Pressure now to get Filppula signed

Wouldn't be suprised if someone makes a big offer for flip, just out of spite for the Wings. For all of you who dont really care if he leaves. Where is our secondary scoring going to come from when and if Hossa leaves? As far as the comments on letting Frazen go thats nuts. After Holmstrom he is our best player in front of the net and he is one of our few bigger more physical players. We are going to find out how loyal Flip and Franzen are to the wings. Hopefully they will be like Dats, Z and Lidstrom and take less to stay with the Wings. Should be interesting.

It seems to me, this day would be too good to be true if we locked Flip up as well. Hope he doesn't get poached. I think his career prospects are better here in the longer term. He might get some more $ elsewhere now but could do better by staying here and playing with a great team, and linemates and getting all of the exposure that comes with being on an elite team.

From the Holland interview on the Hossa signing, KH mentioned signing Filpulla and he said he is discussing either short term or long term, and KH said he is fine either way. Sounds extremely positive. At the end of the day, I'm nervous cause I like most want it done, but i think Val is a classy guy and loves it here and its more just a matter of crossing Ts and dotting Is, deciding if he wants to get locked up long term now or more short term to have room for advancement.

KH is the best GM in the league, he isn't going to mortgage one of the Red Wings potential lifers for a one-year contract that we all know is over and done with after this coming season.

Nooooooo we cant lose Flipper! After what I saw in the finals.. no way he can go. Hossa is not worth it. He will sign elsewhere next year anyway where he will get bigger cash.

Yes they can BUT the league has the final say if its a go or not... Nashville tried locking up someone and the numbers were like 1.33 2.5 4.5 for 3 years and the league denied it ... dont quote me on those numbers but it was spaced out dramatically.. .

50.7 "100 Percent Rule" for Multi-Year SPCs. The difference between the stated Player Salary and Bonuses in the first two League Years of an SPC cannot exceed the amount of the lower of the two League Years (or if the same, that "same" amount). Thereafter, in all subsequent League Years of the SPC, the variation in Player Salary and Bonuses from one League Year to another may not exceed that amount.

This is the portion of the CBA Tom Benjamin is referring to when it comes to differing values between years of a multiyear contract, which is illustrated with this example (one of eight provided): "An SPC provides for $2 million in Player Salary in Year 1. In Year 2, the SPC may not provide for less than $1 million, or provide for more than $4 million."

What that means is that many of the various loopholes speculated on over at Sabermetric Research would be invalid. It's also fair to assume that any other type of extreme salary cap circumvention would be frowned upon by the league.

UPDATE The most extreme cap circumvention possible under the terms of the CBA appears to look something like so (taken from a commenter on Benjamin's site):

Year:

1: $10-million

2: $5-million

3: $2.5-million

4: $1.25-million

5: $625,000

6: $500,000

7: $500,000

8: $500,000

9: $500,000

10; $500,000

Cap hit: $2.188-million

Now, let's say the player signed to above contract is in his early 30s, the Chris Drury range, and manages to play four of the 10 years specified on this deal. The cap hit would have been just $2.188-million for those four seasons, but the player in question would have received $18.75-million, or an average of $4.688-million a year, or close to 86 per cent of the total value of the deal.

As far as I can tell, there aren't any provisions in the CBA to prevent a deal like this (although I'm still looking).

The cap hit for any given year is the total number of dollars divided by the total number of years.

For instance, Mike Fischer signed a deal like this ... $6 mil, $4 mil, $4 mil, $4 mil, $3 mil ... that's $21 million over 5-years, with a cap hit of $4.2 mil per year, even in the years that he makes less than the $4.2 mil.

Well, that would be pretty stupid of them if they do. Offer more than $3.9M and the Wings will not match, you'll gain a player you don't want, and it will cost you your 1st, 2nd and 3rd round draft picks.

Honestly, why do people keep coming out with this "someone will offer Flip a contract to spite the Wings" rubbish?

I haven't read any of the first pages in this thread so I apologize for re-hashing any points or stating a Captain Obvious post in advance...

Filppula has said money isn't all that big an issue and he wants to stay with the Wings.

Holland said he will match any offer for him.

While I know this will probably contradict what I said in the first statement, Flipper I think is just seeing what his worth could be in future negotionating compared to similar-type players et al, seeing if he can get a few extra dollars here and there. Can certanily understand why he would do so.

Not worried about his status and the like, I'm confident he'll be back.

Flip ain't going anywhere...

I hope.

There will be enough cheddar left for him, after next year Chelios and Draper or Maltby will probably be done...Meech, Quincy, Helm will all still be on their RFA deals meaing low numbers...Holland will only be challenged to keep the Mule and Zetterberg's contracts from being nutty. At that point you can let Hossa go, if the Wings win the cup again he will be gone to the highest bidder anyway.

I, too, am kind of scared. I don't think he'd SIGN an offer sheet, but the Red Wings are 3.7M away from the cap by my count. And that's without Chelios, Downey, McCarty, and Flip (all of whom Holland has said will work themselves out).

I was thinking Flip was in the 2.5 - 2.8 range.

It's a little bit troubling.

You almost have to think he will get at least as much as Backes just got at 2.5 mill per year. Fill's stats are way better than Backes, unless I am missing something.

I wouldn't be surprised to see him and/or Hudler and/or Lilja moved in the coming hours or days for some decent draft picks.

Moving a D man does make the most sense, but Hudler may have more value. He played well in the playoffs, and I have a hard time believing he will stay after next year due to his lack of ice time. There just isn't enough to go around some times. Stranger things have happened though.

Cosidering Detroit JUST won the cup, the Hossa signing seems almost like a favor to Hossa. I dont think the Holland would have signed Hossa with the sole intention of winning another cup if he didnt know for a fact Flipper was gonna resign, simply because the wings just won a stanley cup. Now if they hadnt won in like 10 or so years, that may be different. Sure, championships are awesome, and I would love the Wings to win every year, but its not like the Wings NEED to win one, and I have a feeling Holland knows that too, thus he wouldnt give away our future for another shot at the cup.

Guest Four

I expect Filpula to sign in the next few days with Detroit with an about 2.75m contract for 2-3 years..

Leaving us no choice but to get rid of one or two people

Well could be why we brought Leano in also, by the way the Wings said Flip was a big reason why he came to Detroit so I would say thats a good sign.

at that time no one thought that signing Hossa was even possible, that means less time to others waiting in the wings... damn.

Consider this, the LA Kings have to spend $15 million toward the cap just to get to the "floor" for this coming season. There isn't too many decent players left who are UFA to spend that money on.

Watch for the to make a play for other team's RFA through ridiculous offer sheets.

I think so far I've been the ONLY one to suggest that Franzen might not be here season after next, and I said immediately after that I would take Franzen over Hossa in a heartbeat. He's a guy that was drafted while he was working in a factory. He rose to the NHL and had a wonderful playoff year. Hossa is some guy that will be here for one year in all likeliness, that I didn't particularly care for, before he signed. Nobody wants Franzen gone, he's a fan favorite.

As for his loyalty to the Wings, I'm thinking he'll take a little less, just like the rest of them. Like I said, drafted out of a factory, shaped his game around what the Wings needed at the time. This guy is loyal. I'm a little worried about Filppula, but I'm relatively confident he'll resign to a decent deal.

Nope. The GM is set on the future, accumulating draft picks, etc. He's not going to give up first-rounders. He'll take any of the decent forwards remaining. Any goalies left? Also, do they have any guys they still need to re-sign?
