i just want to know where the sportsmanship was? i wouldn't even think it would be fun after a while. whats the point of embarrassing an obviously inferior opponent? not even a whole lot that can be gained by playing a team so over matched. probably learn more in practice.

right. i mean, after the first period, even if i was the winning team, i'd just want the game to be over. just play keep-away for long stretches of time. the game would take ******* forever with one team constantly scoring, then having to reset the puck, faceoff, etc. maybe the players all just wanted to rack up huge personal totals. *shrug* but, yeah, it seems like there should be some kind of mercy rule here. let's say when the game is 60-0 and the other team doesn't have a single shot on goal.

that being said, i kind of want to see a short clip of the game just to see how it went. i certainly couldn't bear to watch the whole thing, though.

82 goals on 134 shots, and not a single shot on goal for Bulgaria. They lost their other 2 games 30-1 and 42-0.

Here's the box score.

Outscored 157-1 in 3 games... why even bother?

They lost a 4th game 38-0 I believe.

that's 192 goals against in 4 games. That's more goals than the wings gave up in 82 Games last year!! lol

Apparently Bulgaria put in the back up goalie with about 5 minutes left, and she gave up 5 goals on 5 shots in a minute and a half!!

This tournament is to Qualify for the olympics, and goals for Will be a tie breaker stat. With the other teams scoring 30-40 goals, yeah, I'm sure the slovak women just took this game seriously and tried to jump ahead as far as possible. If this were jsut a friendly exibition game, I could see not running up the score...but when an olympic birth is at stake, you're not out there to be "friendly" to the opponent.

Also, who let in that 1 goal? who ever it is, is going to need to shore up their Defence before 2010 :P (Seanny B dropped that line earlier today)

I suppose sportsmanship would have been to stickhandle the puck away from the Bulgaria for 60 minutes. You play the game; trying not to score just pisses off the other team when they can't get the puck. Bulgaria never should have put a team together. Bulgaria never even got a shot! The IIHF should have a mercy rule on the books, but seeing as they don't, I don't think it's Slovakia's job to play down to the Bulgarian level.

Only thing I could think of regarding sportsmanship was that it was a pool play game where goal differential is commonly used as a tiebreaker in determining who makes it to the bracket round. And a couple other teams had already racked up 30-40 goals on Bulgaria, give it a little bit of padding in terms of other games in the pool, and if you wanted to be 'safe' about advancing, you probably didn't want to think about easing back a little until you hit 50 goals.

Slovakia's an IIHF Division 1 team with a real chance to advance to the Olympics. Bulgaria is a Division 5 team that should have never entered the tournament. Normally the IIHF is good about keeping the skill levels separate, if only to keep play relatively safe. Can't blame the Slovakian women for wanting to make sure they were looking good coming out of pool play in the tournament. It's their job to do everything they can to qualify for the Olympics.

Yeah sorry about that. To my defense though, it wasn't on the first page when I posted this :P (I did look)

Yes it was. Not trying to single you out, but it was there. But, the topic is now pinned, as this is the fourth time I've had to merge this topic. It must be important. So now everyone can see it.

My thoughts exactly.

Y'know another scenario?

Yer buddy: "Hey - Bulgaria and Slovakia are playing a ladies Oly qualifier tonight. I'll take Slovakia for $100, and spot you 80 goals OK?"

You: "Are you nuckin futs? YOU....ARE.....ON! 80 goal cushion? Make it a thousand bucks!"

I think it was an act of desperation by the mods, because for some reason people kept creating a new thread about it in spite of the existing thread(s) about the same topic clearly visible on the same page.

Bingo.

Unpinned. The point has been made. (I hope.) And the title changed so that people who quick-skim the page without really looking can still the big honking 82-0 they were looking for.

It's a goal every 44 seconds, definitely possible. I bet an NHL team would score around 350 goals on a pewee team if they actually tried.

Nah, and NHL team would never be that cruel to the little pee wees.

On the bright side, the game did give the Bulgarians to work on their face off skills! I want a picture of this team!

In terms of the "sportsmanship" or "running up the score" bit, it wouldn't be justifiable I think if the outcome is all but determined and you continually just play your 1st/2nd lines with scoring stars wanting to score more and more. But, if the other team is just flat out terrible, that isn't an excuse to work on your game and try to play any differently, whether you are on the 1st line or 4th line.

Perfect example, different sport. The school I went to is pretty solid in football, perhaps a top-25 team if they only lose a game or two this year. They played a I-AA school last weekend that wasn't that good and demolished them 67-7. They still scored a good bit in the 2nd half when the game was all but over, but with 2nd and 3rd stringers barely passing the ball and trying to get gaudy statistics or whatever. They just kept running the ball and the other team couldn't stop them. Not fair? Perhaps not, but what are you gonna do, just not run your offense or try not to score?

It takes less than a second to score a goal. Point is regardless of the score if I'm on the team that is dominating, I'm not going to just stop playing the game just to be "nice" to the other team. There comes a point in games like these to pull your main stars away from a game like this and to just end the game as soon as possible, but that doesn't mean I'm putting my 3rd and 4th stringers out there to not pass/shoot or to not run my normal offense/defense. You still have to play. If the defense is just that terrible, I'm not just going to accidentally not score or purposefully fall down to not score a touchdown.

Right but 67 points can be accomplished in football with less than 10 scores. We're talking about 82 scores...I mean, you have to play keep away for awhile, right?

I understand what you are saying, but if you aren't playing 100%, well, that's how people get hurt.

I'm not disagreeing with you at all. But it seems so mind boggling to give up 82 goals, I cant imagine what I'd do.

By the way, I doubt Bulgaria's womens hockey team could even skate well enough to hurt somebody. I mean, they had to be as bad as the Pee Wee team in South Park.
