C-TownWing 0 Report post Posted February 11, 2009 The hockey gods elected to take Robert Lang for the season as penance for this.

Datsyerberger 279 Report post Posted February 11, 2009 Yeah, but it's a traditional jersey so it gets a pass. I thought the candy cane socks at the Winter Classic were kind of cheesy but that's looking at them through a modern paradigm which is not appropriate when judging vintage specimens. For example, the Coliseum in Rome was designed using column designs from three different Greek architectural periods. The Romans found the design attractive because they valued the sort of inclusiveness it represented, tying together the three different time periods. The Greeks however would have thought it foolish because they did not have the same values. That said, yeah from our modern era of cool and aggressive jerseys, that Montreal one looks goofy, but it is a throwback and it's value is in recognizing the Habs heritage. Regardless of taste, said column differential doesn't give you eye strain and vertigo just by looking at it.
Holmstrom96 347 Report post Posted February 11, 2009 Those are just plain horrible. I don't know if the frenchies will wear them, but I know that no self respecting American in Detroit, Boston, or Chicago would ever wear anything like, even if it was an original six throwback. Those jerseys nearly induced a grand mal sezuire.

Z is next captain! 0 Report post Posted February 11, 2009 While I am a huge fane of vintage jerseys those are just terrible! (I wish the red wings would make the WInter Classic jerseys a 3rd jersey.)
VM1138 1,921 Report post Posted February 11, 2009 (edited) 1912-13. Why is one of the players holding a dog? EDIT" Does anyone remember who won the game that Montreal wore the vintage jersey? Because I'd be willing to bet they did, I'm sure Boston players were having freaking seizures seeing those whipping around the ice. Cern 0 Report post Posted February 11, 2009 (I wish the red wings would make the WInter Classic jerseys a 3rd jersey.) I'd be curious to see how those jerseys look with a predominantly red colour scheme. I'd love to see them as thirds but ideally it should be something in home colours. cusimano_brothers 1,655 Report post Posted February 12, 2009 Probably a team mascot of sorts. The obvious "Vegas material" answer would be to say that the dog was the "Rover", but Wikipedia says: "In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, ice hockey consisted of seven positions. Along with the goaltender, two defencemen and three forwards who remain today, a Rover was also part of the team. Unlike all the others, the rover did not have a set position, and roamed the ice at will, going where needed. As the skill level of players increased, the need to have a rover was decreased. When it was formed in 1910, the National Hockey Association decided to exclude the rover." Possibly the team mascot, or the dog was owned by one of the players. I can't find it online, but there was a famous Boston team photo, from the days when Don Cherry coached them, with the original "Blue" sitting on the ice in front of Cherry. Wings_Rule_1010 4 Report post Posted February 12, 2009 Wow. Those are really ugly. When I first saw them the first thing that popped into my mind was candy canes. Or a U.S. Flag. Which doesn't really fit, considering they're in Canada.
BobRouse03 31 Report post Posted February 12, 2009 I thought the Canadians were employing a strategy using those jerseys.......give Patrice Bergeron a seizure by making him look at those jerseys

Cern 0 Report post Posted February 12, 2009 I wound up sating my own curiosity on how a home-colour reversal of the WC jersey would look Kinda hard to get a real good perception of it but I actually think it looks better predominantly white. Also, I'm wondering what the story is on those two jerseys furthest to the left. I can see some kind of shoulder patch on them (presumably the Habs Centennial patch) but they're not being used as centennial vintage jerseys this season. Wings_Fan_In_Exile 3 Report post Posted February 12, 2009 Certainly a dark moment in Habs fashion history. Although I still maintain the Coyotes old alternate jersey was horrific. And I am one of 7 Phoenix Coyotes fans...I mean what the hell man, is that dog wearing half an old school goalie's mask? and why only half? The US southwest and ice hockey do not have a natural relationship, don't try to force it with oddly bad jersey art. But yeah, seriously that Habs sweater is a bad combo of Where's Waldo and ugly PJ's.
