The Detroit Free Press's Helene St. James confirms that Red Wings GM Ken Holland is leaving no stone unturned as he inquires as to the status of most of the league's top free agents, as well as an "old friend":

After getting the Brad Stuart contract finalized around 11:30 this morning, Red Wings general manager Ken Holland soon after got on the phone to agents for several unrestricted free agent forwards.

Holland told me has spoken to representatives for both Todd Bertuzzi and Mats Sundin. Sundin is one of the most coveted free agents on the market, though, so unless he badly wants to come to Detroit, he's probably going to go out of price range.

Regarding Bertuzzi, whom the Wings traded for in February of 2007 and tried to re-sign last summer, Holland said he would "stay in touch" with Bertuzzi's agent. "I was happy with the job he did here," Holland said of Bertuzzi. "We're exploring."

Strike Flint native Brian Rolston off the list of potential Wings - he's getting offers starting at $4 million and going north, and for far more term, too, than the Wings are willing to consider.

I don't know if it's just me, but I don't want to see Bertuzzi back in Detroit. He seemed a little lazy and not motivated, which isn't exactly a motivator for the Stanley Cup champions to win it again...

Sundin would be great, but I doubt he'll settle for what we're willing to pay him considering he's already been offered $10 million a year.

Hossa?!

So is the old friend Bert or Feds?

Was Fedorov mentioned in that article? No. So they are talking about Bertuzzi. I menioned him the other day and thought he would be a plan B if they couldn't get Sundin or Rolston.

I can't believe he's even considering Bertuzzi. There are so many other 4th line players who, are not only tougher players (Bertuzzi really isn't that tough if you ask me, and he's one of the worst fighters I've ever seen), but don't come with the ridiculous amount of baggage he comes with either.

I really don't want him back. Please go after someone else better.

I for one do not think of Bert as an "old friend" <_<

So if you go by that judgment - what other FA is an "old friend" of Detroit... Sheesh!

It was meant to convey a message...

Bert-Naslund-Morrison

put em on a line together

JUST LIKE OLD TIMES

MAKE IT HAPPEN KENNY*

*Do not make it happen

any of it

for the love of god

Haha wow. I had forgotten they are all free agents. I can't believe that was the best line in the NHL at one point. Now I wouldnt want a single player from that line on the Wings.

Please no to Bertuzzi.

I'm with you on that one. I think that could be a minor mistake to take him back. I mean he didn't want to be here last season. We tried to keep him and he decided to go west.

He didn't have a great year this year. I think that he is past his glory days and don't think that he is worth signing any longer.

Ugh. Signing no one is better than signing Bertuzzi. I'll admit that I was jazzed when we signed him originally...but his play left me less than impressed. Don't wanna go down that road again.

Bert for cheap would be fine, I dont know why everyone is so against it

Yeah I'm not totally against it. He can still be a 20 goal scorer, he's in shape unlike when we got him coming off the injury. And if he signs cheap that leaves room for moves later on. And I'm glad the toughness and fighting argument has come back. It's been a while.
