Kira 451 Report post Posted August 15, 2008 From what I hear, if you don't have tickets already, you are s*** out of luck. For the first time since I can remember, the scrimmages and practices are sold out, and I can bet the games probably are too. The Red and White game always sells out. Good luck - I've had my tickets since June.

OsGOD 3 Report post Posted August 15, 2008 i think the best part of the Training Camp is getting the Autographs afterwards.... to me that is much more fun than being in there... at least that was my experience. If you can get tickets to go in sure its great, but if you can't waiting outside for the players to come out and sign is just as, if not more, fun
40#1Fan 0 Report post Posted August 15, 2008 So far this was the hardest year to get tickets for. We did get our tickets for Saturday, Sunday and Monday via fax (faxed at 7:01 a.m. on the first day allowed) - and our reservations have been set at the Grand Traverse Resort since May. Can't wait to go and see Hossa in action!

OsGOD 3 Report post Posted August 15, 2008 anyone who has gone before, how good are the guys about signing autographs? Very good... they come out the side door and do their best signing for everyone there.... obviously you have to bust some heads to get up in front (especially if you are in the arena) because people who aren't in there start congregating early. But we were in the arena and got a ton of autographs!

I know the tickets are pretty much gone but anyone have any tips or suggestions on getting autographs up there? Biggest tip... upon looking at the entrance from the parking lot... go immediately to the left to the side door... stand there and they will come out and sign after their sessions are over. You don't need tickets to get autographs... they sign outside in the parking lot by the side door.

