Leino and Ericsson sent to Grand Rapids

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

Mike Babcock raved about Leino's skill, and there's no question he'll be with the Wings sooner or later this season.

"This is the best player I’ve been involved in sending to the minors, I can tell you that," Babcock said. "He’s got a nose for the net, goes to the net, dominant on the cycle, makes great passes. He’s a Red Wings type player. Leino, I think he's going to be a scoring machine."

WOW, wasn't a week or so ago Babs was saying Leino would be down until he learned to use his body and go to the net, my how quickly this kid learns, no wonder he is Wings material!!

Also, this clears up a much needed roster spot for Downey after he clears waivers.

Downey > Leino, McCarty, Ericsson combined as far as the 2008 Detroit Red Wings TEAM is concerned.

 Well aside from being wrong about Leino and Ericsson, you certainly are right about McCarty.

It's a good thing real GM's wouldn't be caught dead saying a throwaway 1-dimensional fighter is more valuable than their best prospect and their most impressive new scoring prospect.

Downey's an important member of this team, but don't think for a second he matters that much to the 2008 Detroit Red Wings TEAM. There's a reason why he can clear waivers time in and time out. Fighters aren't in short supply. Downey's a great team player and an important locker room presense but he's still an interchangeable part.

This actually makes me worried and happy at same time. Whats the deal with his playing rights? Could he go back to Europe, only to comeback to play for some other NHL team?

My question is this: They pulled Quincey off the ice this morning because of the possibility of a trade. If he gets traded who gets called up? Leino or Ericsson?

Mule-Z-Huds

Sammy-Flip-Cleary

Kopk-Draps-Maltby

See that's what the intelligent people on this board understand... you know- that the effing brass praising the hell out of this kid is their way of telling him he's still in their plans and he needs to be patient- that they want him to keep playing for a spot because there's one there waiting for him.

And hey- I'm not saying this is a bad move- we all knew Big Rig and Tonight Show were going to GR until the roster gets solved. But that doesn't change that they're extremely important to this organization and this move is a temporary thing that'll sort itself out in the next 12 months. Both these kids will be Red Wings before 2010.

I think everyone needs to calm down, the reason they sent helm and vieno down is because it will stall their growth as players if they sit in the press box every night, (as downey or mac will), or even by getting 5 minutes a game like maltby and kopecky will, when a spot on the top three lines open up, then you will see these guys called up. maltby is a long time wings and kopecky is hossa's buddy, it would be foolish to cut these guys for slightly better players who we'd just end up under utilizing.

yes guys who are injured cant be sent down, but if they are placed on long-term IR they dont count agianst the cap or take a roster spot, where chelios will start the season, giving us another roster spot, which we may not use to start the season to build up some emergency space if they need to call up a goalie or someone in a pinch. But if they do choose to go with a full roster

And howard might qualify for long term IR, and even if he doesn't his cap hit is very small since its prorated from the time he spent of the team next year which was not a long time, so he doesnt really affect the teams plans.

so my best guess is the same top 20 as you but they only go with 22 players, and

scratchs: Meech, Mac

IR

howard, chelios

Leino is 25 and is more or less ready. A month or two in GR and he'll be back up for good.

Babs is mad about big rig as well, does he want him up for a while to? Think Ericsson will

spend the majority of the year in GR with the odd call up here and there. Helm will think

he has been hard done by after his stella play last year. He is the unluckiest of them all due mainly to the numbers game. The thing is, could Leino do a similar job on the 4th line as Rex did the year before last?

I have a funny feeling that the guy who could drop down the pecking order this year may be Holmstrom. For me Franzen is over taking him for the #1 line spot. Could he end up on his old 4th line spot by the end of the year? Could Leino cope with 2nd line mins and put up the #'s to keep it? We are so stacked it is unreal, we'll be having line discussion's all year long. Its great to be a Wings fan right now!!

Just a slight interesting topic. Which of the Wings bottom 6 forwards haven't got a no trade clause in their contracts?

A good question, could someone who knows please answer?

We might not have the time to keep him waiting the amount of time people say (quote from another thread) :

If the Wings play their cards right, Helm and Leino will move smoothly into 2 of these positions over the next several years.

Besides,he's as ready as a rookie can be.

One year of seasoning for Leino and he'll be good enough to be in a top 6 role next season. It'll be interesting to see at the end of the season what the decisions made on Hudler and Samuelsson are. The big money is going to Zetteberg, Hossa and Franzen, and then the secondary players become important, at least we have alot to look forward to before the season starts this year and next!

Nope he can't come back and play for another team unless the Wings don't offer him a qualifying offer in the offseason. He is a RFA in the NHL next year (Look at the Salary Chart).

Hossa won't be back. Chances are Samuelsson won't be back either because Franzen, Zetterberg and Hudler are going to demand pretty hefty salary increases. Leino will need to be re-signed too. I'm sorry but as much as we would all like Hossa to stay, and in a perfect world he would, he is merely a rental, a perfect one at that because it cost us nothing but $ to sign him.

I'm a tad disappointed Leino has been sent down but man those are some massive compliments from Babcock. Injuries happen, and as soon as one of our scorers suffers an injury he will be the first to be called up. He hasn't put a foot wrong in the pre-season, scoring 6 points in 8 games, and taken advice from Babcock on board. He'll be back sooner rather than later. As for Ericsson, was always going to be sent down, no disappointment on that one despite how good he obviously is.

It's quite staggering how much depth we have, we are loaded!

I think the quote from Babcock sums up how deep this team is.

These are the best players I've ever been involved with sending to the minors ever, I can tell you that
