Burke out as Ducks' GM

Clearly....but I wouldn't be the least bit surprised given all the rumors surrounding Burke this past year. I'd be very willing to bet the powers above knew what was likely coming as the season unfolded had Burke remained in power.

Latest is that Burke turned down the Ducks final offer on Nov. 1st and at that point, the Ducks & Burke began to put together a plan for his departure, which apparently is going into effect today.

Latest? Got any link confirming that?

Besides, if Burke's intentions were honorable I'm sure the Ducks would've wanted him to ride out the season. Keep in mind, according to most media he's a great GM. Why wouldn't you want that around?

There's a reason for it if you ask me.

Darren Dreger reported that on the radio.

Everybody in the hockey world knows that Burke was forced to stay in Anaheim. He was telling anybody that would listen behind the scenes last year that he was going to leave Anaheim because of his family situation.

When it all seemed to be coming together, with Anaheim management saying that they would let him leave if he wanted to, Bettman made the decree that he was tired of executives leaving one team for another in mid-contract.

All of the sudden, Anaheim says they won't let him leave and won't let the Leafs talk to him (when the Leafs asked permission in late May/early June).

I would say he won't become the Leafs GM until May or June 2009.

Doesn't change the fact that his intentions probably wouldn't have been honorable had he stayed. Especially if he did want out, what kind of GM would you expect with that mindset? Probably one that would've traded for Sundin at the deadline to "help" out Anaheim.

According to the Toronto Star:

The Star’s Damien Cox reports that Burke will stay on as a consultant with the Ducks until the end of this season.

and from TSN

Sources say Burke will, in this advisory capacity, have the ability to freely negotiate future employment opportunities as a GM in the NHL.

That would pave the way for Burke to be hired as president and GM of the Toronto Maple Leafs in the days, weeks or months ahead, if the Leafs and Burke so desire. And there is strong reason to believe that is precisely what will happen.

Not to spoil everyone's fun, but this doesn't sound like getting fired. It sounds like the Ducks removed him as GM and put him in a "senior advisory capacity" so he could legally negotiate with other teams.

Sources tell TSN Burke will remain in a senior advisory capacity with the Ducks for now but that the final word on any hockey operations decisions in Anaheim will be made by Murray. Sources say Burke will, in this advisory capacity, have the ability to freely negotiate future employment opportunities as a GM in the NHL.

wow awesome... can't wait for him to join the Leafs and assemble them into one of the toughest teams in the league like the good old days with guys like Domi, Corson, Marchment, Tucker, Perrott, should be fun to watch

If he does become GM there, he will definitely not have the same ability to make decisions he had in Anaheim. The Leafs have too many chiefs. No rhyme intended.

Mildly related, from Darren Dreger:

However today's announcement undoubtedly changes that and, with other names like San Jose's Doug Wilson, Detroit's Ken Holland and Nashville's David Poile still being tossed around as potential candidates at the end of the season [for Leaf's GM], Burke's hiring in Toronto may depend on his expectations, both financially, as well as the autonomy he is sure to demand.

Audible sigh @ bold. Besides the fact that the man has been with the organization forever, just won a Cup, and is still signed through 2011, I guess Darren has a good case. Tsk tsk at these silly rumors being promoted by the authority.

this sucks. I mean, sure I do love him being kicked in the ass but I hoped to see him continue with

Goons and bring then even more down. because the "best GM in the NHL" is brutal after he sells

most of the young assets of his team and Goons already reached the level when Brian Murray's

picks are gone and they're left only with Burke's era draft decision which are... not exactly

spectacular. Burke now had little good prospects to sell, huge salaries commited in small number

of players and some money burned in bought-out contracts. and the Goons future seems anything

but bright for me right now.

what we now see the same "Brian jumps off the sinking boat" we had with Canucks before.

and it will likely take the new guy a couple of years to clean this mess.

if the rumours of Burke going to Toronto are true I already feel bad for their fans. looks like there

will be even less ppl in Ontario who ever saw Leafs raising the cup. I hope I'm wrong because

the team finally is looking fine and seems to have shaken off gloomy Quinn era

You mean how Burke got rid of Ryan, Perry, Getzlaf, Kunitz? Those young assets?

Andy McDonald was what, 30 years old when Burke traded him, which he had to do because Niedermayer had him by the short n' curly's. That's hardly selling off a young asset.

There was Lupul and Smid, but they landed Chris Pronger and eventually, the Stanley Cup....and isn't that the idea? I hardly see how Lupul & Smid are "most" of the young assets. Plus, he re-couped some with the compensation for Penner.

The Ducks still have guys like Mitera, Mikkelson, Tangradi, MacMillan in their system. Not top tier guys but decent prospects.

Plus, Burke has left Bob Murray with a HUGE amount of cap flexibility next year. Perhaps as much as $20 million to spend.
