The Enforcer 13 Report post Posted July 2, 2008 We need the glue guys for the room now. Plenty of finesse guys, offense. lets get our grinders all locked up. Drake's waiting to see how we do on the free agent front, I suppose. If I were him, I'd be leaning toward retirement, but for the chance at another cup........................... I do think that Drake will be riding off into the sunset (with our thanks for a job well done last season), but I agree that DMac and Downey need to be there. They are needed for morale in so many ways. Kenny was talking about 2-way contracts, and since we still need to sign Flip, it now looks like this is the way they will be signed. Please, Kenny, don't forget our "heart and soul".
Guest Dump-N-Thump Report post Posted July 2, 2008 Its a rule on LGW, you won the stanley cup, so you dont need grinders or character guys anymore..
The Enforcer 13 Report post Posted July 2, 2008 Exactly.....I'd like to see Downey rewarded for his season before Mac though.
HenryMalredo 2 Report post Posted July 2, 2008 Its a rule on LGW, you won the stanley cup, so you dont need grinders or character guys anymore.. Yeah, I remember how essential Downey and Mac were to the team in the playoffs..........
Detroit # 1 Fan 2,204 Report post Posted July 2, 2008 Give them both contracts, 2-way so you can keep them in Detroit even if they get waived, much like last year.
Yzerfan1999 81 Report post Posted July 2, 2008 With not a lot of cap space left, Filpulla should be the next goal on Hollands check list. I bet Drake retires, and D-Mac and Downey can be signed for the league minimum sometime later in July. No rush on those guys, IMO.
10 Minute Misconduct 104 Report post Posted July 2, 2008 We have $4 million for Filppula, Chellios & Quincey. We might not have enough money for a "grinder"...
Detroit # 1 Fan 2,204 Report post Posted July 2, 2008 Yeah, I remember how essential Downey and Mac were to the team in the playoffs.......... Just because they didnt play a role in the playoffs, we shouldnt care? Downey and McCarty are important players during the regular season, on the bench, in the locker room. Fans dont see it as important, but a guy like Kenny Holland sure as hell does.
glasgowcelticwing 18 Report post Posted July 2, 2008 I'd say sign either D Mac or Downey and keep Helm in the line up. i've not heard any more on Drake , is the rumours that he might retire true?

Trust me, fans that are paying attention understand the importance of Downey and McCarty to this team. I think they'll both be back one way or another, probably splitting time throughout the season. Mors 201 Report post Posted July 2, 2008 Judging by this forum, thats not many fans. There's definitely some selective memory involved around here, people love the big hits and the fights when they happen, but quickly forget the value when all is said and done. Personally I feel a lot more comfortable having Downey and Mac around keeping an eye on things...especially in the upcoming season...Avery to Dallas, Tucker to Colorado, Torres to Columbus...we'll be seeing a lot of these scumbags. I've thought Drake will probably retire, but now I want to see him came back and get anohter Cup to make up even more for the ones he missed out on! He were's his heart on his elbow pad, and I love what he does for the team. McCarty too, as well as Downey!

I never said they didn't have some importance, but they're replaceable, and the OP's point seems to be that they were essential for the Cup run, which is not quite true. Ok, well I understand that. I just think Downey is the perfect enforcer for this team, and McCarty is a Wing through and through. They aren't essential for a Cup run, but I'd like to have them there just in case.

That's the most intelligent post so far. Our rivals loaded up with agitators and hitters.....we NEED those guys or Zetterberg, Datsyuk and Hossa will get hurt. For a brief history lesson, look at what Laperriere did to Lidstrom this year. Edited July 2, 2008 by The Enforcer
Rivalred 630 Report post Posted July 2, 2008 (edited) Did anyone say that? NO. Called sarcasm... One member in another thread stated they should sign Lilja to make room for Flip... Makes no sense to sign a player and then trade him away... The Wings will more than likely sign Darren and Downey - speculation on Drake is retirement... I would not mind having him here for another year - but I respect his decision to retire also - Koper could initially take his place - once he gets healthy and back in shape from the knee injury - we shall see... Probert 5 For Fighting 0 Report post Posted July 2, 2008 There is nothing more annoying than fans talking about their team needing gritty, glue, sandpaper, flypaper, bikini wax guy - which is just code for "guy who sucks but can hit or fight". "We need these guys in the locker room" they say. Because if we don't, we risk losing "team chemistry" Because your team can't perform without those bikini wax guys kick and claw and scratch their way on the ice wasting 10 minutes of ice time. The best kind of grittiness is good defense, which is why guys like Drake stuck around. If you can kill penalties and backcheck, you're exactly the kind of grit Babcock is looking for. This team has no need for wasted space in the name of "enforcers" or "glue guys"

Clean hit by Laperriere. And we failed miserably by not knocking one of their stars out, I tell ya!
