There's no real standard for giveaways and takeaways, and they're kept by the home team I think. So what's a takeaway in one city might not be in another.

Its still on NHL.com. Go to stats, individual, and then on the right hand side theres a drop-down menu that says "summary". Choose the one that says "HITS-players" and it lists hits, takeaways, giveaways, blocked shots, missed shots, etc.

Ahhh, nice. And I thought i had checked every last nook of the stats area the other day.

They only person they probably keep track of is pavel datsyuk.

they've got it here. It's "TA".

Datsyuk has just 34 giveaways compares to 66 takeaways, pretty impressive.

ok I haven't watch a ton of Pens games so I could be wrong, but how the hell does Malkin have as many takeaways and hits as Datsyuk?

Because Malkin is an exceptional hockey player. Far better than he gets credit for, in my opinion.

Indeed. But then you look at his giveaways and see what his GA:TA ratio is, and realize that the Force is strong with him, but he is not a Datsyuk yet.

(Also, in before the "he gets more icetime")

no doubt but still that is pretty shocking, I have heard that his D is much improved.

Well, there is a lot more to playing D than just takeaways. For example Zetterberg generally has less takeaways than Datsyuk, but I still think Z is the better player defensively (not by very much, but still).

Malkin is a very dynamic player though.. he can be very physical, ferocious on the forecheck and of course he has a lot of other talents. Easily the superiour player between him and Crosby.

I still think he has a long way to go before he could be considered a good two-way forward though.. watching him play on the point during the Pens PP's is laughable sometimes.. so many giveaways that lead to breakaways or 2-on-1's.

He's got some tweaking to do with his game.. but the amount of potential he has to be a Datsyuk amazes me. Give him a couple more years and I think we're all going to be impressed.

Unfortunately the takeaway and giveaway stats are probably the most unreliable stats in the NHL - as has been noted, it is tallied by each home team, and can differ from arena to arena.

For instane, I don't think there has been a single game where Datsyuk, in my eyes, does not have at least two clean takeaways, and sometimes I see him do it 3 or 4 times. Yet, according to his stats, he is averaging barely more than one a game. Last year he was given credit for twice as many - and I certainly have not seen a noticeable dropoff in his takeaways between this year and last - certainly not a 40% drop. Malkin, meanwhile, has received credit for 40% more takeaways than last year.
