LeftWinger 5,131 Report post Posted June 28, 2008 ...this just in, I can reaf the headlines now! ...Fans turn Fedorov boos to cheers as he skates onto the ice with the #91 Winged Wheel! ...ok now to the subject of my post. Fedorov is approaching 500 goals. I would love to see him get that 500th in a Wings uniform. He would come cheap, probably cheap for a couple of years, if not only one. Hey, he would be my 4th choice behind Rolston, Sundin & Hossa. I'd prefer Feds over Bertuzzi for sure... ...Holland wanted him at the deadline, but refused to give up Filpulla (I am glad.) Maybe Holland is still interested. Sure he wouldn't have that Cup-less veteran drive, but he would bring tons of experience, provide a little scoring, bolster up our power play and like I said, I'd love to see that #500 be scored while wearing a Wings Uniform... ...if you're looking for a small move to shore up our Power Play and give us scoring depth and playoff experience, this is the move. Saves you tons of cash, even though we have tons to throw around for one season, but it also allows you to save cash for the trade deadline if something huge is needed... ....heck with all the names being thrown around as 1 year players, Fedorov may as well be thrown in there, he would probably come the cheapest and like I said, he ranks 4th on my list, maybe 3rd if Sundin is pretty comitted to Montreal... Dabura 12,232 Report post Posted June 28, 2008 The problem with Feds is, even if he were an absolutely perfect fit for the Wings right now, there's that awkwardness. I remember reading about how someone -- Holland or Babs, I believe -- asked some of the Wings who were around for the Fedorov era how they'd feel about having him back. At this point in his career I would not want Feds to take ice time away from Flip or Huds on the second line. However, if he accepts his role and understands that we need his strong defensive play, then I think he would be an upgrade over Draper as the 3rd-line center. This would shift Draper down to the 4th line, preserve his legs for the playoffs and make him more of a Pk and faceoff specialist. It also will allow Helm to play 20 minutes a night in GR and play in all situations, and grow more as a player. Feds also would take Sammy off the point of the PP, and he would obviously fit right in with our system. And, interestingly enough, he was there at Chell's Chilli Bar when the players were celebrating their cup win. Could it be a sign of a reunion? Of all teams though, he ended up in Washington, a playoff team with two of the most talented goal scorers in the game(and russians, to boot), desperately lacking for more leadership and defensive play. He just fits in so well there, is appreciated and they have plenty of money to spend. I now thinkg it would be hard for even the Wings to get him out of there. egroen 384 Report post Posted June 28, 2008 It was a mixed bag amongst management. Coming from the Central, the price was a bit high as well... so that also played into it. We would have had to trade more than Washington did. Ultimately, there were enough of management to not think he was worth it. I am a tad bitter that he had to go when he did, I always thought he'd be a lifer here in Detroit, but oh well. Signing a goalie wastes precious cap space that we need to compete for some better players out there. We don't really need or want anyone else in the goaltending position, at least we shouldn't. We don't NEED anything, but you always want to add if you can. Standing pat rarely works out well. I'm more interested in a Rolston/Bertuzzi type than a Hossa/Sundin type, and those are the types we need to add. Players that will complete the puzzle. I'm not one of those fans with pipe dreams for Hossa or Sundin. And frankly, I'd rather have cap space for emergency than sign a goalie we don't need or even want. The only real need for the Wings is a d-man if Stuart leaves, and the Wings have made it clear that they won't spend over 3 million for that. Remember, the Wings aren't run by idiots, like the Leafs or Oilers. They won't pay anybody more than they're worth. A guy like Rolston isn't gonna sign with the Wings; they don't need him for the money he's asking. Bertuzzi's stock is low enough where I think the Wings could get him for the right price. I'm not that great with numbers, but I think the Wings could sign Stuart (or an equivilant), a cheap back-up, and a 2nd/3rd line player who could put up a moderate amount of points. Granted, I more or less agree with your point -- the Wings are basically set, aside from the Stuart situation. But they could certainly benefit from having a top-tier player, and if it's a desirable and feasible potential pickup, why not go for it. They certainly have enough depth players.
