should get him at least $7.5 million per year for two years.

There's also still the potential of a sign-and-trade with Toronto after July 1st.

While Mats is as consistent as they come, the open market should not be offering him a 2 year/$15 million contract.

Mats is 37 years old, and the past 3 seasons he's averaged 77.3 points per season. To put in better perspective, Datsyuk is 29, and since the lockout, he's averaged 90.3 points per season, and his current salary would $800,000 less than what you believe Mats should be making.

Could Sundin get a 2 year/$15 million contract on the open market....its possible, but IMO its overpayment at this point of his career.

$6 is more reasonable, and $5-$5.5 if he wants to give his new team a better shot at winning the Cup.

*** Edited to reflect correct numbers from Sundin. ***

Does anyone else find it hilarious that Mats is rumored to want $7 million, yet "all he wants" is to win the Cup?

Yes. I hate when professional sports athletes do this. It's all about the money sometimes.

Mats is 37 years old, and the past 5 seasons he's averaged 61.2 points per season (and that number is skewed due to this season's performance--without it he would've average 57.5 points per season). To put in better perspective, Datsyuk is 29, and since the lockout, he's averaged 90.3 points per season, and his current salary would $800,000 less than what you believe Mats should be making.

I'm not sure where you got your numbers, but Sundin has not put up fewer than 72 points in any of the past five seasons. In fact, he's never had a season with fewer than 72 points, save for the lockout-shortened 1995 season, when he had 47 points in 47 games.

The lack of top-end players on the free market means there will literally be dozens of bidders for Sundin.

WTF.

I'm not sure who's profile I got those numbers from but I swore I was looking at Sundin's. I retract the statement in regards to points.

That being said, I still don't think he's worth $7.5 per at this point of his career and given his lone goal of winning the Cup.

He's never said that.

No he didn't, but my point was what's the purpose of his agent bringing up to the media that the "Leafs were prepared to pay him $7 million" when its clear to everyone that all Mats wants to do is win a Cup. I understand his agent is just trying to do his job and make his money, but you would think Mats would be telling him to put out comments like, "Mats is only interested in going to a contender" or "Mats one and only goal is to win the Cup this season" rather than bring up what the Leafs were supposedly prepared to offer.