Penky26 2 Report post Posted August 15, 2008 (edited) Instead of an autograph from any red wing player, I'd much rather shake their hand, congratulate them for winning the cup and wish them the best luck for 2009. That would be so much cooler instead of being "just another fan". I'd rather be a human being and grateful for their blood sweat and tears to represent our state. but that's just me. Does asking for an autograph make you less grateful? Does standing outside the rink even without tickets to watch, hoping and waiting to see them and get an autograph describe someone who is not grateful? I use to work at a sports store in high school that would do signing with the Red Wings and the one thing you heard from every player was how amazed they are at people who stand in line and wait and wait and wait just to get a second to see the player and get an autograph. Most of them are GRATEFUL of the fans for being willing to do things like that. Not saying wanting a handshake like you said is wrong but to basically put yourself on some sort of superior level for not wanting an autograph and then describing yourself as being more grateful of them because of it is laughable. Penky26 2 Report post Posted August 15, 2008 I couldnt disagree with you more. More interesting then your opinion is your tone. You have this sense of being better then people who ask for an autograph. You obviously have this belief that anyone that is above the age of 12 and asking for an autograph is looking to make $$$ off of the players. I think you are very jaded with this opinion can I can speak from experience. I try and collect signed pucks from all Red Wings players and hope to one day pass that collection down to a son or grandson, not so he can get rich off of it but because collecting is what I have done since I was 10 years old. Do some players look at signing autographs as a burden? I am sure some do but its been my experience that most of the Wings players I have met are very different. I know with ebay coming about it can make people very jaded towards collectors but you have done a sufficient job of lumping every collector above the age of 12 in with them. There are still people out there that love to collect items from their favorite teams. In the end your right, everyone can have an opinion but yours is a little over the top in my opinion since you basically are saying that people like myself are ungrateful and in your words not mentally sane for wanting one. Just because there are people that look to turn a profit from them doesnt mean you should generalize.
Penky26 2 Report post Posted August 15, 2008 (edited) LMFAO, so you would expect them to say "DAMN ANOTHER F*CKING FAN WANTS ANOTHER G*D-D*MN AUTOGRAPH. CHRIST! - psssst, HEY ZETTER, I'LL BE YOU $2500 THAT WE'LL SEE THIS PRICK'S PUCK ON EBAY WITHIN A WEEK " I use to tell my boss that I liked my (under paid) job. Do you think people say this because they love their job or because they want to keep their job? omg, did I just read that correctly? You seriously believe that? I put myself in a position to be more "superior" to Yzerman because I'd rather buy him a beer and talk to him like a human being, rather than have him sign my napkin with my wife's mascara? I'm "superior" to Chelios because I'd rather go eat at Cheli's Chili and congratulate him on another cup... instead of waiting in like for 16 hours so he can sign a puck? Interesting indeed! No I am saying you come across as sounding like you feel more superior then fans that look for an autograph instead of handshake. And yes I believe players at their word because most of them would stay longer to make sure they turned no one away. Look at Osgood form the parade. He stayed hours to just make sure he signed for everyone. Edited August 15, 2008 by Penky26
Penky26 2 Report post Posted August 15, 2008 (edited) Another thing you should stop and think about. We are talking about hockey players. You keep talking about the financial end of getting an autograph. Driving from Ann Arbor to Traverse City and back will cost me more in gas then a signed puck by any of the players on the Wings. Hockey isnt a top 4 sport nationally so the demand and cost to buy an item online is pretty low but the experience of meeting a player and getting a keepsake is priceless to some people like myself Edited August 15, 2008 by Penky26
Penky26 2 Report post Posted August 15, 2008 (edited) Oh ok your one of those guys. Id love to hear what naive and delusional ideas I have. I am 24 and trust me if you think that you not understanding why people above the age of 12 still collect will keep me up tonight you are wrong. You are more then welcome to your opinion. I was just stating that you have a tone to your thoughts and opinions that suggest you feel your better then people who still collect autographs but whatever you need to say to make yourself feel better is fine. Keep going around collecting your handshakes. Edited August 15, 2008 by Penky26
Hockeymom1960 5,107 Report post Posted August 15, 2008 anyone who has gone before, how good are the guys about signing autographs? Well I went last year and went Sat and Sun. A lot of them signed. Lidstrom and Homer didn't at all on those days .
Hockeymom1960 5,107 Report post Posted August 15, 2008 BTW, my opinion only, is that all the players should get their butts out there at training camp and go through the line and sign. It's not like it's a practice or game dayor even thousands of people out there waiting. They are up there to relax too but for goodness sakes isn't that what the off season is for? Offsides 21 Report post Posted August 15, 2008 Oh Pssh. I collect autographs / autographed items. I also collect other hockey related items. I collect game used sticks and jerseys and if I have one, I like to get it signed. I collect Red Wing memorabilia. I like meeting the players. It's nice to say 'hi', and while it doesn't have the same mystique as it did when I was a kid it's still interesting now and then to meet a player and I don't see the problem with them signing something, it's a nice souvenir. It might be more nobel to get a handshake, I don't know...or maybe a hug, but I don't have the nerve to go out to Stevie yet and say 'how about a hug' ha ha. I'm quite a shy person and don't always say much one way or the other. I don't think it's very nice to put people down about it, but believe me, my feelings aren't hurt. Oh, and I have an eBay business in which I make my living. I've never sold anything I've gotten autographed. I think that there are people who make a living of getting autographs, but simply stating that the only reason anyone would want one for that is personal bias, not reality. These players are playing a game for a living and being paid DAMN well for it...it's part of the job...as long as you're not stalking them I'd see no reason why they should be offended by an autograph, it's not that big of a deal to sign your name. mtuhockey7 23 Report post Posted August 15, 2008 Hmm, I think I'll have to drive down from the U.P. both weekends, weekend #1 to meet Stamkos and the boys, and weekend 2 to see the champs!
Offsides 21 Report post Posted August 16, 2008 I'd like to rebut on this comment. I don't think hockey players are overpaid. I think they are 'leasing' their body for our entertainment (and for their love of the game). They're giving the ultimate sacrifice for hockey. They're job is torn ACL's, broken hands, feet, legs, teeth and even skulls. They'll feel more pain as their body ages compared to a person with normal wear and tear. Their job is to entertain, destroy their body, and to please their fans. So I understand why they must sign autographs.. and I wouldn't doubt that there is a clause in their contracts stating that is a job requirement ( in so many words). Like I told the other guy on here, they are not going to b*tch about signing 100,000 pucks per day... but I wouldn't be sad at all if players cut back on public relations in terms of autographs. In fact, I would totally encourage it. Maybe make it like the rules at McDonald's play area, you have to be this |------tall------| to get an autograph. In addition, I would also endorse a new law to that calls copyright infringement if anyone tries to sell any autographed memorabilia. Look at the signed NHL memorabilia being sold on ebay alone... it's disgusting that low class people would even attempt to bank off an autograph. Again, just my opinion. I didn't say they're overpaid (though it's debatable) but obviously the owners are being paid well off them, I understand that. I said they are getting paid well and that's part of their job. I'm not sure if you are aware but there are plenty of players who you have to pay to get their autograph so I don't see why you couldn't resell said object if you didn't feel like it. It's your property. Also there are legitimate stores that sell autographs and people buy them which shows that there is a demand. If there is a demand then there are fans and collectors willing to buy it, and who really cares? I don't think they are low life. There are questionable tactics, sure, it's not all cut and dry. You posted an eBay like earlier of a jersey. A game used jersey (authentic) costs a fortune. If that is authentic (lots of fakes on eBay too) it probably cost a fortune for that person to buy, then they had to get it signed. If they are selling it off for whatever reason they probably are sad to see it go...if they are a dealer then they probably paid a pretty penny to buy it and at $300 they are currently losing money. If Datsyuk took a couple seconds of his life to sign it, so what. And there's nothing saying Datsyuk wasn't paid for that signature either. The first time I saw Ozzie his signature was $8 and I remember dealers having him sign 10-20 things, and they paid. The second time I saw him it was $25 with Mike Vernon, and the third time it was for charity. I've seen players sign from anywhere from $3-$50. I don't think they are despicable for charging, nor do I think fans are despicable for getting autographs. They are getting paid for going to training camp, for going to games, and they represent the Red Wings. That's why they wear suits, because how often can you get 20 guys into suits. It's part of their job. If you see them at the mall and ask, it might be crossing a line, I'm not debating that point, but I guess that's the price you pay for being a celebrity. At training camp however? Is it too much for an autograph? They should be flattered because most of them are not of the caliber of an Yzerman or the like, but are treated great because they are Red Wings, but they'll be forgotten in a couple of years. Those who dislike the autographs avoid them, believe me, but I'm sure some of them enjoy the attention to some degree, and understand that it's a conduit to meet the fans in a small way. Oh, and maybe they're more comfortable with signing a simple autograph than with someone coming up and wanting to touch them fawning all over them, no matter how sincere.
