I was just looking at ESPN.com to see if there were any more details on Sundin signing with Vancouver, and they have a caption saying we are still in the mix for his services ... not sure how the hell that's even possible? It's a "rumor central" story and I don't subscribe so I can't read it, but I thought maybe someone else here does and can check it out ... here's the link:

or

rumor central

I had a dream not too long ago that Sundin signed for the leauge min to play here just too make us virtual locks for the cup. We subsequently went like 70-8-4 or some s*** like that and 16-3 in the playoffs =)

the only reason that he's waited so long is due to his motivation, which isn't at the top right now. Expect the earlierst answer next week but could wait until august.

I honestly wouldn't be too surprised if he took a year off. He's said he doesn't want to be a late-season pickup, and it sounds like he doesn't like his options for this season -- current and foreseeable. If he's thinking along the lines of "one last run," I could see him holding out until next offseason, when his suitors may very well be different than the ones he's looking at now (none of which will go all the way this year, even with Sundin's services).

hmm according to this : http://www.nhlnumbers.com/

only montreal would have a real shot of landing him and that is with some trades going on, all the other contenders are pretty hooped. ( teams i think might have a chance at the cup, purely speculation)

I don't know what hooped means but Vancouver has tonnes of cap space. More than Montreal.

To be honest, I kind of feel bad for the guy.

I don't.

He put himself in this position by being wishy-washy as to whether or not he was even going to play this fall. Common sense dicates that most of the nice free-agency locales would be filled up a week into free agency. If he was *that* concerned with winning a Stanley Cup he would've realized that.

The offers were there. He has no one to blame but himself if he's lamenting the lack of options right now.

I should add:

...unless we're talking Dallas and/or SJ. Does anyone know if they've expressed interest?

Likely, it was said that Sundin received up to 20 legit offers on July 1st.

However, it seems that Sundin will play in Canada if he plays at all.

Fair enough. I got the sense, though, that he really wanted to stay a Leaf. Granted, if that was the case, he probably should have manned up and faced the facts so as to avoid the situation he's currently in.

Wonder why it's so important for sundin to play in a canadian team as well as to play in eastern conference, what's wrong with this fella? :S

If his reason is that the culture and life is generally better in canada than U.S, !@$% him... if he doesnt like the west's flights to other teams, !@$% him..

Just for reference everyone, the Wings currently have about $3.5m in free cap space. If he's looking for money, he's not coming to Detroit....but if he wants a Cup the Wings definitely have by far the best shot and still have a decent amount of cap space to him if he wants it.

Furthermore, the Wings have Samuelsson who has a cap hit of $1.2m and could be waived or traded for picks/prospects if necessary to make extra space to pull in Sundin at a salary close to $2m.

If Sundin REALLY wants a Cup above all else, and doesn't care about the money as he professes and intends to leave Toronto...He signs a one-year deal in Detroit for whatever Kenny can afford.

it would be freaking unbeliveable if sundin would sign in Detroit :siren:

Except that, everybody here talks about Sundin, but no one about Selanne. He' s in the sam situation as Matt (probably gone from ANA), and it would quite interesting to see if he want to continue and where he wil end up.

I can imagine MTL coz of Koivu

teemu has already stated that if he comes back it will be ANA and he is willing to take a pay cut if he wants to play again so the ducks could fit him

Could it be that he has "Brett Favre Syndrome"?

:D

Favre was pushed out by the Ted Thompson because his boy (and his first draft pick as the Packers GM -- Aaron Rodgers) is waiting in the Wings. All Favre has done wrong is tell the Packers three years ago that it was okay to draft a quaterback.

But that's for a different thread.

Sundin coming to the Wings would be kind of a joke... when I thought Hossa was out of the question I wanted Sundi as the first option, but if he did not want to sign here for $7 million, he is certainly not going to sign for $3 million.

I hope he holds out longer, just guaranteeing he does not go to a contendor.... which he has almost eliminated all of already. What a weirdo.

Omg mats, what have you done, you won't get a stanley over there :/

As much as I like Mats as a player, I am certainly glad that the Wings didn't waste time for him to make up his friggin' mind.

Part of me almost suspects, however, that he may have really wanted to become a Wing, but got beat to the punch by Hossa, and is now out of luck. Almost, that is.

They kind of did, though. Well, not "waste" in the literal sense. But had Hossa not come out of left field and made a completely unexpected offer to Kenny, the Wings would likely still be courting Sundin.

Right now, barring an act of divine intervention, he won't be a Wing. Not this season, at least. Eva makes a good point, but the great thing about the Hossa signing is that it left/leaves the Wings with elbow room. Mats at 2-3 (which he won't go for...barring divine intervention) would be cutting things way too close for comfort, imo.

I was told that he told the Wings he was not interested in becoming a wing. Who knows, maybe he was wrong.
