egroen 384 Report post Posted December 3, 2008 I remember reading that Claude Lemiuex would have been the oldest player to ever play in the AHL, so....
pjgj13 30 Report post Posted December 3, 2008 So, who do we send down when Chelli returns? Meech? Kopecky? I say send them down (or trade) and bring in Helm.
MacK_Attack 108 Report post Posted December 3, 2008 Does anyone know if this would make him the oldest guy to play in the AHL? In the AHL, yes. Gordie Howe is the oldest to play in the minors.
The Mule 0 Report post Posted December 3, 2008 I don't know if I'm alone on this or not, but I can't wait to have Cheli back in the lineup.
mjlegend 155 Report post Posted December 3, 2008 I don't think we NEED him, but he is a good asset to have if our better defencemen go down for long periods of time. I'm sure this team can draft another Derek Meech if need be. Shame, because I liked Meech as a junior but this is a cap world and he's simply run out of time with this organization. Nev 1,085 Report post Posted December 3, 2008 Interesting - I was actually wondering yesterday if he was eligable for a conditioning assingment. Question is, will he play? Lilja has been playing excellent (for him) and Lebda has been much better since his benching. Aaaand we're also back up against the cap

Oh the Wings do NEED him. He's a symbol of the long ago Wings who were the masters of team defense (cast your mind back to 7 months ago )... and I have a feeling he'll be a steading influence on the locker room. I have no doubt that Cheli's been sitting around stewing about the defensive melt-downs we've been seeing for 24 games- and you all know how he feels about that. Give him some time to jump out there and kill some penalties (he's still awesome at it). 6 months from now, I'll agree that we don't need him anymore

He's been a very, very good 3rd pairing guy so far this year.

55fan 5,133 Report post Posted December 3, 2008 Please help as I'm confused. If he's on a conditioning assignment, does he still count towards the cap? I know he (and other 35+ players) do if they're just sent down, but does that count for conditioning too? Also, is there a limit on the length of conditioning assignments? Sorry for my ignorance. I'm fiscally challenged.

I'm fiscally challenged. I believe that I read he can get sent down for a maximum of two weeks. Ken Holland said in the article that he will be activated from injured reserve before Dec. 10 against Calgary so I am guessing that means he doesn't count against the cap. Guest CaliWingsNut Report post Posted December 4, 2008 McCarty counts against the cap in GR or detroit (due to age), as does Chelios (obviously). Only reasons to move McCarty are health/conditioning and roster space.
rwfan007 18 Report post Posted December 6, 2008 he sure didn't like wearing that visor. he had it way up on his forehead lol. he played A LOT. he ended up with an assist and 2 PIM in an overtime losing effort. He played decently, more of a positional game than anything else (but at his age and just getting back from injury, it was ok)

Only reasons to move McCarty are health/conditioning and roster space. The age rule only applies to players who signed after 35 year of age IF they signed a multi-year deal and only after the first season of the contract. Cheli and Mac are on one year deals.
