I don't think any team will trade for Downey. There's better enforcers out there, even in the minors, for them to make a move for a guy like this.

I do, however, see this as lessening McCarty's role on the team, if he does decide to come back.

Downey's got heart, I'd just like to see him get some more points, but then again I guess to do that you may need to log more than 3 mins of ice time.

Can't dislike this signing, he's got a work ethic second to none regardless of his production.

DETROIT -- The Detroit Red Wings have signed tough-guy right wing Aaron Downey to a one-year contract.

The deal was announced Wednesday, but terms were not disclosed.

Downey signed with Detroit last season and played in 56 games. He has spent parts of eight seasons with the Boston Bruins, Chicago Blackhawks, Dallas Stars, St. Louis Blues and Montreal Canadiens.

In his career, Downey has collected seven goals, nine assists and 487 penalty minutes.
