From the Colorado Avalanche:

The Colorado Avalanche Hockey Club announced today the signing of Joe Sakic to a one-year contract.

“I am happy to announce the signing of Joe Sakic to a one-year contract,” said Avalanche Executive Vice President and General Manager Francois Giguere. “Our entire organization is very excited to have Joe back for another season. As the only captain of the Avalanche, his record of achievement speaks for itself. Having him return is great for our franchise and community, but also for the game of hockey.”

“Ultimately it came down to the fact that I still enjoy playing and competing,” said Sakic. “I’m comfortable with my conditioning and my overall health. I’m ready for the start of camp and am looking forward to the upcoming season.”

Damn! I was hoping that four game sweep would be the way his career would end. Oh well, hopefully we'll play them in the playoffs again and sweep them one more time.

He's been a class act, but I still can't like a guy who plays for the divealanche, let alone a guy who's been the face of their franchise's history.

Good for him, good for the Avs, good for the league.

Not to knock other athletes, but professional sports needs more Joe Sakics in the world.

If he thinks he still has enough gas left in the tank to give it a go physically to where he can contribute like he's used to, play as long as possible so there's no questions or regets to wander "Do I still have it?"

Too bad for the Avs. Somebody needs to tell them that it is really time to move on. As much as Sakic is a class guy, he's at the end of his career.

Colorado can't win anything if they insist on hanging on to Forsburg, Foote and Sakic. The Wings top players are no longer Yzermann, Shanahan, and Murphy that's why they are at the top of the league and the Avs are not. Granted our top D-man is 38 year old Lidstrom but as he just won another Norris, I don't think anybody would call him washed up.

2007-08 Colorado NHL 44 13 27 40 -4 20 124 10.48

2006-07 Colorado NHL 82 36 64 100 +2 46 258 13.95

2005-06 Colorado NHL 82 32 55 87 +10 60 263 12.17

Tell over a point a game player its time to move on? Maybe he could move onto Detroit because I know I would like to see a player like that here. A class guy who plays hard every shift and doesn't play dirty. Can't ask more from him.

I just like messing with his name and calling him Sak-itch! Colorado was probably on their knees begging him to return, so they have at least a year to figure out their future of a team.

Good for hockey having him back though!

If Lidstrom isn't washed up than neither is Sakic. Forsberg should probably retire while he can still walk/steer an automatic wheelchair. Foote is a solid defensive defenseman.

Just because it worked for Detroit doesn't mean everyone needs to ship all of their older players to Toronto (we all know they'd take them). The kids in Colorado aren't ready, I don't think, to step it up and be elite players. Statsny, Wolski, and Svatos aren't where Dats and Zata were in 06-07.

Most of my childhood heroes have already retired from the game,so it's definitely good to see Joe re-signing.

My last ones were/are Jagr, Feds, Shanny, Sakic. All the others are gone. It's funny, because I love Dats and Z. And on other times, I really enjoy Kovalchuk, Nash, Vinny, Iggy. ... But, it isn't the same. I don't look at them as my idols anymore. So thos four (three I suppose with Jagr taking off) are really the last men standing of the greats I admired in my youth.

Damn, I feel old suddenly, and am in need of Peter Pan and a Never Never Land.

I think Yzerman's standing on the scoring list is safe (likely). If Joe played for 2 more years, he'd probably pass him, but it looks as though this may be his last year. He'll still finish with a higher ppg, but if this is his last year, he'll finish behind Stevie on the scoring list.

It's pretty uncanny how similar these guys actually are, from class, all the way to stats. They are very close in goals and points for regular season and playoffs. Also, they were both born in BC, although, Stevie didn't grow up there.

I know what you mean,it'll always be childhood heroes > players who are the same age or younger than me.
