FireCaptain 563 Report post Posted January 14, 2009 (edited) I can't remember who it is, but some poster on here has a "hit list" of Leafs he would like off the team and I think the 2 remaining ones are Kubina and Kaberle. Possible good news for that person. • Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Tomas Kaberle has long been a subject of trade rumors this season and last week he added fuel to the fire by saying he’d be willing to waive his no-trade clause if requested by management. Leafs GM Brian Burke has stated he won’t ask any of his players currently with no-movement clauses to waive them, but it’s believed if one of them - be it Kaberle or fellow Leafs blueliner Pavel Kubina - wants out he’d be willing to deal them. It might be in the players’ best interests to request a trade now when the two would have a say in their potential destinations. Should the Leafs miss the playoffs, there’s a clause in their contracts that provides Burke a two-month window to deal them to any NHL team without permission. The Leafs aren’t about to tank the season to try to land in draft lottery contention for the 2009 first overall pick, but a package centered around either Kaberle or Kubina could be used by Burke to try to land a high pick come this June’s entry draft. http://www.thehockeynews.com/articles/2233...ve-goodbye.html Edited January 14, 2009 by FireCaptain

I seems like Kaberle or Kubina (if traded) would go to a contending team. None of this potential suitors would have a "high draft pick" to offer.
Barrie 900 Report post Posted January 14, 2009 MacK! And yeah, it's in his sig, the "Muskoka Five". A hilarious reference if you live in the Toronto area Yea I think Billy Waters came up with the name. It got and still does, get a lot of air play on tv, radio, and in the papers. MacK_Attack 108 Report post Posted January 14, 2009 Antropov will be moved, too. I think one of Kaberle or Kubina will be moved before the deadline, the other at the draft or during the summer. Ponikarovsky, Moore & Stajan will be peddled too. Poni & Moore are almost definitely on the move.

I think he will wait until after the season to move Kaberle and/or Kubina. I think he will get more for them then. As another poster pointed out, the teams that they would want to go to would be contenders, and contenders don't have high draft picks. Look for Burke to secretly hope the Leafs miss the playoffs, and lose as many games as possible. I think this summer is when you will see Burke really tear apart the Leafs roster. He'd be an interesting option for the Wings at the deadline. I'm not so sure Burke would deal with the Wings, and I'm betting Moore is going to attract a decent amount of interest, but he'd be a good safety option for Detroit. Moore might be easier to re-sign - and cheaper - than our own scoring depth, and Moore might be a good replacement for losing a guy like Sammy.

But, with Kaberle coming out and saying that he'll take a trade, I think that will pave his way out of Toronto by the deadline. What do you think about Moore, Mack? Never tries to do too much, but never stops trying. Solid 4th liner.
sether 5 Report post Posted January 15, 2009 Moore has surprised me this year with his play in Toronto, I wouldn't have a problem if the Wings found a way to pick him up, unfourtunately with the Wings up against the cap I doubt it would work out though. According to Matt, the Wings can supposedly pick up 1.7M of non-prorated salary. Thats enough space to add Moore (900k) and bring up Helm full time. But the obvious easy way out for making space for a move is to trade Lebda. Meech is cheaper, and has proven to be just as good while being more versatile. MacK_Attack 108 Report post Posted January 15, 2009 The latest is that Burke is looking to help teams clear cap space by acquiring an expiring contract from those capped-out teams. The type of deal would be say, Dimitri Kalinin and the Rangers 1st round pick to Toronto for a marginal prospect like a Phil Oreskovic or Brent Aubin. (Strictly an example, not saying this will happen). The Leafs would then turn around and deal Kalinin to another team for a draft pick/prospect. Anyways, that's the type of deal the Leafs are likely to do before heading into the deadline.

That seems too good to be true ... wouldn't the Rangers prefer to deal Kalinin to whatever team the Leafs would deal him to for said pick/prospect and keep their 1st? The problem is they need to move the salary as soon as possible and a team legitimately desiring Kalinin would want to wait until March when his cap figure is much lower. Buying teams who are in the playoffs aren't going to make those kinds of deals for at least another month and capped out teams need to move salary now in order to have sufficient cap space on March 4th to add a player or two.
