Lecavalier re-signs 11 years with TB

Per TSN:

Lecavalier will earn $10-million per season in salary and bonuses for the first six seasons of the deal, before dropping to $8.5-million in 2016-2017, $4-million in 2017-2018, $1.5-million in 2018-2019 and $1-million and 2019-2020.

The declining value in the final years makes it much more palatable to the Lightning if Lecavalier should choose to retire at some point in one of those later years of the deal, but it also serves to lower the average cost of the contract for salary cap purposes.

It seems the reported 9 year, $77m contract was not quite accurate.

I don't know if I would want to be on the same team for that long... I mean what if they are terrible and there is no chance at another Cup? Is there a NTC in there anywhere? Just makes it sound like a crazy investment.

So his cap number works out to roughly $6.8 million a season. Hopefully the Wings can do something similar with Zetterberg and Hossa.

No, it will be 7.72 mil. 85mil/11 years = 7.72mil/year, plus it says the average salary at the end of the TSN article.

TSN is missing a year. I believe it's actually $10 million a year the first 7 years. The cap hit would be a little over $7.7 million each year.

Ah, yeah. TSN is missing a year in the breakdown part. Anyway, if the Wings want to keep Hossa and Zetterberg long-term they're going to have to do something like this I think.

No, I believe the cap number is 6.875. I'll double check that.

Edit: My mistake. That's the current cap number. TB is looking at 7.72 as you guys said after this season.

Numbers like these, in terms of millions of dollars, for me is just unthinkable. I wont ever say the players don't deserve every dollar, but most of us normal everyday joes here won't see a fraction of what some of these guys make in a single season. Can you imagine someone offering you just a million dollars?

Looks like I cultivated the wrong skills as a kiddo.

I thought that no yearly amount in a contract could be less than half of any other year or the average cap hit or something like that. Someone elese's contract was rejected because of that not too long ago.

Nice pick up. The current CBA is in effect until 2011 so this should get rejected based on the "100% rule".

I will. I believe that the only jobs that are actually worth millions of dollars is maybe a job that you have a high probability of getting killed at everyday or one that saves lives regularly......in no way does playing a game for a living justify millions of dollars a year in pay.

However, I would gladly accept the money if I were in their shoes......er, skates. :)

I'm not going to justify all their millions, but I would like to point out that it's a little more than a game. Unlike the rest of us, their job isn't 9-5. They have to play a game virtually every other night all over the country. They're away from home about half the year, constant travel away from families, having to go out and do promotional things, go to practices every day, plus all the NHLPA meetings and what not (if you're active in them). Really, their job takes up their entire lives, 7 days a week. Not saying they deserve ALL that money but I can definitely see why they get paid a lot.

The best players stay put. Loyalty is dying, good to see the odd player believes in it.

yeah, so what's preventing a team from signing Someone for a 20 year, 10 Million dollar contract, with 9 Million the first year, and the extra million, spread out over the next 20.

Would that then be a cap hit of $500,000 a year?

What would then stop them from "renegotiating" that Contract at the end of the year, and come up with the same deal??

Using this method, you could pay a player anything you wanted, while maintaining a minimal cap hit.

All sports contracts are obsene, with basketball at the top of the list.

sports stars are just paid in line with how much money the sport brings in. if you don't like how much money they are paid then you should all stop watching and buying merchandise so that the sport makes less money.

nope soccer is.

Remember David beckham got paid 250 million in one year, now that's ridiculous!

Each year can not be less than half of the previous year.

I agree. Only a very very very small percentage of society could put up with their schedules. Plus they are under huge pressure to perform every game.
