Osgood avoids IR, might play Saturday

Update from Tuesday's practice: Wings goaltender Chris Osgood said his strained groin felt much better after today's morning skate, so he will not need to go on the long-term injured reserve list.

"I should be ready to go after Christmas,'' Osgood said. "Two more days (of rest), that'll make it 10 days (since his last game), that'll be perfect. It was just tight but I want it to be 100 percent so I know I won't hurt it again for the rest of the year.''

He'll back up Ty Conklin tonight against the Blues and Friday in Nashville and said he might be able to start Saturday in Colorado.

Very few people have pointed to this as an excuse. Most people on this board won't hesitate to bash Osgood for his poor play this season. And I know that Ozzie himself hasn't used it as an excuse.

Conklin has been playing quite well and I hope they ride him while he is playing well. Ride the better goalie and right now Conklin is the better goalie. IMO, neither is a great goalie and the coaches have to figure out how to get the best games out of both of them. Nogood has proven to play better when having to compete for playing time and that is what i would like to see happen for the rest of the season. no definative #1 title but the better goalie see's the ice time.

And why do people on here keep hoping to see Howard come up? I don't get it! He is sucking in the minor league why would he magically do better in the big league where the game is bigger, stronger and faster? He has not lived up to what they expected and i would highly doubt he ever has a permanent spot on the team especially with the better young talent chasing him. I'm predicting we will see Larsson in as a regular before Howard.

Same reason people thought Lebda was a better defenseman than Kyle Quincey. Larsson has had a much better season than Howard thus far, and Im sure Howard can read the writing on the wall, with Larsson's appearance plus the drafting of the McCollum <sp?> kid with the 1st rounder.

Anyone else think that this is just a ploy to at least dress for the Winter Classic? I don't think he should play, Conklin is the better goalie right now, he should get the nod. But do you think Ozzie just wants to be a part of it bad enough that he'd say he feels better than he does?

I think unless Ozzie plays out of his mind on Saturday or Conklin has a meltdown this week, you have to go with Conks in the winter classic...not to mention to risk of reinjuring the groin in the cold weather.

I'm a huge fan of Ozzie, and am glad to hear that he won't have to go on IR. At this point as far as the Winter Classic I'd put Conklin in the net over Ozzie, Conklin has played great lately and is on a roll, might s well ride hime while he's hot.
