Kingston 21 Report post Posted July 3, 2008 Markus Naslund is off the available list for free agents, as the Swedish winger has signed a 2-year contract with the New York Rangers. The unrestricted free agent, who turns 35 on July 30, finished the final campaign of a three-year, $18 million contract with the Vancouver Canucks, where played the last 12 seasons. Acquired from the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1996, Naslund bloomed into one the Canucks' most celebrated players in franchise history. In 1,035 career NHL games, he has 371 goals and 823 points. Drafted by the Penguins in 1991, Naslund won the Lester B. Pearson Award as the NHL's most outstanding player - as voted by his peers - in 2002-03 after finishing second in league scoring with 104 points, including 48 goals. The Rangers also announced the signing of defencemen Dmitri Kalinin to a one-year contract. The 27-year old played 46 games for the Buffalo Sabres and marked one goal and seven assists. In eight seasons with the Sabres, Kalinin has 145 points in 466 games. - TSN.CA
BeeRYCE 2 Report post Posted July 3, 2008 Whatever the price may be, it's a good signing. They have a good crop of top 6 forwards now.
Viperar 16 Report post Posted July 3, 2008 good signing by the rangers!
jawbreaker 0 Report post Posted July 3, 2008 Kalinin is good for them, solid Dman. Naslund... if price is good, then it's a decent signing
Reilly 24 Report post Posted July 3, 2008 They have a good crop of top 6 forwards now. I don't know. Their top is 6 is pretty good on paper, but I don't think it has any scary players. Jagr was the straw that stirred that offense.

Guest mindfly Report post Posted July 3, 2008 Decent signing, i'd say näslund is better than shanahan... Jagr will not be sign with ranger, GM confirmed: "Jagr will not be signing with the Rangers, Rangers GM Glen Sather just confirmed"

Straws are used for sucking aren't they? - Thank god in NYC their drinks are shaken - not stirred - name is Jagr - Jaromir Jagr... It is a good signing by NY for the F and D... Superman54 91 Report post Posted July 3, 2008 Will we ever have a off-season where the Rangers are quite. I never liked Naslund, so this move has little effect on me. If he can become the player he once was, then the Rangers are in a world of glory, otherwise, another washed up player with no heart.
seeinred 1,488 Report post Posted July 3, 2008 Waiting to hear the financial terms before I judge this one. http://weblogs.newsday.com/sports/hockey/r...are_newest.html The original report was 1 year, 4.5, so I wouldn't be surprised if it was 2/9. Good for the Rangers, and good for Naslund.

Good for the Rangers, and good for Naslund. The author of that article needs to check his facts. Naslund, who turns 35 on July 30, was 25-30-55 last season, and had four goals in a dozen playoff games for the Canucks. I wasn't aware that Vancouver made the playoffs last season. I just saw it posted on another forum. Not so sure about those terms anymore. Edit: Oh, those are his 06-07 playoff stats. MacK_Attack 108 Report post Posted July 3, 2008 Naslund's contract, which includes a $1-million signing bonus, will pay him $4 million next season and $3 million in 2009-10.
seeinred 1,488 Report post Posted July 3, 2008 I know, but he referred to it as last seasons' numbers. Well yeah. I just didn't know they were his 07 playoff stats until I looked it up. Oh well, I doubt they paid him anything outrageous, so I'm going to stick with "good signing."
hak 21 Report post Posted July 3, 2008 i think and hope this will be a new and fresh start for naslund. i've always liked him and it's been tough to see him slide last couple of years. but it also seems for me that he's not been happy and comfortable in vancouver last 3-4 seasons so maybe we'll see some of the old naslund in NY. good deal - for all parts

Earthhuman 8 Report post Posted July 4, 2008 My first thought was, "bye Jagr." He wanted to be the highest-paid player in the team, thing is, he has been declining. He needs to soak up some of that ego with a Big Apple-sized sponge.
Earthhuman 8 Report post Posted July 4, 2008 I don't know. Their top is 6 is pretty good on paper, but I don't think it has any scary players. Jagr was the straw that stirred that offense. I watched a lot of Rangers games, and I have to disagree with that. He went into the corner, got the puck, and circled around for awhile before losing the puck. For $8 million. The only reason he was a good deal is that Washington paid half of that. Gomez and Drury and the young guys drive that offense, and there's not much of one in New York. I hope this year will be different.
