Optimism After the Ugliest Game of the Year

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

The goaltending situation is definitely scary right now.

Conklin looked like he might be the guy earlier, but tonight it looked like he couldn't stop a pillow from getting into the net.

Ozzie has looked like s*** all season, so we can't count on him.

Optimism isn't the same thing as dumb blind faith. To say that everything is fine would be ignoring all the problems that this team has had defensively and in net this season. Sure we've outscored teams and have a great record, but in the playoffs it'll be hard to score 4 and 5 goals every game. Something needs to be done, because it's not going to fix itself.

the Wings could have had two goalies in the game and still would've lost tonight they were THAT bad.

What on earth do you expect the goalies to do when, as you say, only one guy looked even a bit interested? It seems to me that we ought to be concerned more with all those guys who weren't concerned over the guys at the end of the line...

What did I expect them to do???

I expected them to stop more than 15 of 23 shots on goal. Whether or not the team in front of them sucked, the goaltending duo stopped 65% of the shots on goal. That's pathetic. Those kind of stats would lose you your job in a Friday night beer league.

It's clear we need another solid defensive D-man. Meech should NOT be playing in the playoffs while Kronner and Stu need to get their heads (and asses) in order.

agreed, but my question is...can one d-man make a big enough impact to bring about enough change, or are we going to need an additional trade as well (on defense)?

meech needs to go bye-bye.

Cliche fanboy remarks like that make it almost unnecessary for me to even bother illustrating your ignorance on the matter of goaltending and hockey in general.

So I'll just say, hey, you keep on trucking...

We don't need a guy who can perform at a high level to pick up all the slack. Our guys are capable of playing great. We just need a guy with a bit of hunger and experience to liven things up for everyone, especially the 5-6 guys competing for spots. Chelios may be able to be that guy more come playoff time if he can resist injury, but having another veteran there to up the competition and focus would certainly help should Chelios not be able to handle it.

Again, let's not forget, this is the same defense that was lights out all throughout the playoffs and they've got the benefit of another Selke-caliber forward in Hossa. They should be able to handle it. They just need a little bit of a shaking up.

Plus, a stay at home guy might ease things up for Lids who I think is more hampered by injury then he lets on.

'Cliche fanboy remarks'??? Kiss my ass.

As for my 'ignorance' on the matter of goaltending and hockey in general...where the hell do you get off sitting in front of your computer judging me and what I know about hockey? You can go f*** yourself and keep your ignorant, pointless remarks to yourself. My comments had nothing to do with you, so save it, *******. Who in the hell crowned you as the local authority on goaltending and hockey in general anyways?

There's always a hero out there who has to go and make things personal....

Actually the poster who you're quoting is exactly right. If all people looked at were stats there wouldn't be a need for a coaching staff. Sufficed to say, the game isn't run by the box score. Games like this one that trash up one's GAA and Save% mean s*** because the whole team played bad. It's a wash. You're simply overanalyzing stats to mean more than they do. Nothing more.

Not at all...

You can make your point in other ways than claiming I'm ignorant and a 'fanboy'.

That's what I would call personal. If you didn't like my comment on the goaltending performance or the words I used to describe it, I'm OK with you disagreeing with me, but there's ways to go about it. You chose the personal approach...that's what I took exception to.

I understand where you're coming from, and you make a very good point. But I don't necessarily disagree with him (original poster)...I just didn't appreciate his wording. As for the goaltending, yes, the stats from tonight's game should just be thrown out, if that were possible. I am a stats guy, admittedly, but there's no mistaking some of the stats taken from the boxscore tonight. For example, Derek Meech and his -5 was pretty disturbing. That might just open the door for Brett Lebda to move back into the defensive top 6 now that he's apparently healthy.

Back to your post...well stated, and true. It is a wash. Tonight's game was a rough one for all of the players. The only guy that held it together was Nick (and even Rafi for the most part). So, looking past the stats...yes, you really can't lay blame on a goalie (or goalies) when the 18 skaters in front of him just didn't have it together.

So, I stand corrected.

honestly, i was hoping for a game like this... though, not in such an evil manner.

either way, this oughta wake us up.

i think the boys figured they won the game that mattered, and just threw caution to the wind with the preds.

that is exactly what I was thinking when it was 5-0, we really needed this big time!! I think this game will be the kick in the cods we needed!! I'm just glad it didn't happen in the playoffs. Make no mistake, the Wings will circle the March 29th rematch with Nashville, this time at JLA!!

That's fair enough. I can respect that. In my defense, I've grown really tired of a lot of the drivel that's associated with the ever-running goalie debates around here and in my opinion, I think people demonstrate their lack of understanding of the big picture when they start harping on the goalies and making outlandish claims. Sometimes I point it out in a more refined manner. Sometimes I just get annoyed by it and write the people off. I did that in this case because I just didn't feel like getting into it because it's just such a tired subject.

The same stuff gets rehashed all the time around here and honestly, it's hard for me to value people's opinions when they start making these grand sweeping statements every day as if it's some landmark in original ideas. I don't understand how you can follow hockey for even a short period of time and not recognize that there are always off games that don't follow conventional rules per se and that the goalies can't be blamed for everything. It just blows my mind that people who have taken the time to find a message board for a hockey team don't understand those simple concepts.

Sometimes it gets old and I snap out of constructive mode a bit. I'm truly sorry it offended you.

Not every game is a winner... Winning is half the battle, losing is the other half. This was garbage hockey, plain in simple. They might as well had a group of high schoolers out there. But I have to agree with Babs. This time of year is a great time to get humiliated. It gets people going and reminds them what will be on in line in a month and a half. If the Wings are going to have some struggles, please let it be now so things can be straightened out and maybe the Wings can get working as a whole team and fire on all cylinders when the playoffs roll around. On a side note, thank goodness the Sharks lost to keep us in close with them.

I imagine when Lebda is ready to go he will get his spot back. I don't see the team going with Meech. You're right though, he hasn't impressed terribly.

Ass end of a kicking.

Learn and grow from it and move on.

That's all I'm asking from the Wings. Just tighten up defensively and understand that you can't walk into the play offs and turn it on... they need to play another 20 games of tight defensive hockey. Hopefully this embarrassment chafes their asses enough to get them angry.

Please Red Wings- play with a chip on your shoulder!

I know people are hard on the Wings here, and should be, but the team we saw on the ice a handful of hours ago wasn't the Red Wings we've seen for over 50 games. This team looked like something was amiss from the first second the game started all the way to the finish. They had no speed, no jump, and made mistakes a team that looks tired or exhausted makes. I dunno why, because they looked like they were in cruise mode most of Friday's game, but they just looked absolutely gassed Saturday. In every facet of the game. Line changes, dump-ins, clearing the front of the net, pursuing the puck carrier, cycling, fighting, everything they did just looked like they were tired and could not keep up.

Game 6 and game 7 is back to back

Not true. There are sometimes back-to-backs in the playoffs but it is unusual and games 6 and 7 are rarely back to back. In fact I don't remeber there ever was a game 6-7 back-to-back because there is always travel between them.

And as far as the Wings I don't remeber them ever playing back-to-back in the playoffs,

I didn't get to see the game. I was in the GDT getting my info from there and from the real time ticker.

May I ask something of those of you who did witness it? IIRC, there were 27 shots on goal for the Wings. The ticker only puts up names when it feels like it. I saw a lot of Sammy and Flip, but not much of anyone else. How did the offense look? Were there good chances that just didn't go in or was the offense as big of a part of the problem as the defense?

Thoughts?

As far as positive things- the GDT was a riot!

Edit: forgot a prepositional phrase.
