Outsider 42 Report post Posted October 2, 2008 Whats wrong with that? It shows how competitive he is, and how badly he wanted to make the playoffs. I suppose there's nothing wrong with it. Unless you're one of his teammates, that is. It kinda smacks of his days with the Islanders, and his sickening comments about what a "waste" it was for him to "kill (himself) making saves", when his Teammates weren't capable of winning, anyway. As a Canucks fan I have no problem with those comments at all, if anything it just re-affirms how badly he wants to win. And yet.... He doesn't. On any Team he's ever played on. Ever. Sure, he posts pretty stats. Just can't seem to Win. Of course, that has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that he's more interested in the Shut-Out than he is in the Win, and once the Shut-Out is broken, he grows less and less interested in the game. It's ONLY because he's never had a "good" Team in front of him. Right? Like that other poster, (a fellow Isles fan), on that other board said: "True colors..." Skiing - Puck 0 Report post Posted October 2, 2008 I guess I really don't see this as a huge deal. I know it is rare, but I remember a few goalies being an assistant and even a couple having been the captain at the collegiate level. Heck, Jeff Lerg at Michigan State was an assistant last season and is the captain this year.
Pavel Hossyukstrom 2 Report post Posted October 2, 2008 http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=251289 Just as they name him captain this happened in practice. Too funny!!
SweWings 45 Report post Posted October 2, 2008 Don't really see the problem with a goalie being the captain. Some of the best teamleaders in soccer have been goalies.
Wing Across The Pond 196 Report post Posted October 2, 2008 I'm a little confused by this? Is this just an unofficial thing as I know the rules say no goaltender can be appointed as captain or alternate captain? You recon its just something within the Vancouver setup? cusimano_brothers 1,655 Report post Posted September 9, 2010 From TSN : With expectations as high as they have ever been heading into the season, the Vancouver Canucks are looking to avoid any potential distractions that could derail their Cup hopes. For that reason, general manager Mike Gillis is set to meet with goaltender Roberto Luongo at some point next week to discuss whether the star goaltender will remain team captain or not.... edicius 3,269 Report post Posted September 9, 2010 Interesting. Given his comments in the past and clear lack of leadership skills, I think the Nucks should definitely go in a different direction when it comes to a team captain. How about Sammy?

F2B&G 15 Report post Posted September 9, 2010 (edited) "...I kept it under seven goals, so improvement was made..." That comment to the media after this year's series loss to Chicago basically sums up his worthiness to be captain. Pretty sure they aren't paying you the big bucks to keep it under 7 in the playoffs, Roberto. Edited September 9, 2010 by F2B&G

Booster313 138 Report post Posted September 9, 2010 I think Steve Yzerman should be the captain, he'd do a way better job than anyone on the team and they could just replay tapes of his interviews over the last 23years

That comment to the media after this year's series loss to Chicago basically sums up his worthiness to be captain. Pretty sure they aren't paying you the big bucks to keep it under 7 in the playoffs, Roberto. Comments like those are exactly what I was thinking too. It's one thing to find the silver lining in a bad situation, but it's completely different to make a comment like that, either in jest or seriously, particularly if you're a team captain. A real captain would have honestly thrown himself under the bus (if it didn't zoom through his gaping five hole, zing!) and said something like, "I let the team down. You're not going to win many games giving up that many goals. There's no excuse, I have to stop those shots. It's something on which I'll really have to reflect and focus during the offseason." I'm not saying he should say he feels like hanging himself or something, but be honest about your performance and your role in your team's elimination. I don't think that he was seriously saying that 'it got better, so that's good'. He made a wry, self-deprecating comment because he clearly knows that he played badly in the last two playoffs he has been in. That said, he shouldn't be captain. cjm502 165 Report post Posted September 9, 2010 I havent liked the guy since he entered the league, and I have never liked the idea of a goalie being captain. The best goalie captain ever would have to be Jeff Lerg, and thats just because he is a total badass.
