Yzerman hints at career beyond Red Wings,

IMO, he may already be more capable of handling a GM role than a few GM's around the league (Vancouver for one example). You can't stop a great man from moving up. But yes, it's sad to think of him anywhere other than the Detroit Red Wings.

But just because he may leave someday, doe not mean that he won't return some other day.

Hopefully he doesn't think 3 seasons as the Wings VP makes him GM material. He's got to put more time in as an executive before he can reach the highest executive office on a team.

I certainly hope he isn't going to leave the Wings, but this isn't that big of a deal guys. He may be top 10 all time in scoring, but is he going to be top 10 all time in management? If the Wings have better managers ahead of him they won't push those guys aside to give Stevie the job just because he was a franchise player on this team.

Hence why we are sad about Stevie possibly leaving and not kenny.

Guest CaliWingsNut

Anyone else notice the caption on the photo next to this article??

"Red Wings captain Steve Yzerman holds the Stanley Cup aloft Saturday night in Joe Louis Arena in celebration of the Wings four game sweep over the Flyers in the NHL Finals."

I don't think that happened saturday.

Brett Hull has less management experience and he seems to be doing a decent job in Dallas...Yzerman will be a star GM when he gets the chance

How old are his daughters? That could be a good indication of if/when he might move.

Nah, they're pretty young. I think the oldest, Isabella is like 14 or 15. The other two are a fair bit younger.

I say let him go. Let's keep Kenny holland for another 15 years or so. Let Yzerman bounce around the league, have some success, and when holland is done, let's hire an experienced Stevie Y to To take over.

Let him go and get as much experience as possible. then when we're ready for him, sign him up

whether or not this is realistic or not remains to be seen, but i one hundred percent agree with the sentiment. obviously, you can't be a wings fan without loving stevie y, but overall, i'm very happy with holland as gm. yeah, bertuzzi trade, whatever. it's been discussed a million times--like any great anything, you're not really great unless you take some risks. whatever. i'm happy. at least he didn't trade a future hall-of-fame catcher away for more of the same s***ty relief pitching. *shrug*

at the same time, if the man still wants to move up in the game, let him do so--we owe him that much, at least. (if you love something, you've got to let it go -- the hoodies.) but i think it'd be brilliant if, say, holland retires, and 19 has done a bit of gm'ing around the league and wants to come back here for the last few years of his executive career...what a storybook ending. *shrug* we can keep dreaming. at this point, i'll agree that yzerman probably doesn't have enough executive "experience" to be a great gm, but i have a hard time seeing someone else being a better judge of talent and character. he's got the ability, i think, just needs to refine the skills.

Just like any career, regardless of if it is in professional sports or whatever else, if you are serious about advancing in your career sometimes the best chances for advancement might be outside of where you have lived or worked for a long time, or where you might want to first live or work. I'd love to see Yzerman be a Red Wing forever in his years in the front office, but realistically that might not be possible especially if he wants to run his own team. If or whenever the time may come for him to part ways with Detroit, I wish him no ill will, and hope he does well if he does in fact run his own team down the road.
