Why is Bettmen hated?

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

1) NHL revenues are at their highest level ever ($200MM ahead of 2003-04)

2) Arena attendance is at the highest level ever

3) American local television ratings are at their highest ever

4) Player salaries are at their highest level ever

5) In October 2007, the owners voted 30-0 to give him a 5 year extention

6) In November 2007, the players voted 98.3% to support that extention (and yes, Chelios was one of the 5 dissenters)

He joined a league with 26 teams (Florida and Anaheim started play in his tenure but were named as franchises by John Ziegler)............now it has 30

So why is he hated, and why do fans want him out of the game? (Besides the banning of the octopus)

Rules for starters. I think a lot of die hard hockey fans don't like the "dont touch me with your stick or you'll sit for two" aspect of the game now.

True but the "New NHL" is pulling in more viewers.

Which I am happy for. And I hope the rules bend a little more in the middle of the old and new. I hate clutch and grab but a lot of penalties now are very iffy.

You know what else might bring in more viewers? A 3 point line and panda bears playing goalie and flaming nets.

I don't care how many viewers the NHL has, more is better obviously, but not at the expense of the quality of the game.

I've seen that before on one of those Japanese shows.

I still find the game entertaining to watch, and don't see any downfall to the game besides Dan O'Halloran of course.

I'm annoyed he hasn't gotten rid of the instigator rule already. I'm pretty sure it was introduced before he came along but still - it must at least be changed.

Oh, I still find it entertaining as well, but there are certain things I'd like to see change.

I think most people here are going to watch pretty much no matter what changes he makes. It doesn't mean we have to like it.

ESPN and hockey shouldn't be in the same sentence. They bailed on the NHL years ago, and refuse to show more than :30 of hockey come hockey season. The national spelling bee award gets more air time then hockey. If thats not a kick in the nuts I don't know what is. Why should Bettman ditch Versus when ratings are at there all time high. Lets watch ESPN suffer and see what a great sport there missing, and will come crawling back in a few years.

Don't think freedom of speech exist on this board so i'll just be quiet, but i have my reasons for hating him, leave it at that.

+ the geezer has zero charisma and he talks funny.

When Bettman came into the League, the NHL was bigger than the NBA. Since then, it's only gone downhill. The NHL is now a distant 4th among the major North American sports.

Sorry, this just strikes me as odd.

Posting that you are going to be quiet and keep your opinions to yourself because in your opinion, there is no freedom of speech on this board.

This is an internet message board. Man up, Tiger. Don't be so soft.

Seriously??

1. The candian dollar is stronger (where more hockey fans are)

2. I'm not sure what you're reading but attendance is down all over. Teams aren't selling out like they did before lockout.

3. Tv ratings are down, if you don't have VS you are not going to be able to see every game of your "home team"

4. Bettman has no control over salaries, he's the one that wanted the cap to prevent the high contracts.

5. The owners voted him in because he is saving them money due to the cap.

He has placed teams in cities that true hockey fans can't stand, Nashville-Phoenix-Carolina

Detroit hates him because he uses the team to put fans in the seats on the west coast, rather that putting them in the Eastern Conf where they belong. Canadians hate him because he blocked a team moving from the south to Canada. Most believe that once he keys in on a player (Cindy Crosby) he will do anything to get him the cup.

Bettman is far from my favorite, but the disliking of him gets beyond ridiculous and is overdramatized sometimes. I don't get into the overdramatizations directed towards his way. If the majority of NHL franchise owners are happy with what he's doing, he's not going to be forced to leave his post anytime soon. Hate to disappoint peple, but he has to satisfy the owners first. Fans do come into the equation in all of this obviously, but there is little/no direct correlation between Bettman having to please the fans first. If the owners are happy with him, he stays.

More viewers that don't give a s*** about the game, and have probably never played in their life. And really in the span of a decade, the game has gone from all out war on the ice to no contact figure skating with a puck.
