YoungGuns1340 1 Report post Posted November 12, 2008 "Sad, isn't it?" Spare me. NHL players are human. As HUMANS, we are subject to constant criticism. Its a fact of life. Hockey players are no different. Most people get more flack from their own mothers than hockey players do from their fans. This "oh poor hockey players" bit is as trite as baseless bashing itself. lets go pavel 2 Report post Posted November 13, 2008 The thing you have to realize is that this forum is made up of a wide variety of people, and that each expresses him/herself differently and each has his/her own attitude. You can kind of put people into groups. Let's call the first group the apples. They notice things and comment on them. They might notice when a certain player makes a mistake, or if someone showed less effort than the situation called for. Most of the time they have good, interesting insight, but there are a few bad apples around. The next group is the oranges. They also watch and comment. They eventually focus on a specific player who they feel is not performing up to par. Each section has its own player, and often there is a seed of truth in with the pulp. The bananas come out after losses or close games. They are not commenting like the apples and oranges, they are just going bananas. They are the "oh, no! We suck! The sky is falling!" types. Often someone wishes the bananas would just split, and they post a comment telling them to settle down. This cuts the apples to the core. They feel that this is aimed at them, and point out that this is a place for talking about hockey. They are right, of couse. It is. The oranges also take offense and find a new zest for their cause. They bash their hated player even more, until the seed of truth is all but lost in the juice. So to mentally navigate this site, don't compare apples to oranges, and come to terms with the fact that some people are just plain bananas. The bad part of all this is that the bananas don't see themselves as bananas; the apples and oranges see themselves in comments aimed at the bananas and take offense where none is intended. So when will the bashing end? When we win decisively. When no mistakes are made. And even then it will end only for the moment. Once a mistake is made the bananas will come out again. Until then, the apples and oranges will discuss, and the players will play. We will comment, cheer, and share news with one another. And life will go on. perhaps a little fruity, but nicely put! I'm all for criticism but it really isn't all that difficult to control yourself emotionally in terms of preventing yourself from pushing the panic button or jumping off the cliff predicting doom and gloom. Posts like that are unnecessary, and posting and emotion rarely mix well, if ever. Edited November 13, 2008 by SouthernWingsFan
Konnan511 1,736 Report post Posted November 13, 2008 (edited) Ehh it's an internet forum composed of 13 year olds and 60 years olds and everyone in between. You're going to see many emotionally immature teenagers posting on here and you're going to see a few old people on here not know what's going on. The only times I ever get weary is when someone says something completely and totally ridiculous. If they question someones' skill I don't mind, if they saw someone isn't giving full effort let them. All it takes is for someone to post something out of idiocy and have at least one person agree with them, after that they are stuck being idiots because someone agreed with them. If people want to say Cleary doesn't have the offensive skills to match his paycheck let them. If they want to say Filppula is expendable, let them. Hell, if they want to say bench Lidstrom until he gets his "act" together let them. If everyone had the same temperaments, talents, and convictions, this place would be boring as hell. AtomicPunk 296 Report post Posted November 13, 2008 It's just venting....you have to vent sometimes, and this audience understands your frustration. Your wife gets mad at you and doesn't understand why you have to break the remote when your team loses in overtime.

Your wife gets mad at you and doesn't understand why you have to break the remote when your team loses in overtime. Well put! I imagine that the bashing will stop around the time that our bosses stop bashing us when we don't put in a full day of effort - at a fraction of the pay. If I'm paying big buck ticket prices to players pulling in millions each year, then is it too much to ask for 60 minutes of effort?
OsGOD 3 Report post Posted November 13, 2008 It'll probably never end. Too many ungrateful "fans". (unless we win 82 games 6-0, the bitching won't stop - but I'm sure "fans" will find things to ***** about, like "OMG! We only won 6-0, we should win 10-0!!!! blah-blah-blah") I can think of about 30 other NHL teams that wish they had the problems that the Detroit Red Wings have. well of course they won't stop there... because that only gets us out of the "pre-season" they still have to go 16 and 0! But then they will ***** about the height that the captain raised the cup up over his head... OMG was it high enough??? who knows?!
BlakChamber 8 Report post Posted November 13, 2008 It will end just as soon as the players meet the unrealistically high expectations people put on them. Easy as that.

haroldsnepsts 4,826 Report post Posted November 13, 2008 In terms of this forum, I have no problem criticizing players, especially when they're playing poorly. The hyperbole just gets a little old here. Everyone sucks. Or they're the worst player ever. I understand being pissed right when a goal is scored against the Wings or right after they lose, but it'd be nice if people talked more about what they thought was going wrong, what mistakes they players are making. To actually talk hockey instead of just whining.

This is a major reason why it is hard to read some posts after a loss or a bad stretch of games or to take such threads like scapegoat or LGW Whipping Boy of the Week threads seriously.
