Yzermaynard 1 Report post Posted November 1, 2008 The very first time I saw this commercial I thought it was cool... it was a fresh idea, and was funny to watch. Then I saw it again, and again... in fact every game I've watched the past few weeks has had this freaking commercial in it, in at least every other commercial break... Now I understand that it's advertising the Center Ice Package and it currently being run during the free preview, so that I can overlook. But what watching it a thousand times has brought to my attention is the fact that it is totally disrespectful to the Current Champions of the Sport it is advertising (at least in my opinion)... The guy is not only a die hard Penguins fan but the clips they show him watching, give the impression that the Penguins totally dominated the Wings. Practically all the plays they show are "pro Penguins" including many hits and even a goal... Look, I don't mind the guy in the spot being portrayed as a Penguins fan, I'm a die hard (Wings) fan myself and the sport needs more of them, for every team, but at least show a decently accurate representation of the series the guy's supposedly watching... I get the feeling that even if we DO repeat nothing is going to change. Personally, I have been building a level of respect for the Penguins, and Crosby, but this kind of crap makes me hope they don't make the playoffs again until they stop trampling all over the rest of the league to fight over who gets to fondle sid's ego next. As I've said before this may just be my opinion. Here is the link... you decide:

Seraph 240 Report post Posted November 1, 2008 It's kind of dumb for them to consider that a casual fan will want to get center ice because of Crosby and the Pens. I would think Center Ice would be marketed to more of a non mainstream hockey fan who lives out of town and wants to keep up with their team. So yeah, you're right. I think the advertisement sucks both as an advertisement and for the fact that it's shamelessly promoting the series inaccurately.

Barrie 900 Report post Posted November 1, 2008 Yzermaynard I've seen that commercial many times. Everytime I see it I either think or say, 1) "Umm the Wings beat the Penguins last year", or 2) "Stupid commercial" But I agree with CrossoverThrash, it's mostly just making Pittsburgh fans look like retards. Doc Holiday 0 Report post Posted November 1, 2008 I don't find this terrible really. If it was a Sharks fan I would expect them to show clips of Sharks scoring and such. I think it is just the fact that we won and we aren't being glorified that seems to upset a few of you, imo.
CrossoverThrash 0 Report post Posted November 1, 2008 The fact there showing a retarded pens fan dosent upset me, i find it humorous, but the fact they played it religously and still do on NHLN pisses me off, i hate all commercials that interfere with my hockey watching experience. Isn't that what all the "The Cup Changes Everything" advertisements were all talking about? If some other team gets to share the glory of our win... what makes winning so special? The bigger point is why did they have to bastardize OUR games, why did they have to paint Crosby's face on our Mona Lisa? Why not some other game, against some other team... maybe a team the Penguins could actually dominate... why are we ok with misrepresentation of history? esteef 2,679 Report post Posted November 1, 2008 Agree! I hate that commercial! If it were the Yankees winning the World Series you wouldn't see s*** until October that wasn't pro-yankees. Blatant marketing of the media darling if there ever was one! Sidney's f***in' face at all costs!!!!! esteef
Hockeytown Red Wings 245 Report post Posted November 1, 2008 No kidding. If you watch the commercial you'd think the Pens swept the Wings in 4. It's ridiculous....and if you're gonna have something like that, at least have one for us too. f*** the NHL and their love of Cindy, it makes me sick. I understand it's part of marketing, but packaging something that makes the champions look bad? WTF?

Jocu 0 Report post Posted November 1, 2008 My "alternate ending" to the commercial would be him walking out of his house. Wideshot of his house inbetween two Wings fan houses. M. NIGHT SHYAMALAN TWIST: HE'S LIVING IN MICHIGAN. Cut to the two neighboors mowing their lawns or taking out the trash (Wearing Cup Championship shirts or Wings jerseys), making fun of him and the Pens. betterREDthandead 58 Report post Posted November 1, 2008 I don't like the commercial (in fact I was saying to my dad the other day that they ought to change it around since Wings fans are probably a huge part of the Center Ice market.) HOWEVA - it is A MILLION JILLION BAZILLION times better than those Puckheads commercials they showed last year. Besides, let's get real. Anyone who would fork out the $$$ for Center Ice knows what happened in the series. Especially Pens fans, who have to look and realize how empty the guy's celebrations are. SouthernWingsFan 854 Report post Posted November 1, 2008 So the NHL Center Ice commercial focuses on the Penguins team. Big whoop. Not everybody has to be stroking the Red Wings ego all the time. And I find it hard to believe that showing recap coverage of the Penguins and Wings in this context to be extremely disrespectful. You know the Wings are good, I know the Wings are good, I'm content in leaving it at that. Crosby/Pittsburgh is one of the main NHL marketing focuses right now, whether it is right or not. It's not that bad to deal with. They got a commercial, we got a Cup. I'll take a Cup over a commercial any day of the week.
A.T.Hun 0 Report post Posted November 1, 2008 Why do so many guys on this board have security issues when it comes to the Pens? Between this and the constant harping on Crosby you tend to sound like a bunch of insecure high-school debutantes. The Wings won the Cup. We've got the banner to prove it. We've even got Hossa. Deep breaths. If the commercial troubles you so much, change the channel like I do every time a political ad comes on.

b.shanafan14 733 Report post Posted November 1, 2008 (edited) I brought this same ad up in the thread about Semin's thoughts on Crosby. http://www.letsgowings.com/forums/index.ph...t&p=1473605 This commercial once again highlights the Pittsburgh Crosbys, where have we seen that before outside of every. single. effin. commercial. In this case its sad because its ignoring a team in the Wings that is stacked with superstars, probably has the most wide-spread fanbase of hardcore fans (you know, the kind that would fork out the $180 to get Center Ice), and sticking with the ol' standby: show the Pens dominating and "Crosby" and "87" about 30 times in as many seconds. From this commercial, tell me who the NHL wanted to win the Stanley Cup last year? Please NHL, next time show a Habs fan in Florida or a Stars fan in Winnipeg or a damn Panthers fan in Alaska for all I care. Just don't be so transparent in mixing your two favorite things, Crosby and California. Edited November 1, 2008 by b.shanafan14

stlwing14 0 Report post Posted November 2, 2008 1. The Red Wings can win ten Cups in a row and the League still would put forth the Pens, Sharks, Capitals, anyone, before the Wings, even though they are the most dominant and popular team in the US and are known worldwide. 2. Pens have a bad commercial; we have Lord Stanley. 3. It all makes me wish for the finals to be a repeat of the Wings and Pens and this time we sweep them. 4. As long as the Red Wings continue to dominate the better part of two decades, the hatred will only grow. Some teams actually try to craft systems and bring about success such as Ottawa, Buffalo, etc while many will just yell "Wings suck" (like the Blues) as they wallow in the lower depths of the standings. If such annoyance is a small price for victory, so be it.
