going_top_shelf 6 Report post Posted December 27, 2008 It seems like everyone who is not a Red Wings fan HATES the Wings. For instance, I was recently watching the Wings 08 cup DVD and it seemed like everyone except Doc Emrick had nothing good to say about the Wings. I've never heard anyone say something like "I HATE THE SHARKS!" So what's with the leaguewide Wings-hate?

Rivalred 630 Report post Posted December 27, 2008 (edited) I really do not hate any team in the NHL. I do not like playing against some as they are good teams and have done damage to the Wings. Some cases I do know the Wings have been called the Yankee's of Hockey and a lot of teams dislike the Yank's. Go Figure. thedisappearer 291 Report post Posted December 27, 2008 I'd say it's 75% jealousy, 20% sore loser, and 5% of us Wing fans being too uptight about it.

Prior to the cap, this was a ding on the Wings and the cap was supposed to end Detroit's reign in the league. Unlike the Yanks, we develop our own talent a lot better. Guest Shoreline Report post Posted December 27, 2008 (edited) Remember the Bulls? Remember all the fans they had? Remember all the haters they had? Success. How about the Patriots? Yankees? Cowboys? 49ers? There's a trend of fans to hate successful teams, especially if they see a sudden influx of fans of such teams in their local market -- and let's face it, the Wings have a lot of bandwagoners who weren't a Wings fan until they won their cups. Plus, there are teams that simply get tired of being beat down by the Wings. Like Blues fans. Their team has been the punching bag for this one for years. Reminds me of bitter Red Sox fans before the Sox had their comeback. Edited December 27, 2008 by Shoreline

Flyers fans care way less about the Wings than about the Rangers or Devils. For some reason Wings fans seem to see anti-Wings bias in every kind word spoken about another team. Yeah, I am tired of hearing how Crosby is the league's coverboy because the league hates Detroit and Dats and Z.
TheSupafly 50 Report post Posted December 27, 2008 When your team is on top for so long, it's natural to have everyone developing animosity towards your team. A lot is jealousy, but a lot is also the fact that when a team is on top, they're going to get a LOT of media coverage and attention. Other teams' fans get sick of hearing about Wings things and Wings that. No one is to blame, that's just the way things work. Other teams' fans are forced to hear and see lots of coverage on the Wings, and very little about their own team. That accounts for a lot of the bitterness. Maybe to an extent, but the media tends to dislike Detroit pretty strongly, as evidenced by last year's playoff coverage.
skacore 2 Report post Posted December 27, 2008 from my personal experience all my buddies around here hate the Wings cause they play a European style game that is all about systems and discipline, and the team is made up of mostly Europeans. Whereas we grew up watching rugged, North American style hockey with lots of passion

Their genitals are small and ineffectual, they are dumber than ditch-carp, their sisters are syphillitic whores, their brothers give b.j.s for food stamps, their mothers are burka-clad terrorists, and they all need to DIE! That's about it.
SouthernWingsFan 854 Report post Posted December 28, 2008 (edited) Consistent success and a fan base that acts spoiled, generally speaking, makes it an easy fan base to hate. EDIT: I know all Wings fans aren't like this, but the attitude certainly isn't new. Me personally, and this goes for any of my favorite teams, I don't really hate any other team in the NHL or NFL or colleges and such. I know that hating other teams and all that stuff can be fun and I don't mind good-natured ribbing as long as it is done in fun and not taken seriously, but I've seen so many instances where fans take this stuff so overboard that it makes them sound ridiculous, which is why I don't like to passionately hate another team and such. You like who you like and that doesn't make you any better or worse of a fan/person than me or anybody else. Elshupacabra 0 Report post Posted December 28, 2008 Because those teams draft players in the first round that don't amount to anything and the Red Wings draft players in the seventh round that become superstars.

Representing the Sharks (and the Cookie Squad ) I aggree with your post. Everyone has been hearing about the Wings so much and for so long, they're getting sick of it. I, personally, as a Sharks fan, do not hate the Wings. I admire all they have done. But whenever we play them, I certainly am not a Wings fan. Never have been. No offense to any of you, it's just that the Wings aren't my team.

ladypredsfan 0 Report post Posted December 28, 2008 I don't think anyone here in Nashville actually "hates" the Wings - it's just fun to taunt the fans who come here to the games. There were a couple of girls here Friday night that were really obnoxious - even after the Wings lost to the lowly Preds. We (or some fans - not me) call Chelios a sissy and say the other players **** (if you have been here you know what I mean) but it is all in fun - I really respect the Wings and I love watching Chelios play. I was disappointed when he wasn't in the lineup Friday night.
