Strachan: Detroit may lose team

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

That's like saying, "The New York Rangers will lose their team because more banks on Wall Street may close."

I know NY is diversified, however, doesn't a large portion of the world economy revolve around Wall Street?

People often forget GM has most of their business and sales overseas. They have been relying on that for quite sometime. Weather it gets them though this is another discussion.

Perhaps these people with their quotes should talk about something else, only 6 Canadian teams in the NHL.

Detroit will persevere!

of corse not ima diehard wings fan, but now ur just twisting my words, cuz mickey n ken are not commentators for cbc or tsn or etc etc... there commentators for the wings so obvioulsy there gonna mainly talk bout our wings, but ron maclean is always tryna put detroit down hes a big leafs fan thats ok but that doesnt mean you always put the wings down esp. when there the defending champs etc

I've never really noticed the Red Wing hate. When I do sense some I usually take it with a grain of salt, which is what I took Strachan's dumb comment with. I watch CBC a fair bit though I'm sure not as much as others. I actually enjoy watching McLean, Cherry, PJ and Hrudey.

These are all generalizations. SOME American cars are better or equal in quality to SOME Asia cars. Detroit still makes come garbage cars (Chryslers are the worst) and the Asians make some crap too (stay away from Suzukis) but if you average everything out, more Asian cars are btter than American nameplates. Check out Consumers Reports.

True they are generalizations but they are based on facts.

Retiree overhead has been the majority of GM's red. Enough that they negotiated with the UAW to alleviate some of the costs from GM.

SUV, trucks, and minivans (forgot about minivans) were the bread and butter for Detroitauto until the gas spike.

Cutting cost was my injection because instead of consolidating or sharing among divisions each division did it's own thing too much. (Did we really need 5/6 different versions of the Trailblazer in the same model year?)

Now since we're continuing with the generalizations: outside of the higher end cars (full size or sports) the big three have been a day late and a dollar short on cars. Hopefully the new Malibu will change that but I doubt it. It's not GM's style.

He may have had some typos, but what in his message implied he was a McCain supporter? That kind of division is exactly what this country does NOT need right now.

And for the record before you label me, I didn't vote for Mccain

He implied that there was some misrepresentation of fact, thus, I must be an Obama supporter. I think that is a pretty clear indictment.

Beside the point though. My original post was correct, Strachan said what he said and I have seen a few posts reiterating it.

What they are saying is that if GM closes, a lot of people will lose their jobs, therefore they can't come to the games, therefore there will be more empty seats in the JLA, therefore the Ilitch family has to take it to another place where people can afford to the games.

So guys, when you are looking for your next car, buy American! :colorbounce:

I am tired of hearing people say this. Build a better product that retains as much resale value as a foreign car and I will buy American.

There are too many problems with the way the big three have conducted themselves the last 10 years. I don't owe them anything, least of all my buisness.

I hear ya there, but all I ask is you consider them next time you look to buy a car. Detroit will never lose its stigma unless you give them a chance. Their advances in quality are proof that they want the American car buyer back, so all we need now is to have the American car buyer's perception improve of Detroit's 3.

I have never driven anything other than a Ford all my life, and I've never, not once, had a bad car. I currently drive an Edge and absolutely love it, although the name has set up several jokes (driving over the Edge, blah blah blah). It would take a LOT to convince me to buy other than American.

That's because the Edge is a foreign built car. Oakville, Canada. :)

Which does not help Detroit since the wages our going into Canadian pockets who will spend it in their local Canadian neighborhoods instead of Detroit pockets which would have been spent in the local Detroit neighborhoods including the Red Wings.

Michigan's economy is totally out of Granholm's hands. The auto industry has been heading for a nosedive since the days of Engler, and the only people who should've taken note and tried to fix a few things are the guys whose companies are going in the s***ter right now.

Any smart businessman has been aware of the American atuo industries troubles for a long time, and as such, no company is going to invest in a city or state whose entire economy is precariously resting on the future of the auto industry.

Totally out of Granholm's hands? She's the governor for christ's sake! If she isnt the figure head that is suppossed to have the insight to foresee our State's future....then who is? Her tax structure is the exact opposite of what our state has needed to prevail. It discourages business development as well as consumer spending. Her startegy has been proven time and time again to fail. It just seems that the people in our country have a memory span the size of a goldfish so we like to forget those things every once in awhile. Go buy a history book when it comes time to vote again so you wot forget.

Disagree with me?

I just had a one on one conversation with Tom Ogden, the President of Comerica bank. Take it up with him....he knows first hand how our State's administration deters from businesses succeeding and therefore our State succeeding. He does business in Cali Texas and Florida as well so he knows a good state from a bad one.

Lastly, many "American" cars are loaded with Chinese made parts. In fact the Detroit 3 have goals to use more imported parts because they are cheaper so before we fall for the "Buy American" slogans, make sure you understand that those "American" companies are hypocritical.

I'd rather by a high quality Honda car made in Ohio that is made by American workers and made with 50% American parts than a piece of crap Chrysler made in Michigan that is also made with only 50% American parts.

100%....

All your central nervous systems of your US BIG THREE cars... (i.e. wire harness) are built via outsourced (LOSS OF US JOBS) overseas...

Buying American is as dumb a slogan as you can find.

Other countries have a degree of isolationism that we could afford to adopt a little of. Canada has a Canadian Content Law, things like that. We could also tell the countries we import from that the trade imbalance needs to be made a little more in our favor.

True that the American cars are coming around in terms of quality. NOW, we have to work on the SERVICE issues. I own a Toyota and have NEVER gotten such attention and care when I have to have it serviced. They fixed things FOR FREE because they wore out early.

I didn't have to file a lawsuit or go to another dealership and get another estimate, none of that crap. The customer service aspect is what drove me away from American cars and into a Toyota. Not a problem with it ever. (Knocking on a hockey stick, the wood kind).

Strachan was just talkin out of his arse... some here should realize the real folks in the D are thicker-skinned and not easily phased by such nonsense. sure the area and the Big-3 are hurting... what else is new? we've been getting bashed for years, decades even. but what does any of that have to do with hockey??

what if Tim Hortons goes under... does Canada lose all their teams? nonsense.

Now if Little Ceasars goes under then we might be talking something different... but even without cars, people can still walk to the nearest pizza joint and support the wings owner... life is grand.

not to mention every pizza sold at the Joe is equal to 4 $5 pizzas in the real world. Wings aren't going anywhere.
